  • In this video I show you the Camshaft & Crankshaft Timming Marks on a Kohler Command Engine. The engine in the video is a 12.5 HP but the same procedure will apply to many other Kohler engines.

    I have this exact engine on a 36" Snapper walk behind mower. Wasn't sure how to line the balance shaft back up with the crankshaft after disassembly. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

    Thank you! Glad I checked. I had the balance shaft off by one gear - I didn't realize that it had marks on it after I accidentally removed it. All lined up. Thanks Dony!

      If you dont know how to command an engine without marks,,, be very careful.The advise is valid to some car mechanics too.
      IF it gts wrong you have to call someone, and pay.

    I have a Kohler Command Pro 224cc single cylinder where the camshaft gear is marked however there's nothing marked on the crankshaft gear. When I removed the crank case cover, the cam shaft came with the side cover. So I have no reference whatsoever. I can always remover the rocker cover to get the valve timing close however I still risk being a tooth out. Any suggestions? My eyes aren't what they used to be ... had the wife come and take a look and she picked up the faint mark I was looking for.

    Hey dony, you're the man! I noticed what looks like the magnet/stator(?) on the crankshaft, which obviously turns at the same speed. Does this mean that spark is generated every time the piston reaches the top of it's stroke? ie between exhaust and intake stroke.
    Thanks.

    I have a Kohler Command 17.5 that backfires trying to start, I checked the flywheel key and it was okay. Before this it was hard starting and sometimes backfired. It would run until warmed up in a low throttle position. Timing seems to be the problem. Ideas welcome.

  • @donnowhy1
    @donnowhy1 2 роки тому

    Like the wannabe wallaby I have a question about the ignition timing. Should the magnet on the outside of the flywheel line up with the ignition coil roughly at piston top dead centre? I realize the spark should occur a few degrees before TDC but I have a Kohler Courage engine on which the magnet seems to line up with the coil at roughly Bottom Dead Centre. I am about to remove the valve cover to check the valve timing. Wondering if my engine has timing gear problems. I bought the mower not running so I'm working my way through the problems.

    I just had one of those apart. I had to change that "nylon" governor gear (farthest right in the video) It tore all the teeth off and while cutting grass the engine revved to the moon. First time I've seen that happen on one.

    This was very informative but it hasn't helped me any. I have a Kohler CV13S. I noticed your timing marks (on the crank) are about 200 degrees apart (clockwise). Mine are 180 apart so all of the marks won't match at the same time. There is no problem matching up the balance shaft, the problem is with the camshaft. It will either be right or 180 degrees out. I'm looking for suggestions before I close up the case and try it out. I believe if I put the piston all the way in (TDC presumably) and then install the camshaft with the lobes out of the way so both valves are closed I should be good. Any comments will be appreciated.

    Also, if you're going to crack the case bottom like this, make sure to inspect the plastic governor gear. Even if it looks good, check the oil sump screen. If there are small yellow strands of plastic in the screen, replace the governor gear, very easy to do. The oil and small metal particles will wear the plastic governor gear, causing it to spin faster which spins off the metal weights. I found mine in my sump with an out of control free revving engine. Nice video Dony.

    What's worse, it's possible to misadjust the external governor arm enough that the metal cap falls right off the shaft, causing the same over-revving, which I discovered can also cause the exhaust valve to not retract quickly enough, hit the piston and get bent. I know OHV engines have better compression, but those old K series Kohlers were much more bulletproof than this.

    Don what exactly does the balance shaft do? Does it eliminate some vibration to try to make it run smoother and the other plastic round shaft is that the governor?

    • @MrBlowmyselfup
      @MrBlowmyselfup 6 років тому +1

      Balance shaft counteracts the motion of the piston making the engine run smoother. The other small plastic one is the governor gear

    I am right at the point of reassembly of a Kohler CV15S. I know of the 2 marks on the crankshaft. While turning the crank I noticed that the balance shaft will match twice, but the cam shaft will be out 180*. How do you know if you are on the correct position of the stroke? On the exhaust or on the intake stroke? Please send a reply. I am waiting to get this thing back together.
