A beautiful quote! This is why the philosophical organization in Los Angeles that I joined at age 17 never advertised. When asked why, I was told that those who could resonate with the material provided will find it by a synchronistic process akin to harmonic resignation.
The masses, of course, would reject it. Therefore, advertising made no sense. The meditations of Marcus Aurelius, for this same reason, will never be appreciated by those in power in Washington, in London, at the UN, at the Council of Foreign Relations, the IMF, the World Bank, the WHO or the UN.

Marcus Aurelius is one of the few leaders since the dawn of time to be bestowed with a title during his lifetime that then transcended the ages, rather than assigned it posthumously.

It should be mentioned Hadrian also insisted Antoninus adopt Lucius Verus and when the Senate to confirm MA as Emperor he insisted Lucius Verus be Co Emperor as per Hadrian's wishes much to the surprise of the Senate. His sense of duty outweighed any desire for sole power, a shock to all. By the way he wasn't the only good Emperor and listing Vespasian with Caligula and 'other monsters' is a bit unfair. Excuse my slight corrections, I really enjoy your videos :)

FWIW, britannica's site states this at their bio page of MA: "Marcus’s choice of his only surviving son as his successor has always been viewed as a tragic paradox. Commodus (reigned as sole emperor 180-192) turned out badly, though two things must be borne in mind: emperors are good and bad in the ancient sources according as they did or did not satisfy the senatorial governing class, and Commodus’s rapid calling off of the northern campaigns may well have been wiser than his father’s obsessive and costly expansionism. But those who criticize Marcus for ensuring the accession of Commodus are usually under the misapprehension that Marcus was reverting to crude dynasticism after a long and successful period of 'philosophic' succession by the best available man. This is historically untenable. Marcus had no choice in the matter: if he had not made Commodus his successor, he would have had to order him to be put to death."
Also, Donald Robertson has a much longer (and very interesting) article on the subject of why Marcus appointed his son Commodus as his successor: donaldrobertson.name/2018/01/19/why-did-marcus-aurelius-allow-commodus-to-succeed-him/

🧐I've been thinking about that particular last bit quite a lot lately, that 'the people who come after you will be the same annoying people you know now'/'none of this matters because you'll be dead' part... And if that is truly the case - why bother being 'stoic'? Why not be a monster? Either way - if truly 'none of it matters', then *none*of*it*matters*.
    OR... DOES it matter?🤔

He sounds so wise in all of his decision s, except for making his son successor. I'm not thinking of fictional portrayals of his son, but historically noted that he wasn't a good choice... But I'm not perfect so I know it's shouldn't cast stones..... Just really wonder his reasoning behind choosing his son

In writing Commodus was destined to become a great emperor, he seemed to be a wise and good man, and his rule did start that way. Unfortunately it all went downhill and everyone was proved wrong

I'm just new to stoicism and I wanna learn more from it. And I've been thinking of which book should I read first. Any recommendations? Thank you.

‘Meditations’ by Marcus Aurelius, the man himself. I got it a few weeks ago, and it is excellent.

personally i went straight to "Meditations" which i can understand how someone could find a hard read but after first reading, i turned to page 1 and started again and have read atleast 3 if not 4 times now. as each read i feel like get more from it as-well as reminds me of some the details i may have forgot. i then read The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego is the enemy, which compliments, re-enforces / brings clarity to things you've read in "meditiations" and now i'm working through audio books / physical books as i try and learn more and more (hence im on this youtube clip :)) (hope that helps, just sharing how i got into it)

I think and live much like the stoics, and people remember Markus as a wise man,in this day and age people see me as unstable and a bit weird, but that matters none to me, I will continue being myself till I expire
