Take a moment to reflect on how history tends to view and remember instances when authorities like the police or military used excessive force and violently cracked down on peaceful protests by college students. More often than not, such heavy-handed responses against young people advocating for change are looked back upon as shameful overreactions by those in power.
From the Kent State shootings in 1970, where the Ohio National Guard opened fire on unarmed student protesters, killing four and injuring nine others, to the Bloody Sunday massacre in 1965, where state troopers brutally attacked civil rights marchers in Selma, Alabama - these types of incidents become emblems of oppression that tarnish the reputations of the perpetrators.
Even beyond overt violence, history also does not look kindly on authorities who responded to student activism with unduly harsh tactics like mass arrests, intimidation, or suppression of free speech rights on college campuses. The images of young people being treated as criminals for simply exercising their rights leaves a stain.
As you find yourself potentially on the front lines of dissent and calls for progress, it's worth pausing to consider what side of history's judgment you want your actions to fall on in the years and decades to come. Will you be remembered as part of the resistance against injustice and positive change? Or will you be seen as an obstacle to reforms, having actively worked to shutdown and restrict the ambitions of the next generation?
By taking a long view of how these situations are chronicled over time, you can gain valuable perspective. The movements and protesters advocating for civil rights, democracy, and social progress tend to be vindicated by history as courageous voices for justice. While the oppressive forces insistent on maintaining an unjust status quo are regarded as backsliding relics impeding moral progress.
So as the tides of activism rise again, give careful consideration to which side you want your name etched into the pages of history books and collective memory. Will you have stood with the youth calling for a better future? Or will you be an example future generations sadly look back on with criticism and rebuke? The choice is yours, but look to the past to weigh the consequences.
