I've always loved gettin' out, especially well before sunup, with a thermos, some sammiches, or mebbe a small pan, stove and some breakfast, pick up Jim, or Bill, and head out fer "coyote huntin'", though mostly it was just drivin' slow an' quiet, talkin', solvin' all the world's problems, mebbe even gettin' a shot or two in at a 'yote or bobcat, but that wasn't always the point. Sometimes, I'd surprise myself, and I'd happen onto a ridge just as the sun was breakin' over, an the 'Ol Man would show me what he'd done with the landscape overnight. Mebbe why I enjoy my place here so much. I look to the east, an I see a yella at the bottom, with a layer of pink, while the early mornin' sky is still that cobalt blue, then the details of the buttes on the desert start to come up. I turn round as the first blindin' rays overwhelm, look to the nrth an west toward the Big Lost Range, the Pioneers, sometimes the Sawtooths, or dependin', even the Tetons.
I love the quiet and solitude of the fog in timber, and on the rollin sagebrush hills. I have been knowed to stop in awe, watchin clouds roll over and down mountains like waterfalls. Man thinks he's artistic! I spose so, but he dont hold a candle to the 'Ol Man!

AMEN!! You nailed it! There's much more to hunting or trapping than hunting or trapping! Much, much more! We could do it without hunting or trapping, but we probably wouldn't. It's the excuse to go that hunting or trapping gives us we like so much.

I feel ya brother. I'm over the divide from you a ways and I've been checking empty bobcat traps for coming up on 5 weeks now with no sign in sight. Probably let em soak another 10 days or so and by then the quota will likely be filled. Kinda discouraging when there's just zero activity. But that's hunting and trapping for ya. Some years it's exciting has heck, some years it's just exercise and outdoor air. Here's to looking forward to next season.

Good Morning Muskrat, Well that's not really what you wanted to do, but like you said, there is no sign. Hopefully you can find a better place to stay in the game. I always liked those snowy days, but not on the hiway. 😢 Talking about chains, 😢 I've got a wealth of experience with them , my entire life seems like, that's something that we always had ,and had to use just to get around. To start with, make sure you get all the kinks out. And if you had hangers-on the truck, it would be easier to keep the kinks out. Pickup or 3 railers the principal is the same ,it's sure better than sliding down the hill backwards. In Oregon we had to use a lot of chains to get the job done, including 3 railers and singles. 😅 But it's very satisfying to actually get where I had to go. Hauling Hay ranch to ranch, over two different mountain passes, ice covered. I always enjoyed repairing chains, sounds kinda crazy Ha.😅 Have a Great Day, and Happy Trapping. 😊 I sent you the article about the large wolf, did you get it?

Good morning! It's never fun, but chains sure do the job. The ones with the carbide ice cleats are the best I think. Yeah, those 3 rail/dual tire chains are a real pain!!! I've only had to mess with them a few times, but that was enough!

Sorry about the empty traps, as you said you can't catch what is not there. Talking about the rabbit with the pierced ear. I did that with a squirrel. I was shooting a 22 and shot at one and it went berserk, running around and around the tree to the top took off and left. I came back by that area a few hours later saw one, made a head shot. when I picked it up it, it had a perfect half moon hole in its ear. Truth is stranger than fiction. Be blessed my friend. PB

    • @MuskratOutdoors
      @MuskratOutdoors  22 дні тому +2

Welcome!!! There is a group her called The Foundation 4 Wildlife Management or F4WM, that will reimburse you for expenses for wolf trapping or hunting. It's not a bounty, but it's similar. You have to have recites for expenses in order to get your refund. In my area, it's $2,000 per wolf. Across the road in another spot, it's $500 per wolf. The reason why is problems with wolves eating cattle and the number of deer and elk. Both Idaho Fish & Game, and cattlemen's groups help to fund them. Wolf hunting and trapping is not cheap, and this group helps successful hunters and trappers to get out and manage wolf numbers. When this first started, I thought it was an anti-wolf group, and was against it, but it is just promoting management. Without them, fewer people would be able to do this and by now our deer and elk would probably be gone. The wolves I catch, I have had tanned and keep myself. I could sell them, but they are too hard to come by. With this program, I can get money back that I've already spent, and keep the wolf too.

@MuskratOutdoors No Muskrat I think you stayed in the saddle longer than I wouldhave on that line but it always is a let down when ya pull a line. But I think you had a lot of human activity in that area with the loggers and others and woofs seem like they move on with much human presence .hell with the snow you had they could top out and go about anywhere they wanted. Old J Whitman says they might travel 50 miles in thier loops and probably will hang in drainage with less people longer. But there's always next year. And them springs do work great as chain tighteners I use them on my 4 wheelers. And another tip you might want to do on your chains is tie some orange ribbon on them for when you chew into camp and ones missing it makes them easier to spot when you backtrack looking for them.

  • @johnlindsay8630

I think the problem is is there’s no wolves in that area first of all second of all I think you’re gonna have to find a dead cow elk deer and bathe it and then do the thing with the traps. Just not enough enough for the for them to come there if they’re there, they’re there if they’re not I have the same problem I go put traps out nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing then I pull on so yeah you gotta find a lot of sign first or like I saidget a dead cow or whatever put it somewhere tie it and wait for sign to come. Good luck, man I hope you get something beautiful country or go after mountain lion😅😊

Imo, well done. After some weeks of no tracks or results, cold snap coming in and fuel costs, pulling traps seems wise. Loss of income is never easy. Those traps, had they been successful, represented good money. On another note, every time you film through your windshield and I see that Crack, I think it's a hair on my phone and I try to blow it off lol. And every time, I chuckle to myself. Tire chains are never easy. They're a pita. I've tried several methods of installation and it's never simple. If your method gets tight chains then kudos to you. And yes, I bet your nose was sore for a while. Little something for your friends to poke fun about keeping your nose out of others business etc😅. Sure wish you'd have trapped a couple wolves. Wonder how much the big fires had to do with their travel patterns.

I archery hunted aound opal Lake had to been around 10 years ago when I would bugle the whole mountain side would lite up with coyotes yelping and barking, I was camo'd out and would watch those coyotes come looking for me and they stand out about 20 yards from me shifting their head back and forth and I'll just be as still as could be.

Neat! I like Opal Lake. We fished it years ago. Fishing was great, but they were all "Endangered Bull Trout". There was a white mountain goat there too. Neat little lake.

Are you still getting Muskrats? Nevermind. I commented before the very end.
PS- Run your route one more time on the next good day and you will have tracks all over dancing on your empty beds. Thats what always happened to me...lol

Not in awhile. The traps are still there, but I caught about 17 and it stopped. That's about normal for that spot.

That homemade bungie snappin' could've been a great vid title...."the day I got my nose pierced". The thumbnail could've been a pic of you, but use a filter and make your hair purple. Sucks about the trapping, but logic must always prevail.

Ha! Maybe so! I brother sent me a picture the other day of a hippy fella that sure looks like me! I kind of wonder if they didn't steal my face! I'll have to show it before too long.

Was hoping for tight chains, not the ones on your tires, the other ones.

I was hoping that you would have trapped some there. Maybe your luck will change in a different place.

I had high hopes too. Right at the start there was a lot of tracks, but nothing since. I think other folks beat me to them.

The easiest way to put tire chains on is having someone else do it 😅

There might be a reason some skidders have the chains on year around!!!???

Maybe!!!! Traction, but maybe just not wanting to struggle putting them on again too!
