String lights make a great atmosphere out on back porches and decks, but plugging them in and pulling them out can become a hassle. I decided to fix this problem by removing an old sconce on our back deck and wiring the string lights straight into the house wiring. The best part is that now those lights are on a switch. Easy on. Easy off. My video shows how I strung up my lights as well as how I wired them in. I hope you enjoy and don't forget to consult a local electrician if you are in over your head! More details below...

Thanks for posting this video. Just got this idea and your video helped out a lot.
That’s great to hear! Thanks for watching and the comment. Good luck on your project!
Hello, just a suggestion. Do away with the extension cord. Start your string of lights at the connection point (sconce location). Cut the end off the string light and wire nut it just as you did the extension cord.
Great idea!
Came to say this. Although you’d have to splice a new male onto the lights if you wanted to use them elsewhere. 6 of this half a dozen of the other.
Exactly! @@georgen4077
If the hardwired connection will be exposed to rain or snow, be sure to add a drip loop.
Great tip! Mine is located under the eve and not exposed to the elements but others may need to consider this.
Can a person turn an indoor light sconce into an outdoor light sconce, by rewiring it?
Sure! You just have to have the correct wiring and light to withstand the elements. I hope I answered your question (I’m not a licensed electrician)
Thanks for this video! Hey im doing the same thing but have a question. My string lights only have a white and black cord with no ground, can i still use a grounded extension cord to hard wire into the porch light? Or could i use a cord wothout a ground cable? Thanks!
Great question! I would wire in a grounded extension cord so it’s safe then plug your lights into the extension cord. Hope that makes sense. Obviously I’m not a professional electrician so keep that in mind. Thanks for the comment!
Where did u get the cover
