I discovered Ilaiyaraaja much much later in my teen life. Before that I was only AR fan (even now too). But Ilayaraja music didn't come to me like a bombastic music train but like a sublte river. It won't shock you or excite you but you wonder at the natural beauty subconsiously and make you feel human.
Considering his life as a dalit at some remote village, living in poverty, loosing his father at early age, he has acheived a lot. Unless a person has tremendous confidence on himself, it's going to be difficult to have a life trajectory such as his.
As bharadwaj says, Ilayaraja is a great guy, with great attitude. Although he behaved like a "niyanta" in stages, Ilayaraja was very honest and understood who he was.
A person like Ilayaraja won't come to the industry again. He is just unbelievable.

At the early teens of A.R. Rehman, he struggled a lot financially. At that juncture Music Director Sri Ramesh Naidu given to the teenage A.R. Rehman an opportunity to play key board in his orchestra. He worked with Sri Ramesh Naidu for two years and then joined in Raj Koti team. Sri A.R. Rahman told himself at several public meetings.
Incomparable genius is Ilayaraja. We are fortunate to have heard his music especially the songs of SP Balasubrahmanyam and S Janaki.

Annakkili got released in 1976 . It did not run for 10 days in my homeb town Madurai. But people liked the songs very much. For a month Ilaiyaraja was the talk of the town. So they released the movie next month again, and the movie ran for over 200 days...just for the songs...annakkili songs were played all over TN in every nook and corner.
When I stepped into Tamil Nadu from Andhra...I felt like I am stepping into land of ilaiyaraja...such was the impact of IR on me in 1980s

That’s very rude of you addressing Mr Bharadwaj as old man. You should address him as senior sir or guruvu garu. Old man should not be used. I will assume that you lack proficiency in English but an admirer and fan of this gentleman. Sadly for the past few decades Telugu mainstream media and social media do not address others with respect. Even P M and CM are not spared. Sad. They are like frogs in a well and learn a lesson or two from Tamizh Kannada and Malayalam media and never address others in first person
