    Some more info on 256-wide aspect ratio tweaking is in the main post: www.retrorgb.com/ossc-basics-intermediate-use.html
    I didn't include it here, because I didn't want to confuse anyone...and because 1080p5x won't work on everyone's displays. It's an awesome trick and worth reading about if you decide to use the custom profiles.

      Damn no profiles for the PS2 :(
      The other problem I have is the OSSC is displaying a black screen only (I've got sound). So no image, using an RGB scart adapter (so the tulip cables into the scart adapter).
      What can I do, I am out of ideas.

    Just wanted to thank you for this vid. I've had the OSSC for over a year but you covered some of my knowledge gaps and motivated me to grab an empty sd to update firmware and image the FBX settings on it. I was still adding some manually and it was such a pain. I think your vid will result in me using this device more often, and I'll point people with general questions about the device to watch too.

    Hey Bob. Perhaps you didn’t know but the OSSC supports 1600x1200/1920x1200 output for Line5X. This means you’ll get fullscreen support without cropping on a display if it supports higher than 1920x1080 resolutions. With optimized timings dialed it this gives a razor sharp image. I love to combine it with 100% normal scanlines. Looks insane on 240p content on my old LG C6 OLED. You do have to increase the backlight or OLED light on your display. Running these settings on my Sony W900 gives the best of both worlds. CRT motion with integer scaling.

    Thanks for this, it clarified something I didn't understand. I thought profiles that weren't customized were just considered blank, not generic, so I've totally avoided generic (unknowingly) up until now. I've always worked off of another profile when adjusting. I've been trying to tweak settings to get a good PS2 image, and FBX had said generic is the way to go. Now I actually know what that means and am excited to give it another go. I stuck with my Framemeister for PS2 as there aren't a ton of resolution switches on PS2 and it worked well.

    I've had the OSSC for about a week now and honestly love creating optimal timings (I use PAL hardware so their aren't already purpose built profiles out there). It's only a pain for the first day or so of trying to get your head round the concepts and then it's fairly easy to feel around and try different things.
    I don't have anything that can run test patterns but one thing I've found that helps get the h.samplerate and phase set is cranking the sharpness up on my monitor and to enable it's 'Super Resolution' (basically very strong sharpening). I then turn off the two LPFs in 'Video in proc' and 'sync opt.' This makes the noise very apparent and pretty easy to dial in to a clear image.

    Hey there, interested in getting into the OSSC but was wondering whether it's possible to add black bars to the top and bottom of the screen so games are pixel perfect on 1080p displays. I want to be able to play all my consoles at integer scales only and my monitor tends to fill the image out vertically no matter what. I'm totally fine with the image being smaller and in the middle of the display so long as it's integer if that makes sense. Is that something the OSSC does / can do??

  • @mindscan420

    Man, all this stuff is so complicated. It took me so long to figure out how to get GB Interface to show sharp pixels via my Carby Component. I tried numerous times in the past to dial in the recommended settings inside OSSC menus to no avail, but last night I actually went into the custom profiles site and put them in there, then loaded those settings, I finally got closer... there was still blur on parts of the screen and dialing in some additional settings finally got it fixed. There seems to be some other interference tho, tiny green pixels popping up around certain colors, but its way less noticeable. Plus the new UI on OSSC's latest firmware is such a game changer.

    Regarding Custom Profiles -> Improvement to the webpage -> I think the profiles numbers and import json should be closer to eachother so we can do this much faster. Or a lazy solution would be maybe a scroll-to-import-button near the numbers and a scroll-to-numbers close to the import json button.

  • @SkyScourgeGod
    @SkyScourgeGod 4 роки тому

    I've been a proud owner of an OSSC since spring of this year, but even I need to yield to the fact that it's time consuming and not at all easy to customize video settings on it. I've spent hours tinkering with settings on the online profile editor the first few days after I got my OSSC and it's even more time consuming when you throw a Koryuu into the mix because most people haven't documented any good setting to use with S-Video. Not that I blame them though, using S-Video on the OSSC is a pretty niche choice since it requires a transcoder like the Koryuu to even be compatible. I just happen to be one of those few people who prefer to not use scart cables since they add another level of complexity.
    I have to honest, when it comes to 480i I actually prefer the OSSC to just pass it through as an analog to digital conversion only. Bob-deinterlacing is really distracting with the "bobing" motions and often makes menus look weird. Not knocking the OSSC, just a personal preference. I have a Crestron HD scaler partnered to my OSSC since my TV's don't treat certain OSSC modes too well and its really great at deinterlacing 480i. I don't have hard numbers to show, but the input lag feels very minimal so long as the signal is digital and not analog. My TV's are pretty good for being flatscreens so not much latency is added from them either.

  • @tehFoxx0rz

    Hey, so, with 256 mode, you say the aspect ratio can't be changed. But, there's the "256x240 aspect" option under Output Opt., which I've been setting to 4:3, rather than 8:7, and then it looks much more correct, and not just "square" like your example.
    Is this somehow different to what you're talking about? I wouldn't want to presume you missed an option, but it seemed like a strange omission as my own experiences go.

    • @lschannel8
      @lschannel8 4 роки тому

      Likewise I'd like clarification on this. I set my line 4x optimized aspect ratio to 4:3 vs 8:7 for 256 Genesis games and it seems fine

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  4 роки тому +2

      You're correct, however the aspect ratio only looks correct in 4x and 5x modes and even then it's still a hair too wide. I didn't discuss it in the video since I didn't want to confuse things, but yeah, give this a try.

    • @tehFoxx0rz
      @tehFoxx0rz 4 роки тому

      @@RetroRGB Certainly for just playing, it can be a preference thing for sure; I recognise that the 4:3 setting might not be completely accurate, but yeah myself at least I find it closer, or at least a worthwhile compromise to still get those crisp pixels. Also, as a PAL gamer, our 256-wide games were squished wider anyway, so perhaps it looks less off to me than to you, even in 5x mode haha.
      Makes sense you didn't want to confuse things, though. Thanks for the great and clear video once again.

    I'm having problems with my 1.6 OSSC, I did the firmware update and have succesfully created profiles for my SNES and Wii, but I can only get a black and white output. I'm using RCA output for both consoles, I have my yellow cable plugged on the green input on the back of the OSSC and the white and red cables connected to a 3.5mm jack converter.... Any idea on why it's only outputting black and white?.... And how I may get color?

    Great vid, I don’t own a pc or laptop, can I still get good use out the ossc by not owning a computer?

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  10 місяців тому

      Sure, you can use it as-is and it's great. You can even use the remote to dial in the custom profiles. It'll take a bit longer than with a PC, but you can save when you're done and it'll be exactly the same.

    Really stupid question, but do you have a link to the adapter for the sound you used in the beginning of the video?

    Last question, you know when you move fast in side scrollers you get that nasty blurring/ghosting effect, how is that on this TV please? You don't need to turn BFI on right?

    Many Xbox games that run at 480p have very thin black pillar box bars baked into the signal. If I'm going for the aspect ratio I'd see on a 4:3 CRT, do I set timings so the image itself is stretched to 4:3 and thus cutting off the black bars, or resize everything including the black bars to 4:3?

    Hello my friend, your vídeo and the way that you explain are so great! Thank you so much! I have one doubt, I’ve imported the settings for N64, and other settings that I got in youtube, but in general the image turn so sharped and in my HDTV is not working so good. I would like to set a image less sharped. Could you please help me where topi exactly I need to change?

    Hi! Thanks for the video. Just a small question, if a have a console connected ussing svideo or vga, the rca cables for the sound will be connected to the ossc or directly to the monitor? Thanks in advance!

      @RetroRGB  3 роки тому

      It doesn't matter - The OSSC doesn't add any lag, so you don't need to worry about audio sync. Good question though!

    Question, so my ossc has my genesis and my ps1 going in from scart. It's display shows like 525i or 256i as the signal its receiving. And the only signal that will work on my TV seems to be line 2x which always shows up on my TV as 480p. My TV is a 1080p compatible TV I dont understand why line 3x which should be 720 never shows up. I also don't see any deonterlacong settings, the only setting that comes up is the LPF and what line multiplier I want to use

    On saturn the pixels look like they are shaking is there a fix for that? Sonic jam menus shake but actual game is fine.

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  2 роки тому

      The shaking is most likely deinterlacing: My guess is the Sonic Jam menu is 480i and the games themselves are 240p. The only retro gaming scalers that offer better deinterlacing options are the GBS-Control and RetroTINK 5x. If the only time you run into this is menu's, I'd stay with your OSSC. If you play a lot of 480i games, search this channel and retrorgb.com for info on both the other scalers.

    Thank you for this video. I'm sorry, but I'm apparently too stupid to recognize the difference. What exactly is the difference with the Circle Shaped Loop in Sonic 1? Just the different ratio or should there be something else to recognize? 🧐

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  11 місяців тому +1

      Just a different aspect ratio. It's been a debate between us retro nerds for years and honestly doesn't matter...as long as you don't stretch the full game to 16:9 :)

    There's a 240p test suite for the ps1 lurking on GitHub somewhere. I loaded onto my psio but I've heard that people have also burned it to cd. It's not on the main 240p site for some reason.

    How do you get pictures from a Super famicom NTSC Jap ? I see well with ossc 1.6 and avermedia plus2, but I register a black screen. Are you using an add-in card between the SFC and ossc ?
    If I use a SNES PAL I can see well and I can record without problems.
    Do you know the SFC has an RGB video signal with Macrovision ?? or nuisance signal? What prevents registration?
    Thanks for your valuable videos.

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  2 роки тому +1

      SFC + OSSC works fine. Does your capture card accept both NTSC and PAL signals? Also, have you tested the SFC on other displays or scalers? Maybe try setting the output resolution to 2x (480p) just to test?

    • @RetroGamesMania
      @RetroGamesMania 2 роки тому

      @@RetroRGB I have done several tests, but I read that super famicom, has a nervous sync and therefore they recommend installing a card in it, which stabilizes the synchronism signal. This card is called De Jitter . For now I’ll just try to capture it in another way, switching to analog with a FireWire Canopus, but it’s just a temporary solution .

    Thanks for this! When you upload the custom profiles to the OSSC, can you remove the SD card and still have the profiles on the OSSC, or do you need to keep the SD card inside to use those custom profiles?

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  3 роки тому +1

      I think you can take it out, as it should save on the OSSC itself. I always leave mine in though, so I could be wrong.
