  • When browsing through the newsfeed on Nintendo Switch, I came across a pretty unusual game - BAKERU. I watched the trailer and it appeared to be a cartoonish platformer set in (fictional) Japan, with all its prefectures presented in form of levels, with Japan-related collectibles and trivia. A perfect combination for a casual game, if someone asked me.
In BAKERU, you play as a bake-tanuki (a type of friendly yokai) that must save Japan from evil spirits. In his quest, our hero uses a haradaiko drum set. Although the game seems pretty casual at first glance, I assume that the later levels become pretty challenging, with tricky enemy movement and attack patterns as well as boss fights. The combat is satisfying ("drumming" on L and R is kinda hilarious), music and graphics are cheerful, the unlockables interesting (in each level, you collect several items related to a specific prefecture or region of Japan as well as several trivia, some of which are mind-blowing e.g., our hearing is affected by eating o.O). All in all, it is a great project of passion. The only downside is the current price, which is pretty high for an indie game, even for the Nintendo e-Shop standards.
