After watching Scotty everyday for the last 3 years I’ve come to realize that car manufactures don’t want their cars to be fixed. They intentionally make it difficult for problems to be diagnosed and repaired so you have to decide to spend a fortune to fix it or spend a fortune and buy a new one.

Thanks for covering the Ford Direct Injected engine. I am a fleet mechanic for a public utility that primarily drives larger three axle trucks. But part of our fleet does include Ford pickups. During one of the last vehicle acquisitions the company purchased a bunch of the 3.5 gtdi powered pickups. This didnt make much sense since the pickups spend most of their time making frequent stops and starts while checking meters and poles. You see, the vehicle acquisition group never talks to the mechanics before buying vehicles. If they had, we could have told them the EcoBoost was a terrible investment for the very reasons you mentioned. Its a complex design and not very dependable especially for a truck that rarely spends any time on the open road. Turbochargers arent necessary for repeated starting and stopping in neighborhoods. Not to mention we are in the Mojave desert where temperatures of 100+ are normal throughout the summer. Not one of these pickups have held up very well. And when something goes wrong its costly. Prior to that the pickups were equipped with the 5.4 Triton. Again, why put such a big engine in a pickup that merely starts and stops hroughout the day. I wasnt terribly impressed with the 5.4 but at least it held up better than the EcoBoost
scotty, i didn't like you at first cause you were always screaming in your intro... then i gave your video's a shot and i'll say you're one of the most knowledgeable guys out there with tons of years of experience... i love talking to guys like yourself in my every day life... you're a wealth of knowledge and always willing to share....thank you sir for sharing what you know..
Well not really.....On a Challenger with factory functional air scoops on the hood, rain water or just a car wash lets water drip on about 2-3 coils. Don't ask me how I know this. So, sorry Scotty, they serve at one function. Do I like engine covers? Hell no but I have no choice this time.
Its called an acoustic cover because the direct injection engine created so much tappity tappity noise with the High pressure pump being driven by the exhaust camshaft right beside the brake booster created customer concerns of camshaft lifter noise. Old school car people didnt believe it and thought the engine was going to grenade.
Brian Green So...The solution is to befoul the air we breathe for reduced emissions standards? Keep on burning fossil fuels wastefully in poor mileage vehicles?
@@briangreen430 - It's true. I have read through an engineering report on a GDI engine before the car even came out, and it was pointing out how the extreme emission control was literally costs like 30% of the performance. They also try to appeal to the buyer and recommending 87 octane gas, when the engine is clearly made for 92 octane, but that would make people not to buy the vehicle.
As an experienced mechanic I can tell you: If you buy a vehicle that comes with a V6 or a turbo 4 / V8 or turbo 6, just go with the larger engine with no turbo. Turbos have their place, but not on your every day ride.
Yeah, true words. My mom still has her 65 mustang. It's in great shape. She is over 80, so my nephew inherited the car. Probably will keep on the move for the next generation. My newer car By decades is ready for the car grave (junkyard) lol.
To replace the cam, lifters, springs and rods and new gaskets on that Charger is under 1500 in parts, and thats upgrading to hellcat lifters. Should only be a 8-12 hour job. Totally worth fixing. This guy knows his stuff, but is a heavy on HIS opinions, which is 100% fine on his channel. Just dont take his opinions for yours.
3.5TT Ecoboost, which is unsurprisingly the popular buy among most police departments, has a similar issue as the 2.0T, @@griffonclaw. Supposedly, Ford fixed it with this year's FPIU and its 3.0TT Ecoboost, but I've yet to see if that holds true.
Actually the most popular engine in the Explorer police interceptor is the 3.7 V6, no turbos. That engine is only available in the police version, no other Fords have it anymore.
Before trying to live by those words, you should try to figure out how did he solved a turbo low boost problem by replacing spark plugs, especially, knowing that there maybe many reasons to the problem.
@@AegonIV When it comes to write a comment under Scotty Kilmer videos, everyone suddenly becomes the natural comedian. I decided to put a serious remark.
Thank you for helping customers for fifty years. I like listening to your back stories on the cars you fix. Helps us get interested and be vested stakeholders in our vehicles.
I've had three 5.7 Hemis with the 5 speed... about 400k between them, nothing crazy to report. Basic maintenance was all they needed. Great cars, in my experience.
Basic maintenance is not so basic. The current generation of people are lazy and careless and know zero things about any cars. They just f..king don't care. Can't even point at the air filter, let alone oil change or tire pressure check.
Dodge has a certain attitude and soul in some of their cars that's reminiscent of the muscle car era. They feel true to it in a way that GM and Ford forgot. Their vehicles, off the lot, with no miles, are immaculate and very nice (if you're willing to spring for some options). But they age like milk, and they give a certain "impression" of the people who drive them.
I got 65 k on my 2016 charger with the ZF transmission, so far all i've done is changed the oil an driven it hard like race car and it has not had one issue, such a great engine and car. With the ZF when I get in 8th gear I get 28 MPG with my Hemi too. Great video scotty.
Do those zf transmissions claim to have a lifetime fluid like they did years ago? I know that about 10 years ago when they made that claim it was actually recommended to change the fluid from 50k-75k miles. Just a heads up
Hello, the ZF 8HP transmition is from Germany. ZF is a german company and the HQ is in Friedrichshafen/Germany (ZF Friedrichshafen AG) I work there... so thats why I know :)
Always been a Mopar guy have had two trucks now 5.7s both make 395 horses both have been great trucks I maintain them well and you can still have fun as long as you take care of it thats what people don't understand
8 year old charger: *clearly not taken care of by the previous owners* Scotty: "Chrysler makes junk" I mean, the car looks like it was rode hard and put away wet, and still "runs" at 148k miles. I'd say that's pretty good. The current owner overpaying isn't the car's fault.
joe c. Exact same thing I was thinking, the thing probably had two or three owners and was not taken care of and more than likely abused on a daily and still running at 150 K miles but to Scotty it's junk😑
To be fair it is important for every vehicle not just FI setups. My dad taught me how to check and gap plugs when I was a kid. I always check the gap before installing. When I buy them at the gap needed I don’t think I have ever needed to adjust them but I always check. For my modified cars I always have to change the gap though. And how to do it is important as well. Watching people just bang them closed and then open them up with a screwdriver or the feeler gauges makes me cringe
I love your expressions remind me of my older brother-in-law who is a fine United States Marine mechanic during the Vietnam he say if you don’t succeed the first time get a longer ranch you said it to get a longer socket I just love that Scotty keep going brother and making my life so much easier
I'm gonna keep this one in mind as a Ford Fiesta St mk8 owner. Started watching Scotty just after buying this car. Imagine my face when i've doscovered here that 3 pot, gdi, turbocharged cars are basically complex money pits and i just got one ^^ Great channel.
Good maintenance is key. And remember that even though you have a sport trim level car you still have a budget car. Push it hard far less than treating it like a eco box.
Love you Scotty .You have 53 years of experience. From carbsto throttle bodies to fuel injectionto superchargers& turbos .2 speed powerglides tp 3 speed TH 350'S & 400'S to 700R4 to 4L60E to C4's,C6 's torque flight. You've been involved with many massive transitions throughout your career. What you have gained is wisdom .Something that the new young engineers can only dream about .So sad .
My wife and I still love our '04 durango (5.7l hemi, 5-speed auto) with 160k miles. :) it's a thirsty beast and Im not looking forward to changing 16 spark plugs, but the engine sounds great, doesnt tick, and plenty of power for days!
Geez. I guess my 2006 5.7 liter hemi Dodge Charger with 149,000 miles on the odometer that has had nothing but routine oil changes & tuneups and runs like new is an aberration ....😁
Scotty's awesome but like Alexander, I've had zero problems with the engine on my 148,000+ miles 2006 Hemi, which I bought a long time ago with 28,000 miles on it. Nothing but routine maintenance. Other issues sure including a bunch of tie rod replacements, but the engine on my R/T has been a joy.
@@cpfwriter Not to mention he says its impossible for a Dodge Ram to make it past 200k miles. Well no. My father has one with over 200k and still the original engine working just fine. The only thing wrong with it is rust.
Scotty that 5 speed automatic in the Charger was manufactured by Chrysler the same way most of the new 8 speeds are...under license. The 5 speed was a Mercedes transmission built in Kokomo the same way most of the 8 speeds are a ZF design made under license by Chrysler in Kokomo. The real 5 speed Chrysler (545RFE) was never used in the Hemi Chargers.
Scotty wants to fix the car, the dealership mechanic is just trying to spend some time until 5pm so he can go home. Replacing a turbo? Sounds like an all day work, nobody is gonna bother him with another car for the day.
Scotty, please help!! Toyota has recalled transmissions on 2012-2014.5 Camry's w/ 2.5 engines. Toyota refuses to replace the transmissions, only extend the Warranty 8yrs 150k miles. I bought a 2014.5 Camry the transmission does not shift right. The dealer says it's fine. Even if they replace it they only have a one year warranty on the repair. You said these transmissions were bullet proof. Now I and many Camry owners are screwed by Toyota. Please do a show on this issue.!!!!
had a recall on the transmission on my 2013 Camry SE 4 cycl. it was working fine before the recall and it works fine now. Try another dealer. See what they say.
Wow, good thing I didn't buy one of those. Test drove two of them, a 2012 SE and a 2013 XLE and the transmissions in both felt odd. About to just buy a Mazda 3.
Many modern cars use the spark plugs as the knock sensors. The computer uses the resistance of the plug when it fires to determine cylinder temps to set spark advance and on this Ford apparently the boost level. I love that you brought this up Scotty!
I never thought about that, I have a knock problem on my 94 mercury but I think its too old to have that type of technology yet. I'm suspecting the EGR system
Hey I need to buy some Scotty sunglasses I love those sunglasses I watch you all the time thank you for all this information I'm glad that you're around
Did you just passively throw a pack of new spark plugs on the top rad cover??? That's a bad move. Not only can it chip the porcelain, but it can crack the plugs. Sometimes hairline. It happened to a customer I know that got mechanical work done at our shop. The parts guy went and got the parts and smacked the plugs and all the parts on the parts table. Mechanics did the tune up, put the plugs in. About 2 days later the customer ended up coming back with his vehicle on a deck truck🙄. Problem was engine check light was flashing also when the mechanics were working on it broken plugs were also noticed. Another thing resultant of that was blown coil packs as well. This happened a few times. It was found out later that it wasn't faulty plugs but the way they were handled before installation. This incident may not happen all the time, but there is a chance that it can. Sparkplugs are robust when they're installed, but should not be rough housed when not installed and in boxes especially shocked from dropping even smacks on a work table. Plugs should be handled with care. Another thing. Don't tap the plugs while gapping them, another no no I learned from senior old school mechanics on these newer plugs. Other than that your videos are amazing.
@@edbyers6644 you can see how he edited the video. When he put the box down the plugs weren't out. You can see how he merged the video. Otherwise the video would be over an hour. Because he had to cover other vehicles.
I love my Mopar! I have a Scat Pack! Just take care of your car! Change oil and don’t beat them up! I’ve had a v6 too! Loved both! Just make sure you don’t get a beat up one ❤️ love your videos btw!
When Scotty says that bout long threads he’s talking bout the 2 Lil 10mm bolts on the coil. The Triton issue wasn’t coil, it was the short spark plug treads! Just had to tap and install new inserts on my 99 triton 5.4. But now we know if you just tighten to 22-25 ft. Lbs. instead of the recommendation of 12-13 ft. Lbs it’ll generally solve the problem. The single 7mm bolt on the triton coils wasn’t the problem.....just sayin.
I had a 2006 5.7 hemi, and at 107k miles one of the valve springs broke. The valve hit the piston, and made a lovely mess of that engine. I’ve never heard of that happening on a car before. I learned about hemis the hard way lol. They might look nice, but I wish I would have waited to get the Pontiac G8
Be carful buying a GM ( now moving to China) as the new mid engine corvette V8 is having the same problem. One guy picked up his new vette and had a destroyed engine before he got home on the first day. Same springs are in several of GM V8’s. Google it.
Do you want an apprentice? I install commercial doors and hardware all day. I like working with metal and tools. Love this show man. You have my support
I had a '92 Ford Ranger extended cab with a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine. It had 2 spark plugs per cylinder. It wasn't a horsepower beast by any means, but it was reliable & always ran very smoothly.
Scotty, Great video. Your discussion in regard to the Honda 1.5L Turbo-Charged design flaw reminds me of one of the most extreme cases of bad engine designs that were released to the public. These engines were the 5.7L GM diesels that were made between 1978-1985 and placed in many of GM's cars across all of their divisions, including Cadillac, during that time period. Maybe you can do a video that documents this case history.
I have seen it before. My friend told me his car needed a timing chain, i checked it and grabbed one wire and it came out with the spark plug attached to it.
My thoughts exactly. This is why I’ve come to find Scotty maybe a good mechanic but his personal feelings gets in the way most of the time. A mechanic should be able to give you an answer to your problem with definitive proof, “I say Chrysler products are trash I hear trash and so it’s all bad.”
Chrysler did not start using the 8speed in chargers or challengers until 2015. Update I have 192k miles on my rt awd magnum and I'm replacing the engine...dropped valve seat.
@@captainobvious5993 yes, I skipped a step there simplifying, the NAG1 was the Mercedes version of the 5HP30, then dodge also gave it its own name, still goes back to the internals/design was the ZF
5.7L Hemis are reliable and super easy to work on. I can have mine apart in a few hours. People who don’t know much could take it apart with instructions.
had a similiar problem with my hyundai tuson 1.6 T , after chancing turbo and intake manifold with no result, it turned out to be wiring harness had water intrusion issues, replaced it problem solved
I worked at a manufacturing company and ive seen it too many times. Engineers come out make changes when they aren't even the ones operating the machinery. And they cut corners to save money and get a 100k shipment returned by a customer. Stupidity at its best
@@bmshaven they sure are with some Chrysler modifications they aren’t completely identical but practically are. Only issues they ever really had was they sometimes get water in the oil but that’s a simple and not entirely common issue
I love it when you can fix something like that for that cheap. Especially when they were told a 4 or 5 figure cost. Then you just got to hope it continues to work
As a customer, I would be pretty angry if you tried shooting the parts cannon at a cylinder ionization code without first swapping the ignition coil from one cylinder to another and charged me for the part.
Specially used!!! A friend bought one used and every week of driving costs him about 1 thousand dollars in spare parts and labor!!! If You really want to drive one lease it!
They're not meant to be cheap. They're expensive to buy because they have the latest technology, which is also why they depreciate quickly. I enjoy them because they are good cars, and I know how to do the maintenance myself, so it's affordable for me.
@@ryanmckenna5254 Exactly BMW is made for higher target market (. Those who can afford). Just like buying a Lamborghini but the owner complains of gas consumption. It is not made for middle class per se
Yup save your money and save yourself from the headaches of buying a German car. With that money saved invest it and with your profit if you still really want a BMW do what the wealthy guys do and lease it or buy it and sell it to a chump 3 years later m2,m3,m4 tend to keep their value so I would go with one of those
I suggest you buy a IS350 for 2012 and really enjoy it. If you want something more m5 like buy the Lexus 350h... I have learned that the amount of money you pay to maintain a BMW ain't worth it. Buy a lexus 2nd hand with less the 50k miles and keep it for 5years without an issue.
I got rid of the '16 Chevy Malibu with the 1.5 turbo. (I knew the turbo was the issue.) After 4 months, I purchased a '18 Chevy Impala LT with a V6 engine. Great video.
Kinda funny how he doesn’t like to bash Toyota’s. At my shop 1 out of 3 cars that need repair are Toyota’s. Shitty water pumps, ac compressors, alternators and Evap canisters all day. My favorite car is a 4 runner but man the knock sensor is a horrible design and huge labor time. They may last a long time but they will need a ton of service.
It's because Toyota started using Delfi cheap trash auxiliary parts that they put in to GM vehicles in stead of Denso parts. The Nippon Denso part combined with Toyota engines is what gave them legendary reliability. If there is a Denso replacement parts available use them don't put the same trash back on to repeat the problem.
How about this one: Coolant leak in the valley at 85K miles in a Lexus 4.6L V8. Or repeated control arm issues in the LS460 models. Or a rear main seal oil leak. I am thinking about going back to an LS430 and just reconditioning it and using that as a daily beater.
@@paultrott3120 the 845/850RE are built under ZF license at Chrysler Kokomo 1, with Chrysler sharing engineering improvements they make to ZF. The same type of agreement existed when Chrysler began producing the A580 at Kokomo 2. The A580 held up very well in police service, which is the most demanding and destructive automotive application.
@@UnionThugg I know, and unlike Scotty i think Chrysler makes a pretty good product. The improvements they made to the 5sp and the 8 spd have been good.
@@anthonyroyal7994 Scotty doesn't seem to know where the trans came from. And the transmission is a Benz transmission that was used in many Mercedes. The Dodge Charger, Magnum, Challenger and the 300 are built on a Mercedes platform and the drivetrain from the engine back is Mercedes. Daimler Benz owned Chrysler in 2005 when these cars came out.

There are covers and covers. The Charger's engine cover is worth about 75 cents -- when brand new.

...the stupid cover.
@@dinofalabrino5406 coils should be water tight though. It's not as if they are being submerged in water.
Its called an acoustic cover because the direct injection engine created so much tappity tappity noise with the High pressure pump being driven by the exhaust camshaft right beside the brake booster created customer concerns of camshaft lifter noise. Old school car people didnt believe it and thought the engine was going to grenade.
I think cars hit their zenith in reliablilty about 20 years ago. They have gotten ever more complicated without much improvement in gas mileage.

@@briangreen430 No. You can blame the people who make the cars and the people who buy them. You must be a white man.

@@briangreen430 - It's true. I have read through an engineering report on a GDI engine before the car even came out, and it was pointing out how the extreme emission control was literally costs like 30% of the performance. As an experienced mechanic I can tell you: If you buy a vehicle that comes with a V6 or a turbo 4 / V8 or turbo 6, just go with the larger engine with no turbo. Turbos have their place, but not on your every day ride.

I've had three 5.7 Hemis with the 5 speed... about 400k between them, nothing crazy to report. Basic maintenance was all they needed. Great cars, in my experience.
couldn't agree more they last long with good maintenance you just need to take care of it.
If you don't beat the crap out of them and do the maintenance, the 5.7 and 6.4 engines will last a long time.
How thirsty is it?
Basic maintenance is not so basic. The current generation of people are lazy and careless and know zero things about any cars. They just f..king don't care. Can't even point at the air filter, let alone oil change or tire pressure check.
Have 3 trucks and 1 car with a hemi and a charger with a 3.5 . Power train wise all of them are solid . Ac just went out on the charger at 168k
Can I say keeping up on the maintenance is the key. I have a 2012 dodge Charger R/T 127,000 no tick, runs great. But I keep up on everything.
Dodge has a certain attitude and soul in some of their cars that's reminiscent of the muscle car era. They feel true to it in a way that GM and Ford forgot. Their vehicles, off the lot, with no miles, are immaculate and very nice (if you're willing to spring for some options). But they age like milk, and they give a certain "impression" of the people who drive them.
and probably don’t beat on it, most people don’t buy muscle cars to just putt around and drive miss daisy
Just a heads up
There's nothing better than a V8 natural aspirated engine it runs flawless in any kind of vehicle
Unfortunately, on a lot of modern cars, they'd stretch into the front seats;)

That plug gap is super important on boosted engines. Glad to see somebody that actually checks them before tossing them in the car.
Great video Scotty~! I learnt so much in this video, like measuring the spark plugs, very grateful for these helpful tips~!
Many modern cars use the spark plugs as the knock sensors. The computer uses the resistance of the plug when it fires to determine cylinder temps to set spark advance and on this Ford apparently the boost level. I love that you brought this up Scotty!
That's a terrible presumption OEMs make
I never thought about that, I have a knock problem on my 94 mercury but I think its too old to have that type of technology yet. I'm suspecting the EGR system

New plugs were already out of the box. You can see as he grabs them while checking the gap and the box is still in the same position.

@@paultrott3120 absolutely. Scotty is a Toyota fan.
I think this is one of your best videos Scotty. Covers a lot and was entertaining. 👍
The 5 speed auto is a Mercedes transmission Scotty. Chrysler is licensed to build them but they are a Mercedes design.
But it damn sure not a benz.. you're point?
@@anthonyroyal7994 Scotty doesn't seem to know where the trans came from. And the transmission is a Benz transmission that was used in many Mercedes. The Dodge Charger, Magnum, Challenger and the 300 are built on a Mercedes platform and the drivetrain from the engine back is Mercedes. Daimler Benz owned Chrysler in 2005 when these cars came out.
Now since Fiat bought them out they use ZF transmission. Funny that Peugeot bought Fiat.
Car makers: _"This full-sized 7,000 LB. SUV is our best seller; but how do we improve fuel efficiency?"_
ENGINEERS: *_"Easy. We install a lawn mower 3-cylinder with GDI, a Turbocharger, and a Supercharger. Oh, and we'll use lots of plastic [crap] to save weight!"_* 🤣

😎 I'm hunting for a new car and I'm taking all the information on morning from your videos to stay away from the scary ones thank you
Seems I watched him do a video recently where he declared the hemi to be the best V8. Things that make you go hmmm.
I wonder if he low key gets paid by car companies. Why is he comparing a charger to a new Supra
