When you tighten the wheel lugs, always go in a cross pattern and not in a circle to evenly tighten the wheel on. Great job.
I always try to do that ! Thanks for the tip!
I’m really enjoying these how to videos, I’ve only done both front axles on my 2003 pilot but it’s cool seeing the rears done!
Thanks for the feedback and welcome to the channel!
Wow! Great job with the repair and good step-by-step video that took care of the clicking noise. Done nearly the same steps during my Pilot lift installation and had the same upper shock absorber nut break. Pilot Overland goes onto the next adventure.
Thanks! I enjoy working on my Hondas!

that slide hammer vise grip thing saved my life
Same!
Great video, this will help with a vibration issue I'm having with my pilot. One thing i did notice though. At 24:50 you grabbed the other bolt laying on the ground to put in the upper control arm. If that bolt is pointed, it goes for the upper shock mount. Trust me when I say this, I had an issue with that bolt on the passenger side of my 04 pilot. I also used my kobalt impact gun to tighten it on and it stripped the captive nut on the back. Had to retap the nut for a different bolt and go that route. Just a heads up, might be why the nut broke off the back. 👍
Thanks for the video, I'm in the process of changing my rear wheel bearing and found out just like you there are several bolts that need removing in this process to get the "wiggle room" . Was funny because I said the same thing, not giving me us much wiggle room as I was hoping for lol. Anyway I can see my upper control arm needs to get separated somehow from either bolt or ball joint, and here in wny rustbelt it may end up needing replacing but that's life. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for sharing the rear axle diy
Specially I checked my 06 pilot with the 3 different pro mechanics but they can never locate where the clunking noise coming from
All they guessed was sway bar bushings which has no movement at all
So my problem might be the same as yours
I would think clunking in the rear is most likely sway bar end links or shocks. What brand of shocks do you have?
Question sir! What Napa part number did you used in the front? And most importantly how’s it holding?
Leaving a dollar store the other day my rear wheel dropped down of the edge of a cement curb and it caught the bottom of the shock mount and broke it off so I'm in the process of figuring out how to best fix that. So far I've figured there are two options, replace the whole wheel bearing assembly or take it to a welder and have him weld it back together. The problem is that it's cast iron and cast iron doesn't weld well. There's apparently a special technique for welding cast iron and there's a 50/50 chance it won't hold. Good news is the wheel-bearing assembly only costs around 700 bucks lol. Of course, I could go to the salvage yard and pull one off a honda there for considerably cheaper but yeah fun stuff.
Also, have an oil leak coming from the front valve cover. That's being put aside at the moment considering how much of a pain it is to get that front valve cover off. I say it's a pain and it is but it's much easier than the rear one.
Just wanted to thank u been looking all day to fine others was in Spanish
No problem I hope it helped!
Amazed that regular socket is strong enough to be used in impact gun
Lol it has held up to many axle replacements :)
@@steve2736 thanks for the advice! I am pleased to report that I have upgraded to an impact socket and will keep your advice in mind here forward!
Been watching your videos. How have the napa cv axles holding up for you?
I would say they are doing well. Plus they have a lifetime warranty. In my experience a subframe drop helps and so does keeping the front sway bar connected
@GotterAdventure I didn't have good experience with some aftermarket shocks. I've been leery about aftermarkets ever since but your response gives me confidence.
@polovan23 OEM is best if you can afford it. Otherwise, we have to find good quality third-party.
Don't forget the new spring or c clip on the diffential stub shaft.
Bri quick question I did HRG subframe drop and did lift ..
N put 255/75r17 set
But vibrates while driving 30 -40 .
Now if I change my Axel's will stop vibrates? As they both got leaks grease.
Reply please thx
Had my 2 rear back axles changed on my 2008 honda pilot and now my vtm-4 light is on my abs light is on and so is my vsa light
One of your wheel speed sensors may have been damaged or is disconnected. They are pretty easy to damage during axle replacement. If a shop did the repair they should be able to diagnose
what did you use in place of your sway bar?
I didn't replace them. I have airsprings that help. My front shocks are stiffer than stock which helps too.
HRG subframe drop would keep you from having to replace axles.
This axle had more thanks 256,000 miles on it. Almost 80k with the lift :)
@@GotterAdventure you had mentioned the amount of front axles you've replaced. If you have more time than money it's completely understandable.
@@frankietuned It is a bit of a story, but the oem front axles failed while I had the front swaybar disconnected. Not that I am using Napa axles with the bar connected the axles have been doing well. Not to mention the lifetime warranty on the Napa axles :)
New subscriber here. Can you give me some a good advise base of your experience before I will buy a 2006 or 2007 Honda Pilot? Is there any big issues of the maintenance? Hopefully for your reply. Keep safe
Welcome to the channel! Any vehicle with age can have issues, but I think the Pilot is a pretty reliable high mileage vehicle. You will want to know the age of the timing belt. They should be replaced every 100,000 miles. I would suggest replacing transmission and rear differential fluids with fresh Honda fluid. The main thing to watch out for is rust in the rear where the subframe meets the body. It can be repaired, but it really is the Achilles heel of this generation of Pilots.
@@GotterAdventure thank you bro. Now I have decided to concentrate for looking either 2006 to 2008 used Honda Pilot. Keep safe and to your family.
Best of luck, my Pilot has over 255k miles for reference 😀
You've probably already bought your pilot but maybe this can help someone else looking to buy one. The front valve cover on these pilots tends to leak oil and it is a bit costly to repair because of the difficulty in removing the valve cover.
So was it the axle ?
your spare tire should be remove and put it up your roof rack , if you pop a tire off your rim as you off road , you'll be happy its on the roof
That is good advice! At this point space is limited on my roof. I will probably roll like it is for now and think about this conversation when the problem arises...LOL
is that a KYB shock ?
Yes, they are the best I have found. The Monroe load leveling shocks kept rattling
@HondaPIlotOverland.... help!! I have a very interesting issue with my 08 Pilot, it has a 2.5" lift kit with subframe spacers from HRG Engineering but it drives strangely. Recently alot of work has been done to the pilot which includes: Suspension, lift kit, subframe spacers, lower control arms (Old one had bad ball joints), and both Axles have been replaced (I blew an original one). As a result of all that work, I knew that I need to get an alignment, For the past two weeks it has been acting weird. I noticed that my Chamber was very much in the negative side, today when I have dropped it off at the alignment center, I reversed in to parking lot so that I can show them the issue and thats when I noticed something odd. The Chamber was now completely opposite, and very positive. Something isn't right in the state of Denmark! thats for sure, do you have any ideas as to what I should look at if this issue cannot be remedied by the alignment place.
Thank, DT
If you don't already have them I would recommend installing camber bolts in the front and adjustable control arms in the rear. Then I would take it to an alignment tech that is familiar with aligning vehicles with camber bolts and adjustable control arms. An off-road shop or shop with a good tech will be able to align it into spec pretty easy. A lot of alignment techs are used to working on vehicles that don't have adjustable parts. On top of that if the look up how to align a Pilot it will tell them there aren't any stock adjustable parts.
@@GotterAdventure I do have adjustable control arms for the rear installed, not sure what you meant about chamber bolts in the front though. But I will seek to get the car aligned by an offroad shop. thanks for your advise.
@@GotterAdventure Thank you for your recommendation after searching the web I found the Cam bolts you were referring to. I had thought I already had them installed but however upon my investigation in 20 degrees I was able identify that the bolts were infact stock bolts with no adjustments. why oh why Honda!? Anyways thanks again for your recommendation!
As soon as I saw him use a multi bit driver as a punch/pry bar, I was done.
Lol, I am assuming you are talking about me using a flat head screw driver to loosen the stake on the axle nut.
Also another thing ive been hearing in the videos is a bad wheel bearing noise
My tires are worn and are pretty loud. Especially the one I took off in this vid. I am sure that is the noise you hear. Either way I have replaced them before. This time I can make a video :)
Hello. Great job. Thanks. I would suggest you to use gloves next time
I keep trying gloves, but I guess I like the feel of the dirt, grease, cuts and bruises. LOL
Yes gloves are a pain they always rip and you get greasy anyway
Napa parts # pleassss good video
You need a Milwaukee 1/2 inch impact. Better then kobalt.
When I break my Kobalt I might splurge with the Milwaukee :)
my impact took the axle nut right off
Awesome! The right tool is everything
