- For someone as "in love" with the 1911 as I am, the question gets asked often, "What was your first 1911? Well, in today's video, I go through THE gun that started my obsession with 1911 pistols, eventually leading to my job with the custom 1911 maker, Alchemy Custom Weaponry.
To many Colt collectors, the 1980s are not always the guns first sought out, but for 21-year-old me, I thought there was nothing better.

I just found your channel because you were a hilarious guest on 1911 Syndicate. You MADE that episode! So far the videos on your channel seem more serious, and with an absolute passion for the 1911 that can’t be faked. I live the long form, so keep it up.
BTW my first introduction to the 1911 was in 1983 with a NIB Govt. Colt under the Christmas tree. No other boxes have ever been so beautiful in the pre-dawn glow of tree lights! It was for my dad, but I shot it more than he did over the years. I was 13, and between old Jeff Cooper articles, WWII movies, and Magnum PI every Thursday, the 1911 left a very permanent mark on me. I can see your passion and I’m very happy for where you’re at for only 25yrs old. Keep living the dream, and share it with us.
I bought a stainless steel Colt in the early nineties. It was a time when everyone was modding their 1911’s. So mine got a McCormick trigger and a bunch of Wilson Combat parts. Everything I did was drop in parts so the frame was never cut or modified. I still have all of the original Colt parts in the original box. It is a great shooting gun. I’ve been very pleased to have it.
I have a cherry 1970 Series 70 (first year) and have been mulling over whether to have it modded. This video helped me make up my mind to leave it alone. It's just too cool as is. Thanks, Eli.

Great stuff Eli. I have a 1985 Gold Cup Nation Match series 80 . I still have that original box as well. I bought it new in 85 , brings back some memories.
Couldn't agree more with you about the letter. Certain firearms have a special aura to them. Small touches like that just add to it. Hope you keep the story telling format. It's refreshing to have something different on UA-cam.

No need to apologize for the long format. There are other platforms and other content creators that can scratch the adhd itch. Everything you said, I feel like it was just hearing the thoughts in my head come out the mouth of another. 1) When how something was packaged and presented was a signifier of the quality instead of an afterthought or a misleading distraction. 2) The journey to save up for something that is worth it. 3) An icon of America. 4) The concessions you make to carry an "unconventional" sidearm in the 21rst century. 5) Feeling like you stumbled upon the greatest gun on the planet when you get your first 1911. 6) Considered going as entry level as possible just to get into the 1911 platform, but realizing that within the community, there's a demand to do more [more money, more maintenance, more to worry about, but more worth it in the end]. 7) The interest in the history, as well as the stories that are told to tie it all together. 8) Wanting to keep the gun as stock as opposed to modifying it, even if the original guts of the gun could be improved upon. I got my first 1911 from Cleveland Armory for 1300. Had some scratches, but I wanted to be able to trust the used firearms market again after getting burned at a gun show. I did extensive research from forums and from UA-cam, and I talked to so many workers, friends, and mentors about their perspectives. I learned a shit-ton along the way, and I know there's still so much to be uncovered, but it's all been rewarding. I'm proud to be an official part of the 1911 community, albeit a novice, and I have you in part to thank for that. So stick to your guns and continue to stick up for what resonates with you. It's good to listen to others and be introspective, but it's also sexy to have the bravado to just say "fuck it, I'll die on that hill."
I love the story of getting guns. I have a 1945 produced Jungle Carbine that was used during the conflict in Malaysia. And I love the idea of that gun somehow ending up at a FLL in seaford, New York that I was able to snag. If guns could talk
Of course! I think there is more to guns than just these lame spec-sheet reading reviews on UA-cam. A lot of what connects us to these firearms are the stories that go along with them.
@@1776_duck my first 1911 was a modified Springfield armory GI that came with the original box, catalog and catalog order sheet that I still have. I love that stuff.

That is a great looking Mark IV. My first 1911 was also a Colt; a matte finished 1991A1 from the early 1990s. While not always the best looking or best finished or fitted 1911s, in my experience Colts seem to be extremely reliable with many forms of .45 ammo. If it's not Colt, it's a copy!
It's when colt cared about guns and cared about the customer and understood what the guns could be used for. Now today most gun manufacturers and people working the line building guns don't care and if it's out of spec they don't care. They might as well be building light bulbs. Colt meant quality and was great at one time. I have 3 Colts and they have all needed professional help to make the right.
I am blessed that all of my Colts have been good from the start, but professional help was brought in to help make them better. I agree with you 100%, though!
I bought several colt. 1911 45s in the 80s. They all had to go to a gunsmith to work right.
Colt's quality didn't get worst, everybody else got better. If you look at machining and finishing of Colts from back then, they were terrible and are still terrible today.
I’ve been buying bone stock Colts since around 2006 and they’ve all run just fine through thousands of rounds. I just picked up a Colt 1911C (5” Series 70) & it’s excellent! I’ve been shooting it monthly @ matches & it hasn’t bobbled yet.

Thanks for the story time...1911 is an awesome pistol, a classic weapon designed by Thor's right hand - John Moses Browning. The model name also gives one a number of 1911's to aim for while collecting...1911...

I get your 1911 excitement. Love the pistol. Have had only one in my life. A Thompson Auto Ordnance 2 tone. Did not last long in my armory. Lately I have fallen down the Sig P320 rabbit hole. I have one FCU and so many grips and barrels that my wife has begun calling it my lego set. I think more of a lincoln log set.

Excellent video! My first 1911 was a colt gold cup national match (I don’t count my prior dan Wesson) . I know you’ve had some custom work from nighthawk and such if I’m remembering correctly. If I wanted to get some custom work like trigger, front strap checkering, tighter fit, do you have a recommended company? Thanks!
That 1911 is in beautiful condition! My first 1911 had all the finish worn off from holstering, carrying, shooting, bumping into things at work, dirt, etc.

Great video!! I just recently picked up a1984 MK-IV 80 officers 3.5" . It has a similar collet bushing however with a lock notch under the dust cover. Dual spring setup. Haven't fired it yet. What grn ammo would you recommend for my gun. I feld stripped it & lubed it.
