Funny things happen at NAMM. We were walking around and all of the sudden saw a crowd of people gathering so we checked it out and saw that it was Jojo Mayer setting up to perform with bass player Janek Gwizdala. So we got out the cameras and started shooting!
If you enjoy this please Like/Share the video, it really helps us out!
One of the world's greatest in my opinion
I agree man, I'd says it's more fact! Haha
Yeah, his triple-stroke roll is epic.
already?!, well then:P
Todd Lavigne Chris, steve, jojo,Thomas p and tony r... thats top 5 with dafnis and thomas L Ronald as honorable mentions.
He's definitely an amazing drummer but I would have to say Marco minnmeman does this style of drumming better
It isn't just his technical facility that amazes and inspires me, it's his musical vocabulary. The way he strings ideas together, it's like poetry to me. He has so many amazing ideas, and he strings them together in such musically inventive ways. I always feel inspired after watching Jojo Mayer! The fact that his cymbal setup sounds awesome is definitely a plus too! Love those AAX Omni cymbals.
Very well said, and so true. He's saying interesting things through his playing in every performance of his that I've seen.
Jojo and Janek are a kick ass bass and drum duo. Thanks for sharing this.
Jojo Mayer is a funk brother from another planet - he's in his zone! I love his jams! We need another Nerve LP now!
It's coming soon!
mike johnston grinning ear to ear back there. it's nice watching great drummers get blown away by other great drummers.
He's probably thinking he's glad to not have to follow that!!
he's always giving jojo this "oh no, you didn't" look :D
wow good job spotting him
JoJo also played "over the bar line" of 1 sometimes so each drum fill or break doesn't always drop back on 1. His technique is flawless!
I love these two together, watching every video I can find of them. This one has some of the best sound quality of the bunch...
Incredible drumming and sick pocket! Btw- the bass player was on time the whole way. All musicians need to remember: it is EVERYONE's job to keep the pulse. Even when there is silence the pulse is in everyone's head. There is no such thing as a 4/5 rhythm... the time signature is 4/4, somewhat of a reggae feel. The true sense of mastery lies in how Jojo comes up with so many creative and exciting ways to embellish a simple, repetitive bass line. Loop a simple bass line and see how long you can groove and embellish on it until it gets old...great way expand your creativity, and musicality.Peace, drummers....and make sure to practice!
A wee fact I learned playing in a jazz band was that it was the bass players job actually to keep time, not the drummers (as much, he/she still had a wee bit of work) but the drummers main job was to provide a back beat or on beat pulse
+Gregor Wlliamson But Jazz, especially the one that is close to the Bebop tradition is quite special in that regard. I'm not sure if it applies equally well to other genres.
+andramoie yeah haha. Was less relating it to this and more just giving out a little interesting information haha. Thank you for clarifying though!
Janek Gwizdala is a beast.
janek is an AWESOME player in many contexts!
This guy is a literal rhythmic robot!! But. With emotion!! Amazing!!
love how jojo gives the bassist hand ques. these guys made my YEAR!
This whole set was INCREDIBLE! Jojo and Janek are both animals!
That was such an incredible progression from the start of his soloing around 3:30 until the end. The entire time his solo is getting slightly more intense and quite obviously he does it amazingly well
I could honestly listen to this all day. Jojo is unreal
You're not wrong, they were slightly off at times. Still pretty cool though. Considering the audio (or lack of) setup they had I'm surprised Jojo could hear anything at all.
Two masters at work! Thank you for posting this!
In straight ahead the bass player plays almost strictly quarter notes so that makes sense that their job is to keep the time. The drummer is much more free to make rhythmic variations and dance in and around the pocket. There are times during the Miles Davis Quintet albums where Tony Williams (drummer) completely drops out abruptly and the rest of the band continues with the same deep pocket, then he makes rhythmic stabs and accents before building up to the full groove again. That's what you call a band, total trust in each other!
+Daniel Greenberg I wish my deep pockets had cash in 'em
Jojo doesn't need anyone keeping time. He can play in different time signatures/at different tempos with each limb and still keep track of everything.
All I can think is, "maybe he'll hit the china this time..."
4:13 there you go
Knowing to save the thing you want to hear most for Last. The guy knows how to make some music.
So much more enjoyable to watch than the Guitar Centre hopefuls.
This is my first time watching Jo Jo and now I'm interested
He's so amazing.....so much to learn yet!
Wow this is great, thanks for posting this!
absolutely insane control over the instrument ! a true master
freaking LOVED this! so crisp love that hi-hat
oh my God that was just magical, so fluid and beautiful.
I never ever tire from watching JoJo play
Jojo is a mad scientist
he is literally the Bob Ross of music. just look at his hair
jason starek going to see him at a small club in Atlanta Sept 20 ...can’t wait!!!
He could very well have PhDs in cultural anthropology and music history & theory and a MA in electrical engineering; the depth and the manner in which he articulates his ideas and methods is most impressive. The speculative hyperbole notwithstanding, he is an absolute beast on the kit with the rare ability to find the grey, improvisational spaces and translating his many, perhaps conflicting ideas into a cohesive and innovative product without compromising the piece or technique. This is the mark of a true innovator.
@@jeffreybrian2666 He can bang 'em good alright
@@jeffreybrian2666 so with all those words it took you a month to compose, what you're saying is, "he's badass"? Eh?
This is so good! You can see Mike Johnston in the crowd totally digging this hah!
Let’s give a shout out to bass man. He’s the only reason us drummers have the opportunity to express 🤙
Nice camera angles! There is so much awesome concentrated in this video! Lot's of great players!
I love that drum & bass feel from this.
That bass drum sound is all I want for rest of my life.
JOJO MAYER & MARK GUILIANA the best at their craft! Reinventing the kit! Awesome!
What a great sounding drum set+ drummer!
That was fecking AWESOME !!!
Jojo Mayer is one of my favorite drummers in the history of drumming :)
esse cara é fantástico, musicalidade na pura.
Awesome jungle feel throughout. Fill at 2:54 so awesome...one of the best playing today without question.
Ah, makes sense! Tetrastigm is my favorite tune by Nerve and this performance was still pretty sick. Thanks for clearing that up; I appreciate that! :]
Excellent spot, thanks for the heads up I clocked him in the frame and he's got his I am into the groove face on hehe
Jojo is my favourite drummer just love it
INSANITY!!!! I've playing drums and watching drum videos since 1984 and I've never, ever seen anything like that. "Well now you have."
two things that tell you Jojo mayer is one of the best drummers that has come around. One: I cant find a single negative comment about him on a UA-cam COMMENT SECTION...that takes skill.
two: just...for christ sakes its mayer
JOJO um dos meus batera favorito...
juntou a técnica apura a uma ótima sonoridade....
JO JO MAYER is the ONLY drummer ive ever seen who truly does NOT need a double pedal to make it sound like hes playing POWERFUL double bass GrOOves.
AWESOME as JO JO Always is
Take a look at Damien Schmitt (here on YT), I think, he's the second single-pedal-killer. But all in all I totally agree, Jojo is freaking awesome!
I agree Tim, but I must also disagree, there are a lot of drummers out there that incorporate single pedal goodness. For example, and he's in the crowd of this video, Mike Johnston. Look him up. I was also surprised to see JP Bouvet in here, I wish I was an American drummer, so many cool and inspiring dudes!
mattyboy141 YES Mike Jonson is also Amazing with Single foot
And John Blackwell. George Kollias had a single pedal work, but he plays double bass too.
Pridgen has pretty insane single pedal work too as well as a lot of the Gospel Chop guys, although generally I don't care for their style.
My God I've found a new favorite drummer 💯
monster grooving + mad creativity! this guy is beasting
That was a slick groove jojo, super tight and crisp.i'm just a banger (have had my rush moment ) but the feel this guy has is pretty awesome.
Este señor es uno de los mejor del mundo sin duda. Es un genio =D
Jojo mayer just has that unspoken swag about himself! love his playing
He is one of the top drummers!!
Love the sound of those toms. Especially his main rack tom
You guys should have Jojo come for a lesson!
yes!
Awesome drummer and bass player!! Great Groove!!
Man that was awesome!!!!!
Ridiculous. Jo Jo has mastered ' the groove particle'. I love Gwizdala loving it.
What a gorgeous snare!
Nice job.
Awesome stuff.
What a beast! Love me some Jojo
Quelle style....il déchire tout 👍👍👍
Looks like you guys had a great time at NAMM :)
Cet homme est magnifique...Dans tous mais absolument tous les aspects de sa personne...juste point.
The dynamic range is insane! 😳
Holy molly that is so smooth!.
I can second all these other people saying Jojo needs to come onto drumeo! He is a fantastic tutor among other things
My fave drummer for sure
Matched grip! 'Cause Jojo can blow our freakin' minds with traditional AND matched grip, like a walk in the park...
+Tom Collins I was thinking the same thing, about a minute in I went "Wait....he's using matched grip?!?!?!?!?!"
oh snap, didn't notice! wtf!
This drummer is completely off his rocker. F'n love it!!!
Lord almighty, I've got goose bumps all over
I just love this Guy!!
That stuff is Golden!
Awesome groove 👏
The drums are tuned amazing 👌
greatest drummer... of all time..legend
ベースがすごい awesome bass
So good!
so awesome!
god damn that was magnificent
Ohh man.... that's just amazing.
So sweet! :) Mike Johnston is in the crowd to Jojo's left! haha
Brilliant !
Please man COME IN GREECE ... we love you!!!!!!!!!!!
Metric modulation is an actual change in meter from fast to slow or slow to fastHowever, implied metric modulation is a trick or an illusion. We're PRETENDING to speed up or slow down by basing our groove and feel on a different subdivision than we were using originally. JoJo subdivides the 16th and 32nd notes into abnormal groupings then resolves the phrase and drops back on 1 every time. If you watch his hihat it stays on the actual meter along with the bass player. It's absolutely insane..
pure musical enjoyment!!!.....
just amazed wow fluid in motion
I will never understand the appeal of this music but I adore the drumming.
AMAZING x1000!
Always make me feel like shit! when I watch that man play! he is out this world!! Pure awesomeness! great video!
JoJo is the definition of groove!
Unbelievable good!!! Amazing!!! Talent!!!
Wow..just wow. Amazing
Love JoJo!!!
LOVE!!...
Jojo is a true professional!
He's just so incredibly original to me, so damn different. WOnderful
It took me a while too, but i really like his sound now. It is surely unpredictable, but tasty!
Whoever disliked this needs a reality check! AMazing performance
I used 5 sources total: A Sennheiser 835 mic dropped down in front of the bass drum, a Zoom H4N shoe mounted on the top of my T4i, then I blended a little bit of the T4i's camera audio and the 2 iPhone 5's camera audio as wide "ambience" mics. The key here were the bass drum mic and the H4N. I was then able to bring everything into Logic at Drumeo HQ and do a proper mix and master.
Anyone else see Mike Johnston in the crowd? It's like a Drummers' 'Where's Waldo' haha
+eaglegacb2910 haha yeah :D He's just standing there and smiling when Jojo does a nice fill or groove :'D
+eaglegacb2910 Mike is next to JP Bouvet :)
