I've been on that trip, Queenstown New Zealand. The pilots go through heaps of training and only do spins like that in designated areas where they can't damage anything. I felt safer on that boat then most cars.
The story goes that drivers employed at Shotover have never driven a boat before they commence any training.... The reasoning I gather was "the fellows have NO BAD HABITS" and so they are and remain the best trained in the tourism industry!!! You need to drive one of these in winter when blocks of ice are floating down river! My family once mined on that river... it is the best place in the world... fifty years later, it is still gob smackingly beautiful
These adrenaline junkies (and idiots) would probably compare this to extreme roller coasters......... but it's not. Even the most extreme roller coasters are precisely controlled machinery. In these boats...... they place their life (and maybe there children and love ones, which may come along for the ride) in the hands of the drivers. Let's hope that your driver doesn't take a sip of whisky right before the ride eh.
Been there. Done that twice. Was an absolutely amazing experience. Great company, great holiday, beautiful country. Can't recommend it enough. All you whingers don't have to go. Stay at home and leave the fun for others.
Yes.. mostly all over New Zealand, however this is one of several rivers in New Zealand that do have commercial boat trips. And while it seems a only a "canned" amusement park ride to you, it is also a demonstration of the very versatile jetboat, a New Zealand invention that opened up the backcountry to many farmers and adventurers.
So what happened on your family Kayak trip? Well it was really piece full on the water until from out of nowhere a big red jet boat came round the corner and killed everyone.
I'm no environmentalist or PETA member but to me there is just something wrong with beautiful scenery being assaulted buy a bright red noisy jet boat full of people.
seriously.. this guy comes really close to obstructions.. day in and day out there will be eventually an incident that will take place... looks cool but i have to tell u.. i give it a high risk factor the way this dude drives.. LOL
Correction - two japanese people died, a newly married couple on their honeymoon. That sucks but to keep it in perspective, the Shotover Jets have carried over 2 million people over the last 30 years and there are plenty more queuing up to have a go. You might stay home so you don't get run over by a bus but there's plenty of people out there willing to give life a go.
Wow....can you imagine getting slung off that boat into those rocks. I wonder if the passengers are buckled. I'll bet they have to sign a waver to get on that ride.
They might have "incredible record of safety", but IF something goes wrong, the whole boat would end up sleeping with the fishes.. You never know if a steering-wire snaps, jet-engine breaks down or something. I would probaly try it myself if i had the chance, but there are always a chance.....
A lot of the comments say stuff like it should be outlawed and once day bad stuff will happen. Well the thing is all those people payed money for that driver to take them on a fun ride. They could tell him to go half as fast, but everyone just wants to go fast. If people think it's too dangerous they just wont do it.
- Holy shit i'm going pretty fast, if i crash the thing and passengers get injured or die i'll get sued real bad... Screw it, if i go fast enough we'll all die on impact. I'll call it, the extrem boat ride, extrem with no e because you never get to see the end, gniagagahahahahah.

Call me stupid.
Here we where Jetting up a beautiful river when out of nowhere a group of Kayaker's... what a way to ruin a great experience
That is 10 times better than a rollercoaster
The company guaranteed free funeral insurance coverage
I'm cancelling my trip to New Zealand. I'm no environmentalist, but this is obscene.
And the pilot gets paid for this much fun... Man, that´s life!
this looks extremely dangerous

that driver can become a drift king.
Probably one of the COOLEST things I have ever seen as a ride.
Steve Irwin was highly skilled as well. I don't want to be on a boat like that when these geniuses find out their true skill levels.
This boat is great, I can recommend it.
This is the place where Gordon Laing of cameralabs usually goes to when testing the burst speed of the DSLR units that he reviews. AWESOME!
Been there. Done that twice. Was an absolutely amazing experience. Great company, great holiday, beautiful country. Can't recommend it enough. All you whingers don't have to go. Stay at home and leave the fun for others.

Doing a 360 Hamilton turn in that boat would be a blast!
Looks like fun , Queensland. Is this in Australia?
Driving such boat without a safe-cage and helmets is real extreme!
Thats a good way to increase your life insurance premiums.haha
this is the peak of awesomeness
I swear I could see the hand of Darwin waving behind a rock.
It's sad but somewhat true. Many (BUT NOT ALL!!!) people fall into that mindset.
Wow! I feel bad for the poor buddy in the canoe that will one day get plowed through.
Agreed.... it's destroying everything in our once fine nation.
Oh wow! That totally seems like something I'd like to do never.
That is awesome! I don't think most people will be able to enjoy the view though. He is flying through the canyon!
I would freaking give anything to be able to drive that boat.

У нас тоже экстрим есть.Мигрант за рулём маршрутки такое иногда покажет,что жизнь перед глазами пройдёт.
Imagine that guy having a bad day
Looks like there is no shortage of people with a death wish. That is one of the most incredibly dangerous rides I have ever seen.
shotover jetboats: screwing fishermen all day everyday
just one question,
where do I get one ?

So what happened on your family Kayak trip? Well it was really piece full on the water until from out of nowhere a big red jet boat came round the corner and killed everyone.
This looks awesome! I have to have a go at this before leave the planet.. lol... :-)
I will not in a million years risk my life on that one. Open calm sea, yes please - Inches from rocks and shit, no thanks.
I hate cheap intrusive thrills on the costs of our environment!!!! Just go surfing, thats working with nature, and it gets your blood pumping too
cant believe they dont provide safety helmets, that would never get allowed in the UK
Dorifto in the Wata? hmmmm i like...
Surely and ex-drifting champion .
I'm no environmentalist or PETA member but to me there is just something wrong with beautiful scenery being assaulted buy a bright red noisy jet boat full of people.
Чисто семейный отдых )))
the companies, who do the jet-boat trips, are highly skilled and are judged as the best in the world.
Jesus Christ! That's bat shit crazy!! Have fun, good luck, I'll notify your next of kin
.....when drifters become boat drivers..
His insurance must be stupid expensive
One little error, and this is the death. Stupid.
Human is not a robot.

This is what called " Like Lying" !
Nice! That is not possible with my boat
Shouldn't have given the remote control to the granny at the back who suffers from Alzheimer's and is partially blind...
See how filthy that water is?
Jeez.

New Zealand invented jet boats, and is the best at driving them.
It is extreme until some Asian guy take things in his hands...
coolest job ever.
They don't live they are born waiting to die. This looks like loads of fun btw.
boat can drift, that's sure !
They might have "incredible record of safety", but IF something goes wrong, the whole boat would end up sleeping with the fishes.. You never know if a steering-wire snaps, jet-engine breaks down or something. I would probaly try it myself if i had the chance, but there are always a chance.....
Yes, it's sad, but just an accident can stop this madness.
A lot of the comments say stuff like it should be outlawed and once day bad stuff will happen. Well the thing is all those people payed money for that driver to take them on a fun ride. The part of the river where these boats operate are sealed off. There are no other boats, canoes or whatever on that part of the river.
