HQ LS Monaro 253 V8

  • The Holden HQ LS Monaro was a strange beast, sitting somewhere between the luxury "Premier" and performance "GTS". The "Luxury" in Luxury Sport included vinyl roof trim, bucket seats, Premier wood grain dash and quad light front end. There was no denying the 2 door HQ Monaro Coupe body was good looking from every angle, and to my mind the fitment of that Prem grille was a masterstroke in class and style. It became common for owners of lesser HQ's to lift the Premier front end and fit that to their car - but the LS came that way stock. And by fitting the Aussie built 253 4-Litre V8, the LS was just about as Australian as they come. Luxury also meant the fitment of an automatic transmission - in the case of the LS this was the Tri-Matic - the perfect mate for the V8. I know from first hand experience that the Tri-Matic transmission was as tough as nails.
    Dennis from the Monaro Club of Victoria showed me over his vehicle, detailing its discovery back in 1999 at a wrecking yard while he was on vacation at Nagambie. Most would write such a car off, put it in the too-hard basket, dismiss it as "too far gone". But not Dennis. He set about returning the LS to its former glory - and what a magnificent job he has done. A credit to Dennis and a finer example LS would be hard to find.

    Tri /matic made at Woodville Adelaide. I inspected many of the parts,,,,,,,,,

    Holden engines for the HK series were 307 and 327 cubic inch, no 253, that was introduced into the HT series along with 308 and 350 cubic inch.......

      the 253 and 308 were installed in later HTs, replacing the 307 Chevrolet during the HT run.

    What a truly terrible engine the 253 was. It was made in Australia,that explains it!
