21:52 Appreciate the shoutout! FYI the statistic about animated films making up 25% of the box office was calculated for 2024 BEFORE Inside Out 2 made $1.6 billion (and Moana 2 might also blow that out of the water) so I imagine that percentage is now much higher!

The Lego movie understood their limitations from the beginning, and worked it into the story. The Minecraft movie threw their limitations into the trash before they started.

Some people work best in a box, it challenges their creativity! And a lot of people, namely investors and CEOs, think ticking off a checklist will solve the human algorithm of making the most money.

I'm an old man, and NO ONE called Star Wars Episode 4 at the time. When the VHS was available to buy around 1990, people did notice the numbering on the scroll, but it was never on the posters or cover art. It was only when the prequels were on the horizon that people started to use Episode V for Empire or whatever.

15:58 Exactly this. Minecraft is about Steve who finds himself in this world but it is implied that the whole universe is made of these blocks. Not that he found him self suddenly found himself in a universe that is made of blocks.

  • @YPAnimations

People don't remember How to train your dragon was based on a book series (i think 10ish books). The OG movies only had a few things in common with the book series, and the things they left out would probably make a really good movie series as well. I was hopeful when the live action was announced that it could follow more along with the books, but it is clear from the trailer that it is just a remake of the animated film.

the books are SOO different from the movie that it pretty much an adaptation in name only. making it closer to the books would make a COMPLETELY different movie. which would be the better call than remaking another animated movie just to make it live action

100% agree with Nico, and i think committing to the minecraft rules like they did with the lego movie would make a massive difference to its benefit. i think most people would like it better even if they dont know it. I dont mind that they make it look more realistic, like a super nice version of minecraft but sticking to the game rules and scales of objects would be much better.

That creepy feeling Niko is talking about is what I call corporate strip mining of nostalgia, like somebody coming out dressed as your best friend and trying to hang with you while reaching into your pocket for your wallet. The Star Wars sequels were the worst for it, all the directly copied lines and scenes in episode 8 especially felt incredibly creepy to me as a huge fan of episode 5 and 6.

The greatest fundamental issue with the "Minecraft Movie" from the ground up seems to be that they clearly went with the concept of "Anything in the Minecraft IP generally" Which has led to a LOT of the core elements of the movie being more driven by "Minecraft Dungeons" rather than "Minecraft".
This even brings some sense to the choice of "4-Player" type narrative they have going with the main cast (Minus Jack Black). But overall leaves the entire thing feeling hollow for anyone wanting the classic "Minecraft" experience.

in an interview the director said they didn't want to use game assets or game design language because "fans have already made Minecraft Movies on UA-cam, etc, and are already amazing..."
But that completely ignores how Hollywood legitimizes an art style like what Lego Movie and Spiderverse did.
Like, why not bring on all of those independent creators and make a MASTERPIECE.
You can tell that the Minecraft movie is not a passion project, but simply an obligation

“How to train your dragon” live action is the first “live action remake” that I don’t hate.
Initially when I heard about it, I was like “Why”, and “it will be bad”, but after watching the trailer, I was like “It’s actually pretty cool, and they nailed Toothless, and I don’t hate it!”
Also, since it’s basically similar team, director, etc - seems like it’s done by people who really care, so I don’t mind them earning a bit more money, so that they later might make other animated films.

Agree with Dean saying that the Hiccup actor in How to Train your Dragon looks a little older, 28yo may be pushing it a little haha. But Mason Thames was only 16 when the filming begun, so although he does look a little more mature than 15, i am just glad they didn't do what most movies do and cast a fully grown man as a young teenager.

I think we, as adults, are overlooking a big benefit of live action remakes. Kids can watch a cartoon and they know it isn't real, but setting it a real world with real people, it removes a barrier which ups the sense of wonder. I remember being a young dinosaur obsessed kid watching Jurassic Park. Yes, they could tell new stories but also, this year is the first year (so far, prior to Wicked) that all the top 10 movies are sequels/remakes/existing IP. They go where the money is.

For so long, I have been wishing that the Alien Movies would become a bit more genre-hopping instead of trying to recapture the feel of previous movies, for example, if:
Alien is a Haunted House movie in space, and Aliens is a Vietnam War movie in space.
I think that they should really do a Sci-fi Western based loosely on the Alien vs Predator 1990 comic (the one with Machiko Noguchi and Broken Tusk)
    Some other examples might be:
    - A post-apocalyptic survival movie. (Mad Max/ Fury Road) : Stay ahead of the Xenos to reach the lunch pad and escape.
    - A space station heist movie (Oceans): A classic heist of a space station turns out to be corporate espionage on a Wayland Research outpost
    - ASci-fi Noir Detective Thriller (Blade Runner/ The Maltese Falcon): A sheriff of a backwater Human Outpost is investigating a collection of missing person cases, leading to them discovering a secret Wayland-Yutani lab is behind it

the problem of live action vs animation is real actors have contracts that say things about how much face time they have and studios know audiences respond to face time anyway so you get things like Master Chief basically never actually in his full armor. So much so that Dredd featuring Judge Dredd actually having his helmet on the whole time was a notable anomaly. Whereas animation has freedom to actually utilize unhindered visual storytelling. Imagine having to animate Goku but always having to show his entire face the entire time. And because you're doing that the actor for piccolo also negotiates equal face time.

    • @zyonchaos1818
      @zyonchaos1818 Місяць тому

The problem is also compounded when the actor playing the character and the studio behind the production really don't care for the story or background of the character! Dredd is harder because there is still part of his face visible despite the helmet, but Master Chief could have been played by anybody and it doesn't feel like the studio got that!

14:46 Niko the problem with what you're saying is that those kind of details would only matter to a small subset of possible viewers. most people who are fans of the game would probably be with Wren on this, and would be perfectly happy with an "impression" of being in the game world, but most importantly you want the parents who have to pay for the tickets to feel like they get something out of it as well.
I played a little bit on the mobile version back around the time when you guys were playing it co-op on Node. the mobile version didn't have the depth of gameplay that the full version had, but I also don't see any reason why the blockiness needs to be a constraint at all other than to reinforce the idea that that's the world you're in. so from my perspective it would have been fine to just have everything be live action, but then as the characters or objects take damage, you would have to be clear somehow that everything breaks down to blocks... sandwich crumbs and sand etc would be tiny blocks, and to me that allows a much more interesting basis for a story if all the underlying physics is cube-based rather than globular... for example that opens up the possibility that all the monsters in the story are triangular based, so there could be a pyramid shaped virus/alien race/genetic mutation causing a zombie apocalypse.

21:03 dude just said he hasn't even seen the original and said the kid's way too old😂
24:30 the reason why i don't mind or think of the movie as "better or fancier version "is because it's like, you wonder what would dragon riding would look like in live action right? The original movie is beautifully animated but people want that sauce that can only come from live action movies and I think httyd makes perfect sense to have a live action version(unlike Moana)
Because There are so many cool choices for action sequences that can be done in the live action that animated one hasn't done. Like, choosing to use one take during certain scenes, showing how you would realistic ride a dragon and not fall down.
What I'm trying to say is, I think live action dragon riding can give us the feeling they gave us during the sand worm riding scene in lastest Dune movie.
At the end of the day, what it comes down to is, people want to see what it would look like irl.

I want to add another live action from a 2d anime which is Parasyte on Netflix. I think what made the anime version really good is how cute the parasyte was, it's voice and shape yet how powerful it was. They were way off this aesthetic in the live action one. The live action was a different story a sequel to the anime and I loved it, yet it kind of missed the suspense and anticipation in the action scenes from the anime.

Aliens falls into the trap I call the "...but THIS time it's BIGGER!" trap. Sequels so often fall into the plot of doing the same thing as the first movie but with more/bigger/stronger antagonists. Like Stranger Things season 1, they spend the entire season trying to kill this UNKILLABLE creature. Then season two comes along and they're like, this time there's 1000 of them! Just feels lazy and makes the protagonists of the first season/movie feel weak lol

Standing still and yelling for extended periods of time is quintessential to DBZ, that’s gonna look silly as hell live action

I dont know if christian reads the comments, but a consideration.
Love where that is rn, but when we go to wide shot, the chat is in front of everything.
Would love if we could have a little smaller chat maybe? The placement is very good tho

I agree with Niko pretty much all around here. Minecraft trailer gave me the major ICK. And I am insulted with the How to Train to Dragon. "if you love your mommy then you'll see it." is the vibe. I can't enjoy things that are clearly made for the money and just poo on the people who loved them. :(
*edit. Wallie is awesome dude. You're wrong :D I love his little face.

How is Toy Story 4 your favorite?! I hated that movie. I felt like it just took all of the emotional development for the previous movies and just threw them in the trash

I didn’t start judging live action remakes until sometime after Jungle book. I think because they were getting into films that didn’t feel that old that it felt more about making money than anything.

Old films I’m okay with, Moana live action remake, too soon.

Adding on Nico's argument, I want to see all these animated worlds in real life but when they do, they always change a characters design and Ethnicity and then its just pointless, because it is literally a different character that's supposed to be the same which doesn't work because as a fan you always wanted to see what that character would like 1 to 1 in real life, and if they don't want to do that then make a new original story that doesn't have established characters in it.
Plus a good Animated movie is Timeless, even the best Life action movies eventually age and feel or look old

37:35: Pretty sure, the reason was because he decided the story was too big for one movie and that what he wanted to do in the earlier episodes wasn't possible.

People claim the live action remakes make it seem like they think the animated versions didn't matter.
I actually DON'T get that vibe.
The Disney classics and Avatar: The Last Airbender are held to such a high degree which is why they were even on the radar to be remade in the first place. I think doing it in live action is simply for the intrigue of seeing it done in a different format. As someone who LIVES animation, I DO find it intriguing to watch and the movies are often NOT as bad as people make them out to be. If there weren't already an animated version people were so nostalgic about, most of these remakes would be received better.
That said, they are a little flawed. And I think part of that is BECAUSE they're remakes in the first place. So they're constantly balancing being faithful vs being original. And being TOO faithful makes it worthless as there's nothing new or original about it. Being too original makes it feel like the animated version was already laid out the blue prints that they didn't follow.
The OTHER thing holding it back is the iffy topic that people don't want to talk about except when being divisive which is the "woke" aspect of entertainment now days.
One one side: You're for it and hate people calling stuff woke because clearly you're merely supporting something you believe in for the sake of lifting each other up and bringing more representation to females, minorities, etc.
On the other side: You want to focus less on checking boxes and making changes for the sake of checking those boxes, but are concerned that these attempts to be progressive are such a priority to the industry now that they're willing to sacrifice good storytelling.
The problem being that in doing these things, you're also purposely being excusive to individuals who aren't cis women or minorities. And this crowd also dismisses any other view points as sexist, racist, or some kind of phobic. What's worse is that you have actual racism and sexism mixed in the arguments as well and then everyone just gets lumped together.
But there's also the possibility that the industry is hiding behind progressiveness for the sake of using it as the excuse for why people don't like their movies.
Example: "People just didn't like the Ghostbusters reboot because they're sexist".
I only point to this because I think they tried so hard to make Katara a girl boss that don't need no man in the ATLA remake that they stripped away her relationship with the other characters and any actual earned character development. In removing the relationship with her and Aang, they took away HER moment to calm Aang down at the Southern Air Temple.

I still can't believe Niko thinks Toy Story 2 is the worst one when it is by far the best Toy Story movie.
Edit: And he doesn't like Walle 💀, Niko's Pixar card is revoked 😆
