The fight was televised live in prime time by ABC, which paid $3.5 million for the fight.
Holmes earned $2.5 million and Shavers received $300,000.
Shavers earned his title shot by stopping former WBC heavyweight champion Ken Norton in one round on March 23, 1979.
After dominating the first six rounds, Holmes was knocked down in the seventh round by a devastating overhand right. He hit the canvas with a thud, flat on his back. But he got up and survived the round.
Holmes regained control after the seventh round, and in the eleventh round, with a battered and exhausted Shavers still on his feet, referee Davey Pearl stopped the fight. Shavers later said he'd been thumbed in the eye by Holmes. - Спорт

Larry Holmes had the best jab in the heavyweight division of all time. He should be rated in the top 5 heavyweights of all time. He even scored a K O with that jab.
Shavers once said Holmes jab was bone jarring. He said Ali was the better boxer but Ali’s jab was a flicking jab and not bone jarring like Larry’s.
Larry is one of the all time greats.
What took Holmes from an average fighter to a great one was that jab
You are so right. I think that effort with perfecting the jab showed that Larry was a serious technician, and disciplined student of the art of boxing. He was very serious and focused, no clowning, showed up to the ring with a briefcase. That's what some didn't like about him.

That Holmes Mercer fight is awesome. I go back to watch it often.
Larry gave Evander Straight Hell in that fight. Evander Holyfield was getting his ssA kicked on the inside. Larry was rope a doping Evander until his corner told him not to go back inside with Larry. Larry was dropping some BOMBS on Holyfield. He elbowed Holyfield in the face and split his eye wide open. That fight is a great one.

Holmes is way underrated, unfortunately for him he was sandwiched in between Ali and Tyson and people kinda ignore him.
How is he underrated? All he did was beat a bunch of washed up 70's fighters. One thing I'll say about Holmes though, he must have had a cast iron chin to withstand some of those bombs that Shavers landed

This fight is why he fought tin cans after. He could have easily danced for 7-8 rounds,closed Shavers eyes and took him out. He decided to make a statement and plant feet and brawl. Got knocked down twice and still took the man out.

Larry Holmes used that jab most effectively it's what saved him from being destroyed in the ring. It was obvious Shavers wanted a brawl which Holmes was smart enough to avoid with his super effective jab

It amazing that Ernie shavers was never heavyweight champion of the world, and the reason is most of the heavyweight champions great fighters of the 70s duct him Muhammad Ali duct him for years Joe Fraser duct him George Foreman duct him. Larry home said he was afraid to fight him because of his power George Foreman Joe Fraser Ken Norton were Taylor made for Ernie shavers they came straight ahead and anything shavers hit. He took out that’s why they ducked him. Otherwise he been the champ for quite a few years.

I keep looking for the part where Tyson was in the ring. Everyone on here seems to want to talk about him but he wasn't much of a factor in 79' I guess. I thought it was strange that Shavers showed no emotion when the fight was stopped other than maybe relief. 12:05 As much as he put into that fight, I was surprised to see that.

Tyson never fought any top caliber fighters. Most of the fighters he beat were bums.
That's a joke. Tyson in his prime between 85 and 90, he was invincible. Holyfield and Lewis also would've been beaten. Nobody had tge ferocity and viciousness of tyson in the ring. He was the ultimate exucutioner.

bullshit, Tyson in his prime was only a KO king of 2nd rate or over the hill fighters. he never faced any elite fighters who were in their prime while he was in his prime. Holyfield, Lewis, and Bowe would have handed Tyson his ass, all prime or not. Holmes in his prime would have worn a prime Tyson down in the later rounds in every matchup they would have had (don't bring up the Holmes/Tyson fight where Holmes was 17 years older) Prime Holmes vs prime Tyson would always be a Tyson losing by points....every fight.
