they never would because it would go completely against how the government is trying to breed mindless sheep to be slaves to their machine. They don't want leaders or thinkers they want someone who will never question their power.
They definitely do. Unfortunately in America... the government is doing its best to stop independent thought and people of great character. This won't even happen. We plan to homeschool and teach our kids about great thinkers of time.
The aren't his teachings. . .they are th etachings of Zenu and the stoic philosophies, of which MA was a simple student. He was also quite a hypocrite and didn't well follow the teachings of stoicism. And opium-afddicted ruler who allowed and pursued much, much death an dpersucutions.
A beautiful quote! This is why the philosophical organization in Los Angeles that I joined at age 17 never advertised. When asked why, I was told that those who could resonate with the material provided will find it by a synchronistic process akin to harmonic resignation. The masses, of course, would reject it. Therefore, advertising made no sense. The meditations of Marcus Aurelius, for this same reason, will never be appreciated by those in power in Washington, in London, at the UN, at the Council of Foreign Relations, the IMF, the World Bank, the WHO or the UN.
Marcus Aurelius is one of the few leaders since the dawn of time to be bestowed with a title during his lifetime that then transcended the ages, rather than assigned it posthumously. That title? 'The Philosopher King'
I feel the world is in desperate need of a leader with the dignified principles of the great Marcus Aurelius. I've only started learning about him recently, what a man he was. How I wish I lived in a time where we had leaders of such virtue.
That's because you don't see MA for wha he was. The aren't his teachings. . .they are the teachings of Zenu and the stoic philosophies, of which MA was a simple student. Great video, love Stoicism and Ryan Holiday's efforts to introduce it to the world. Small edit on audio...at 4:15, Ryan uttered Unfailing selfishness, rather than selflessness.
You always wonder what these people would think of the future but this is my belief. If someone was told his books would help people for almost 2,000 years so far, being remembered as probably the greatest leader to ever exist and also having a bronze statue that person would feel rightfully excited and maybe even emotional. But Marcus Aurelius? I truly believe he would not give a damn about any of that but rather the fact his words help people and his memory shaped the world. He would care about the impact of his morals and beleifs rather than being remembered and having his name attached. And THAT is what makes him f***ng… PHENOMENAL of a human being…
It should be mentioned Hadrian also insisted Antoninus adopt Lucius Verus and when the Senate to confirm MA as Emperor he insisted Lucius Verus be Co Emperor as per Hadrian's wishes much to the surprise of the Senate. His sense of duty outweighed any desire for sole power, a shock to all. By the way he wasn't the only good Emperor and listing Vespasian with Caligula and 'other monsters' is a bit unfair. Excuse my slight corrections, I really enjoy your videos :)
Apparently, Pax Romana included five ampers, which is to say, five previous emperors. So, you definitely are right in bringing up this point. And certainly Hadrian and Vespaceian would be two others.
I would recommend the Loeb Classical Library translation. It has the original Koine Greek on the left, and the English translations on the right. I like their translations. Ryan, why would you include Lady Di in your video list? She probably epitomizes love for publicity,self-importance and wealth, more than anything (her ostentatious publicity stunts notwithstanding). Or her loathing of duty and tradition? Probably only HM The Queen would embody Stoic value.

FWIW, britannica's site states this at their bio page of MA: "Marcus’s choice of his only surviving son as his successor has always been viewed as a tragic paradox. Commodus (reigned as sole emperor 180-192) turned out badly, though two things must be borne in mind: emperors are good and bad in the ancient sources according as they did or did not satisfy the senatorial governing class, and Commodus’s rapid calling off of the northern campaigns may well have been wiser than his father’s obsessive and costly expansionism. But those who criticize Marcus for ensuring the accession of Commodus are usually under the misapprehension that Marcus was reverting to crude dynasticism after a long and successful period of 'philosophic' succession by the best available man. This is historically untenable. Marcus had no choice in the matter: if he had not made Commodus his successor, he would have had to order him to be put to death."
