There's a scene that shouldn't have got me in the 60s version, but damn somehow I just feel it. In the 90s version they're kinda almost over playing with the idea that Shadow didn't make it. The oldest kid made us know he was distraught because he thought only the cat and Chance made it, but there's something different about the oldest kid in the original. He just.... walks down the steps to the yard.. hands in pockets.. and just observes the family that got back the other two. @Austin Smith He's done a lot of those since he came back. The one that always bugged me the most was in his review of _The Matrix Reloaded_ where he said that it made no sense for Neo to fly to the others from the mountains because he could just use another door from the house to get to them quicker. In reality, the mansion he was in _was_ in the mountains and the garage they went into was the location that was in a far-away place. Now granted, I get it that wasn't explained very well in that scene that Persephone actually used one of those backdoor keys to take them from that restaurant in the city and into the Merovingian's mansion in the mountains, meaning that they were in a completely different building than before, but by that point they had made it pretty clear how the keys work: You use it to open a door to another part of the Matrix and when the door is closed again, it just goes back to being a normal door. Where Doug got the idea that some random baddie was able to just use that door to teleport Neo away to somewhere else in the Matrix by simply closing it, I have no idea.
Never seen the OG movie, but I love the remake! They had perfect casting for the VO with Michael J. Fox for Chance, the late Don Ameche as the wise Shadow and the ever sassy Sally Field as Sassy and don’t even get me started on the scene with Shadow near the end!

I grew up on Homeward Bound and just watched it again recently. The ending still makes me tear up. I can't believe how they managed to train the animals to ACT. Like, ACTORS. WITH THEIR EYES.
Homeward Bound was a childhood favorite and still one of my most favorite family movies ever. The main theme makes me tear up every time, especially when it plays at the end when Shadow appears.
Fun fact: at the end of Homeward Bound, there's a scene of the three animals running towards each other after being separated for a long time in the movie. In actuality, the animals were separated to film their respective parts and that reunion was real. They had become so accustomed to each other they were happy to reunite for that shot with no prompting from the handlers.
I can remember three times when I watched Homeward Bound just a few years ago that made me bawl my eyes out, the first being when Shadow just doesn't understand why Peter is leaving, but he can tell something is off, that it's not something Peter wants to do.
Sometimes I'll just be sitting doing nothing, and from nowhere I'll just have the theme from Homeward bound pop in my head. It's a very nice theme and extremely hard to forget, even thought it's been nearly 20 years since I last saw it.
"Homeward Bound" was my childhood. I did watch the original "Incredible Journey" later after some time, but the 1993 version always left a bigger impression on me.
Robert Redford was NOT the voice of Shadow in the remake. It was Don Ameche, a legendary Golden Age actor, and it was his last film. His acting MADE the movie. All the emotion came from him.
The main cast of Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field really sold the movie for me as a child in the early 90’s. They made me believe that everything really did happen and regardless of whether or not that it was based on a true story it gave me more than enough reasons to care about Shadow, Chance, and Sassy. The dialogue, action, and soundtrack are huge selling points for me to continually watch Homeward Bound every chance that i get. I always have tears in my eyes when i get to the end of the movie. #Chance #Sassy #Shadow #CatsRuleAndDogsDrool
Honestly if they had removed the songs and just had James Earl Jones narrate, that actually could have been a neat idea. I think the worst thing a Disney remake can do is be too similar to the original. There needs to be some difference in execution. Mulan remake was bad but I can at least respect it some for trying to be different than the original
There is a difference in putting animals in danger and Milo and Otis. In Milo and Otis they intentionally broke a cats foot to make it limp and had over 20 animals die.
I literally just watched this the other day and it has some LAUGH OUT LOUD funny moments. "Oh come on come on I'm not gonna hurt ya I just wanna chew on your neck." had me ROLLING. Also Sassy being picky about her food...yeah. Accurate. Hella accurate for cats lol. I also like the detail of when the pound guy put the muzzle on Shadow (how DARE you muzzle a GOLDEN RETRIEVER TF) he was actually muffled and couldn't speak that's good attention to detail.
Homeward Bound was always one of my favorites as a kid! It has a moment that all dog owners can relate to with the "KIBBLE!" scene and has a moment that all cat owners can relate to when Sassy gives an annoyed meow when Shadow and Chance try to get her to swim across the river.
Homeward Bound is an insanely great film. It's beautifully shot, well paced, and just has this feel of innocence and warmth that can only come from a movie starring two dogs and a cat. Of course, Sally Field, Don Ameche, and Michael J. Fox all play their roles brilliantly. Sassy and Chance's chemistry is perfect, and the writers really captured what might be said between a dog and a cat as playful rivals. It's also one of the only films in the world where I will cry at the end. The moment when Shadow crests the hill and Peter runs to him while the music swells...it's just...(sniff)...I CAN'T EVEN WRITE ABOUT IT WITHOUT....WAAAAAA! IT'S SO BEAUTIFUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLL! (Ahem, ahem). Before I lose all credibility in my short review, let me just say that it's a fantastic film. It's honestly an underrated hidden gem amid the absolute leviathan of the Disney canon. I highly recommend it!
My cousin and I would watch Homeward bound at least 3 times every time we got to see each other. That is one of my childhood memories that I hold vary dear to my heart.
I love that movie but the VHS I bought at a yard sale had an ad for James and the Giant Peach on it....I never even seen the movie but the stop motion disgusted me and I always had to skip the ads because of it!!! >_
I'm so glad you finally reviewed this! I wish you had maybe done both movies separately, because I feel like you could have talked about the really scary moments in the 1993 version (like Sassy in the River) and how emotional that scene is when they're mourning her and then to have the ending which is so brutally happy and emotional. I thought for sure you'd refer to that Don Bluth quote "Kids can handle anything as long as there's a happy ending". Also, Shadow is actually played by Don Ameche in one of his final roles.
So what if it was? Like Disney up until recent years has always retold stories in their movies. Your childhood shouldn't be ruined over something like this. I didn't know 101 Dalmatians was based on a book nor Bambi until recent years. When I found that out, I was surprised but then how Disney makes their movies based on fairytales, I honestly thought it made sense.
Thank you for my request i mentioned long ago Doug about reviewing Homeward Bound the Incredible Journey! 😁👍 had no idea honestly there was an older version of it but good to know too! 😮
I finally saw the incredible journey the other day, and it just did not strike me as much as homeward bound, did. Homeward bound makes me cry EVERY time, it's one of my favourite movies

He watched it about 100 times before I got sick of it. It’s definitely one I will watch again someday...maybe not any time soon, but it’s one of my nostalgic favorites
@@TheSupporter76 They could have used CGI for the dangerous parts, but they did it for the WHOLE MOVIE. Seriously, they couldn't just have Harrison Ford sit on a couch and talk to a real dog? It had to be CGI even then?
I can count on one hand the number of movies that have ever made me cry. Homeward Bound is one of them. I loved that movie as a kid and still love it as an adult.
I watched both of these as a kid, and LOVED (and still love) both of them for their differences! Homeward Bound was a fun adventure, where The Incredible Journey made the danger the animals were in feel MUCH more real.
Oh. OH. You didn’t talk about the sequel where the same three animals went to San Francisco where the antagonist animal of the film was voiced by Sinbad? Also count me as one who never never even heard of a 1960s film and didn’t know the 90’s one was a remake.

Seriously, I LOVE these movies.
Actually, Doug, the guy who voiced Shadow in the 1993 Incredible Journey is Don Ameche, not Robert Redford.
I'm curious where he got Robert Redford from.
He didn't even voice Shadow in the sequel.
I was gonna say. I didn't think that was Robert Redford voicing him.
I can remember three times when I watched Homeward Bound just a few years ago that made me bawl my eyes out, the first being when Shadow just doesn't understand why Peter is leaving, but he can tell something is off, that it's not something Peter wants to do.
Homeward Bound will always have a special place in my heart
I watched homeward bound remake so many times as a kid
Sometimes I'll just be sitting doing nothing, and from nowhere I'll just have the theme from Homeward bound pop in my head. It's a very nice theme and extremely hard to forget, even thought it's been nearly 20 years since I last saw it.
1:07 Robert Redford is NOT in Homeward Bound he does NOT VOICE one of the dogs. Shadow is voiced by Don Ameche
The theme song for Homeward Bound is one of the greatest for a family movie of all time.
Actually, that was Don Ameche as Shadow, not Robert Redford.
and that was his last role right? since Ameche died the same year this came out
@@iHeartsNostalgiaPit Actually his last role was in the film Corrina, Corrina
Wait why did he think that was Robert Redford? Do they sound that similar or is that another Mandela effect?
@@MILOPETIT unless Redford did the voice in the sequel which probably confused him but if he didn't who did?
@@iHeartsNostalgiaPit yeah that adds an extra layer of sadness to the end.
Homeward Bound was my childhood. Glad to see Doug FINALLY cover these.
Also glad to see many others in the comments feeling the same way.
I still tear up at the end of the Homeward Bound, can't help it
See Lion King 2019, this is how you do talking animals and give them personality
These movies are masterpieces compared to that abominable abomination.
Yes! Real animals who do emote and it’s thanks to the performances of the actors that give extra gravitas
But it's still better than Cinderella & Aladdin which were awful
Saying Lion King 2019 was better than Aladdin 2019 and Cinderella 2015 isn't an accomplishment. It was still s#*&.
Now do HOMEWARD BOUND 2: LOST IN SAN FRANCISCO!
No child forgets the final scenes in Homeward Bound.
I'm not afraid to admit that the ending of Homeward Bound still makes me cry as an adult
Not because its sad but because its a wonderful happy ending
Homeward Bound is one of my all time favorite movies. I love it so much.
Putting animals in real danger. Reminds me of Milo and Otis
There is a difference in putting animals in danger and Milo and Otis. In Milo and Otis they intentionally broke a cats foot to make it limp and had over 20 animals die.
@@bobothn "looks at the copy on my shelf "
shadow falling into the mud puddle made me cry so much.
Homeward Bound and it's sequel were my entire childhood on vhs. I will never not love these movies.
That's not Robert Redford who voices Shadow, it's Don Ameche.
Homeward Bound was always one of my favorites as a kid! It has a moment that all dog owners can relate to with the "KIBBLE!" scene and has a moment that all cat owners can relate to when Sassy gives an annoyed meow when Shadow and Chance try to get her to swim across the river.
I didn't know Homeward Bound was a remake! The more you know!
The best remakes are always the ones you didn't know were remakes
Homeward Bound still makes me cry.
These movies make me think of one thing:
Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!
A disney Live action remake that didn't suck, disney needs to take notes
It's a live action remake of a live action film, though. Does that count?
@@ernovincze2900
Nope.
My cousin and I would watch Homeward bound at least 3 times every time we got to see each other. That is one of my childhood memories that I hold vary dear to my heart.
What your thoughts on Homeward Bound 2 Lost in San Francisco
Love that one!
I love that movie but the VHS I bought at a yard sale had an ad for James and the Giant Peach on it....I never even seen the movie but the stop motion disgusted me and I always had to skip the ads because of it!!! >_
@@teddybearkiller5271 well it's on Disney Plus in HD if you have it :) never looked better!
@@Soundtracks92 We don't have have Disneyplus only Netflix. :(
@marius kristensen The U.S, why?
I love the ending where shadow shows up
Thanks for a great year NC! You’ve made my 2020 so much better!
HOLD IT! you're telling me Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey....was a REMAKE! I feel like someone just took a giant hammer to my 90s childhood.
Even the "original" film was based on a book, sooooo...
Homeward Bound was my favorite childhood film. I'd rewind the ending with Shadow over and over and cry my eyes out.
Who would like to see a Incredible Journey remake starring Lloyd, Chaplin, and Buster?
Thank you for my request i mentioned long ago Doug about reviewing Homeward Bound the Incredible Journey! 😁👍 had no idea honestly there was an older version of it but good to know too! 😮
Don Amenche did the voice of Shadow.
I finally saw the incredible journey the other day, and it just did not strike me as much as homeward bound, did. Homeward bound makes me cry EVERY time, it's one of my favourite movies
Damnit Doug, do some research once on a while. Don Ameche plays Shadow, not Redford.
All these shots form the movie look so warm and chill. the quality of the old film just add to this feeling.
This sounds like a good movie, please don't suck. I haven't watched the review yet so please
I never saw the incredible journey but I did see Homeward Bound which I thought was a good film.
All 3 are great IMO!
@@DraconicDuelist Yea even Lost In San Fran was funny as hell
I used to watch Homeward Bound every day growing up. That and Free Willy were my two favorite movies.
*being chased by a cougar*
Chance: “This isn’t any ordinary house cat. This is like Arnold Schwarzekitty!”
One of the best lines ever
My 3 year old son watched “The Witches” over and over again and I was worried it might be a little scary for him so I made him watch Homeward Bound. He ended up loving it!! He watched it about 100 times before I got sick of it. It’s definitely one I will watch again someday...maybe not any time soon, but it’s one of my nostalgic favorites
Shadow was voiced by Don Ameche. Not Robert Redford.
I've been waiting for the Homeward Bound Disneycember for a looooong time.
One of my childhood favorites.
I loved this movie as a kid, along with the first two Beethoven movies.
No matter how many times I watch them I cry like a baby every time. Best movies every!!!
These are what this year's The Call of The Wild should have been, unlike that movie these have real dogs!
There a lot of animal abuse in the book, it would have probably made people more uncomfortable.
@@TheSupporter76 They could have used CGI for the dangerous parts, but they did it for the WHOLE MOVIE. Seriously, they couldn't just have Harrison Ford sit on a couch and talk to a real dog? It had to be CGI even then?
@@jonathanwright8025 they probably should and went further and did the entire thing animated.
The call of the wild was good but the bad effects made it hard to take seriously
I can count on one hand the number of movies that have ever made me cry. Homeward Bound is one of them. I loved that movie as a kid and still love it as an adult.
Best person to rant about the complete obvious thing everyone wishes they’re friends and family would 👍
I watched both of these as a kid, and LOVED (and still love) both of them for their differences! Homeward Bound was a fun adventure, where The Incredible Journey made the danger the animals were in feel MUCH more real.
Nostalgia critic: This is Homeward B-
Me: Aaaaaaaagggghhh!!! 😭 Shadddoooow!!! 😰
This comment just made me burst out laughing 😂
But, yeah... Same here...
Homeward Bound still makes me cry. That musical score is tattooed onto my mind.
“It’s been 84 years” since I hoped he would talk about this movie
I loved these films growing up in the 90’s. Still love these films today. Thanks Doug.

Yes I always wanted one of these🤣🤣🤣
Claimed! Although with a set time slot, it’s admittedly hard to miss if you have the time.

Yoink!
YES! I loved Homeward bound as a kid! I still cry when ever I hear Michael J. Fox cry "SHADOW!"
Oh. OH. You didn’t talk about the sequel where the same three animals went to San Francisco where the antagonist animal of the film was voiced by Sinbad?
Also count me as one who never never even heard of a 1960s film and didn’t know the 90’s one was a remake.
Sinbad’s dog wasn’t an antagonist, he was mostly pretty friendly.
Thanks for the nostalgia train. Homeward Bound (the one with the talking animals) was my jam when I was a children.
So many "you got the voice actor wrong" messages. New episode of Nostalgia Critic F ups when? There must be enough material after all this time.
Me thinks, obvious flubs are proving a successful ploy for increasing engagement.
I stopped counting after twenty, and that's not counting replies to those comments stating "I was just about to post that." Personally, I'm midway through a reasonable lifespan and don't remember ever seeing or hearing the name "Don Ameche" but I guess each of us have our memorable actors.
Man, this takes me back to a simpler time.
