If you tell an Ashkenazi Israeli that they're European, they tend to get angry. If you tell a geographer Israel is in Europe, they'll just tell you you're wrong. So what are they doing in the Eurovision song contest in the first place? What are they doing in UEFA?
As far as UEFA is concerned. My understanding is that Israel come under that umbrella because it would be too complicated from a security point of view for them to play within the same federation as their neighbours. Seems like a sensible reason if true, but certainly does not explain why they are included in Eurovision. Then again, Australia have had a run out in the contest in the past so it just looks like anything goes.
If I buy two rolls then they are mine.
Well, because Israel is a European settler colonialist State, so it's appropriate. Eurovision is indeed a disgusting parade of EU-NATO propaganda...
Europe is considered a continent by most people, but it’s neither a separate landmass, nor a separate geological unit. The only reason we say it’s a continent is because the Ancient Greeks divided the world around Greece as such.
And while yes, Africa is connected to Asia (ignoring Suez Canal), and the Americas are connected (ignoring Panama canal), their link is very narrow. Europe is connected to Asia through the entire North-South length of Russia.
So I’m convinced that Europe is not a continent, but a peninsula in Asia/Eurasia.
Some might argue that Europe is a continent because it’s culturally/geopolitically distinct. But I’d say that applies to many regions like the Indian subcontinent or the Middle East.
Edit: my point is that there is no non-arbitrary definition of continent that would apply to Europe. It’s not a separate landmass, or has its own tectonic plate, or the only culturally distinct region in its landmass.

As a Eurovision fan with contacts attending all three live shows (2 semifinals and the final) apparently there is some audio anti booing technology that operates in real time. The live audience (and their recordings) will detect the booing but the viewers at home won’t
They have that for MANY YEARS and have been using it for many years
@@Redlingstein Really? What's your source?
It's not even a technology , the artists mic only captures super close sounds (just some inches ) to avoid feedback from the speaker ,the audience mics are separate you can just turn them super low .
TV viewers globally can boycott the event and leave it to those attending live to protest. Israel should have been banned anyway, and Australia isn't in Europe either.

That Israel is even in the Eurovision contest says it all.
It says that Israel has cultural ties to Europe, like "Palestine" has cultural ties to Arabia 1000 miles away. Less than half of Israelis have European ancestry, most are from the Middle Eastern countries, descended from the 800,000 ethnically cleansed in 1948.
Any country in the EBA aka the European Broadcasting Area can participate. They also had Tunisia participate and Georgia and Azerbaijan participate. Australia participates because they just love it so much.

I hate these double standards when Russia is banned from almost everything but Israel isn’t. Israel ruined every rules and had done such horrible things to Palestinians civilians but still can live like nothing happened.
womp womp Israel is taking what was always theirs after they have been attacked by those terrorists, Russia attacked, banned, Israel is bashing the attackers, not banned
It’s good that protestors are active on international events so then isrealis watching back at home realise what their country is doing will have an effect on their international standing and what the rest of the world community feels
Not boycotting by the crowd and booing does get heard, that is the way protest works.
Exactly, boycotting sounds great until you're ignored and cant get the message out, agitation gets better results.
A performer getting on stage and pulling out a hidden Palestinian flag, or refusing to participate after getting on stage and using the platform to spread the message would go much further than boycotting the platform alone.

The fact that Israel can contend is such a cruel comedic and sad level of irony
Sure, Israel *is* a European (and American) settler colonialist project, but Israel itself isn't in Europe. So it's interesting they're invited to compete in this.
Because Israel have a lot of funding in EBU , And England is one of the big five that put in a lot of money in EBU and the Eurovision. Which also include France and Germany.
They are Europeans living in a foreign country.
@@lylm4147 that’s true, however they should have presented a EUROPEAN country of origin. It’s called Eurovision not worldvision.
All those middle eastern countries can compete as well they just need to equally broadcast all entries
Israel is part of EBU, but so are armenia, australia, morocco, and even lebanon which was almost in Eurovision 2005. None of them are in europe but that doesnt matter because its EBU not europe
Eurovision was absent terrible. We live in No Music Time. This awful Antimusic event is doomed. And where was the only Free Country in Europe now, RUSSIA
What is Israel doing in eurovision in first place
The same thing as Australia, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia.... it is called competing
I$rael isn't even part of Europe... what were they doing there?
What is Australia doing there?
Neither is turkey
@@PaulHolland-zo6lwActually the eastern part of Turkey is in Europe.
@@semsemeini7905 implying that because australia is there that justifies it(it doesnt)

Not everybody is willing or able to sacrifice their career to openly support Palestinians in this struggle. Its easy to be critical of that but if everybody says or does something, collectively it makes a difference..
Artists used to be more than just performers.. art without heartfelt authenticity is just empty performance. This is not a networking event or a job fair where some family dad is being asked to jump on a chair and pull out a palestinian flag. This is a broadcast in front of millions while there is a g-word happening

Hahahahhahahahahahahha
The contest is called Eurovision. There are other countries outside of Europe that compete. A 2 minute search and it shows right up with a very long list of countries. 😏
I agree with the speaker boycott all of these institutions

Boycotting Eurovision won't make any difference, they can always fill those seats with other people. Going there and booing Israel off absolutely sends a message.
At least the seat will not be filled up with my presence. And as someone said , its easy for SVT sadly to do a commercial or something to try to hide the booing. And you give money to EBU. That is why I never have visit Gaza even if I wanted to because did not want to give money to Israel which you have to do.
AND THE FACT THAT PEOPLE DON'T WATCH IT ON TELEVISION DOESN'T MEAN ECONOMIC LOSSES? I IMAGINE YES.
It does. Isrl places high stock in favourable p.r. event such as these.
This was bound to happen, it was a shame not more artists boycotted it B.D.S
None. They know they have many enemies since 2,000 years after being expelled to Europe from Judea by the Romans.
Message that Jihad took over Europe, thats the message.
To clarify: Israel is in the competition because Eurovision is organised by the 'European Broadcasting Union' - EBU. So every member state can participate, not just European countries.
Now why Russia is not participating, I can't answer. The contest is supposed to be non-political.
Russia isn't there because other broadcasters said they will drop out if they wouldn't b banned. Should they do the same with Israel? Yeah.
But besides rascism, Russia is much closer to us, and the danger of them much more real (heck, Baltic States and Eastern Europe were attacked by Russia before) so it's no wonder they were more adamant on boycotting Russia.
Still, Israel should be treated the same way
@@ololo518 What racism are you talking about? Russians are Europeans just like everybody else.
No I agree with the booing and hissing
Eurovision should never include Israelis to participate in the contest. If so , why not India is not included ? Both are Asian countries.
countries that are part of EBU can participate, for example australia is now and morocco did before.. so it doesn't even matter if they're in europe or not

@@axelbruv Except you won't ever catch Israel flattening any country in Europe ever, actually throughout the history you won't find even a jew committing massacres or terrorist acts, while Islam has done many terror acts in Europe and a big one in USA, so there's that.

GAZA was successfully taken from the Ottoman Sultan by the Australians in 1917 after he was not nice to the Australians in 1915 ( the Aussies were only trying to help the Russians get a few bombs etc. to kill Germans but the Sultan said no!) so technically it is Australian, but the British stole it from them (Typical British). It was given to the Egyptians in 1950 and strangely they dont want the problem either. Now that its a has been turned into a carpark and not a lizard theme park with sharks and crocodiles the Aussies does not want it anymore either. It seems by the latest surveys in Gaza that most people there want to go to America and Europe so it seems as if the locals dont care much for the joint either. As for this singing contest , it all seems about Gaza and not music at all so in the world of billions of people only the people that watch this contest it seems cares at all about The strip cause nobody else gives a FK!
Russia is banned Israel isn't, a discrepancy surely.
Was Ukraine banned?
No it is not. Russia invaded Ukraine and Hamas(Gaza) invaded Israel. It's the Invaders that get banned.
There is and was sanctions on russia this hasn't happened with Israel. Personally I think they should have been banned but they weren't so people booing them is good shows the world what Europeans think also what would an individual artist pulling out have achieved, nothing we should be fighting for our governments to sanction Israel and Ireland needs to hurry up and recognise Palestine officially thats is more of a statement imo.
Russia started the war with Ukraine. Israel forced to fight a war that Hamas started. See the difference?
Yes it is. But it doesn't mean u have to take on ur anger on Eden
I have always wondered why Israel has to be in Eurovision. Israel is located in the Middle East, not in Europe.
Bc Asia doesn’t accept them and Israel is a western colony.
I am sure you know why…
@@BocaoZ
I do know why 😉
It's not about the location of the country. It's about being a member or associated member of the EBU. (European Broadcasting Union)
Israel is a European colony. Hence they can't exclude it. Although now it's an American state.
