Thai has proposed constructing a 128 kilometer long canal across the Thai isthmus, bypassing the Malacca strait. The project, which would be 450 meters wide and 25 meters deep, would cost around 28 billion dollars and take 10 years to construct. It would save 1,200 kilometers in travel distance, reducing fuel costs and C0₂ emissions. It would also invigorate Thailand’s economy and allow Chinese vessels to avoid the US military presence near Singapore. However, its excavation would displace thousands of people and harm the natural ecosystem. It would also divide Thailand, allowing Muslim insurgents in the south to expand their movement. Furthermore, it would create tension with Thailand’s regional neighbors and would need highly advanced logistics to compete with Singapore. Lastly, it would put Thailand into debt and the center of a global geopolitical rivalry between China, the US and India. Due to all these issues, the Thai canal has faced serious resistance. Despite this, the Thai government still wants to connect the two oceans and in November 2023, they announced a $36BN land bridge across the isthmus, that would include highways, railways and pipelines. Whether this or the original Thai canal will ever be built, we will just have to wait and see.

Where are you getting sources? There is no way the new canal would be big enough for all, or even most traffic away from the malacca strait.
Also “china solving the problem of choke point” by creating another choke point with a US ally, is a bit silly statement to make.

sea level canal is a great idea. don't make it 450m wide and 25m deep, make it narrower and shallower for initial stage. once openned, then they can generator revenue, and with that money, keep expanding the canal.

Even with the canal being constructed, China would not remove all the chokepoints on its shipping routes. At the entrance to the Andaman Sea is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which are Indian territories. So even with the canal being constructed, in times of conflict, China's shipping can still be disrupted by an Indian naval presence.

A canal, like the Grand Canal is best. Too much trouble to unload ship, load on trucks, transport to the eastern port, unload and load again.

  • @thomaswwwiegand
    @thomaswwwiegand 17 днів тому

your header sugests they wanna build a canal, but that is NOT.
They want to use 2 ports, deload and rail transfer to other and reload.
That is the main reason it must be done very WELL or the benefit in time is too low to be profitable.
Mean deload and direct on rail cargo, and each whatever 20 to 50 container the train MUST go, then they might be able to save time for shipping around Singapore
PLUS maybe a rearranging of several ships load on the other side,
PLUS a very good rail track to Bangkok could also save costs for internal transport also.
So they have to do it BIG on harbouer = several ships, rail, 2 lanes and cargo not standing around = might be good.

Actually, the Thais abandoned the Kra canal proposal but instead they want to built two ports on each side with a land or rail bridge. That entails unloading all the cargoes on the western side into a train or trucks, travel 128 km, unload all the cargoes into the ships waiting on the eastern side. Any delays will negate all the savings of time and cost sailing through the Malacca straits.

I think the Secret Key for this to become Reality is Geopolitics.
-First, the most important is the Catalyst Spark that would initiate the Start of Geopolitical Realignment of the Countries in the Region. The most probable ones is when Malaysia become a Rogue State, either it become an Full-blown Islamic State or/the Ascendance of a Radical Extremist Leadership that would come from an uprising of Political Islam in the country.
-Second, the Leadership will try to threaten Israel Ships from passing in the Malacca Strait. Henceforth, having a to limit Israel from it’s Allies in the Region and beyond, like Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Thailand. We can also include Vietnam and Taiwan which is already getting closer with Israel being facilitated by US and key allies/partners in the region.
-While on Thailand’s side, will be Strategically Coerced by China to accept the building of the Kra Canal thru Blackmailing it by using it’s Vassal States surrounding Thailand(Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia)to caused Problems and Issues for Thailand that can only be mediated by China, as long it accepts the canal Project while trying to portray itself as Neutral despite it being a US Treaty Ally. (FYI, China is already doing this Dirty Tactics, like screwing Vietnam using Cambodia as front, example is funding/building of Military Naval Base facing the Gulf of Thailand, and also a Canal Project that will link Mekong River(in Cambodian side) into Cambodia’s Coast facing Gulf of Thailand, that will altogether bypassed the Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam)
-Back into Malaysia, the Anti-Israel Policy is at full swing and will be expanded to include those countries supporting Israel, becoming a full-blown Anti-Westerner and their Allies.
Because of these, Singapore would be under Threat by Malaysia, in terms of National Security like Territorial, Economic, Food/Water/Energy Resources, and many Cross-Strait Issues would be brought up by Malaysia against Singapore.
    Continuation:
-As Tensions rise between Malaysia and Singapore, Maritime Trade Disruption will be inevitable, especially the Malacca Strait that’s already banned Westerners and it’s Allies because of their Support for Israel.
Because of that, Maritime Trade Routes would have rerouting away from Malacca Strait into The Indonesian Straits(which Indonesia is going to openly welcome, Probably Angering Malaysia which the former may dismissed), which initially will benefits Indonesia but sooner the carrying Traffic cannot be sustained and a more reliable Routes are needed, and that’s where Thailand’s Kra Canal Project will have support from Western Countries(North America/Europe/Oceania), and their allies in the region, like India, Japan, South Korea, The Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, including Singapore and probably Indonesia.
-When this happens and Thailand decided to start building the Canal, it will angered Malaysia and will be threatened by these Project, and China could also not be spared and Issues of Human Rights of Uiyghur Muslims in Xinjiang would be brought up. And Maritime Dispute in South China Sea could be also raised against China PRC.
    Part3: To be Continue...
-Retaliation by the Western Alliance headed by UK, US, Australia with their Allies help would try to destabilize Malaysia, especially on East Malaysia in partnership with US-PH and UK-BR by bringing out the historical disputes in the area and how Malaysia Coerced them to be part of Malaysian Federation. Singapore will support these knowing it's responsible for pushing the States there to be part of the Union only to be left them in a Colonial Status under Malaysia while Singapore goes to become Independent & Rich, forgetting it's responsibility on North Borneo States that left in the Limbo, occupied/colonized/taken advantaged by Malays for their Lands and Resources.

The proposal for this project hasn't been submitted to the Thai's parliament. So, it was just all talk. Don't worry guys. It has potential to being tremendous amount of wealth to Thailand. But It has fetal flaw. Democracy... Government has to buy all those land back from the citizen. It would take around 40years to buy those back even if government has the money. It would take another 50years to dig out the land that much distance. so... not gonna happen. Unless there's a Huge investment from somewhere.

⚠The information in the video is wrong. They built land bridges, not canals. And every ship can come and use the service by just paying the shipping fee. (this is not about China and the United States.) The purpose is to earn money for the country like Singapore used to do.
Build ports on both sides and connect them with trains. This means that the ship does not have to cross to the other side, but instead will transport the container to the other side by train.

Its infrastructure, education and health system are all creaking and groaning away. Better off spending +20B into their economy to benefit all citizens instead of concentrating on a glamour project which the Muslim majority southern Thais are not going to be so happy about.
