  • How we got completely overwhelmed by nature on the Isle of Mull, Scotland.
    We set off on a planned 10-day bikepacking trip to explore the island off the west coast of Scotland.
    It was truly one of those special places that you don't forget. The landscapes and wildlife just blew us away. At the same time, we had a pretty big hiccup that we're still feeling the effects.
    Overwhelmed by nature, for better and for worse...
    I hope you enjoy the video. It's one we really worked hard on because Mull was such a unique and dynamic island that really made an impression on us. I hope the video does it justice.
    Part two will be coming soon!

    Always stopping to look, to listen, to touch, to smell the earth, the sea….. This is why we, as a couple, also don’t cycle with other people. It is all about the journey. 🚴‍♀️😊

    So so beautiful really enjoy all your videos. As for ticks we’ve always used raw apple cider vinegar with water in a spray bottle, once it drys out no smell and works wonders on us and dogs. Also skin so soft from Avon seems to work for mosquitoes !

    I can assure you there will be tics in the campsites too. I used Salen as my base and the first morning I woke to several deer grazing. They were about the site morning and evening and where there’s deer there’s tics.
    I just love Mull and the islanders are so nice. Unlike you my weather was over 25° every day for the five days I was there. I just couldn’t get enough of the island and covered every road a poo art from two and sone tracks. I rode from early morning to late at night.
    I’d happily stay there.
    Had hoped to be back in June but that went tits up:(

    • @joshandsarahride
      @joshandsarahride  11 місяців тому

      We were pretty surprised with how many there were. Or, how many there were in well-trodden areas. I think the area we picked up lots must have been a deer sit cos it was heaving.
      We also found everyone on the island incredibly nice (and always seem to on our Scottish trips). Glad you got some consistent weather! We went just as all the UK weather broke. The rain had it's charms but I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish for some more sunshine 😅
      Have you ridden many of the other islands?

      @@joshandsarahride like you I’ve done Arran and not an Island but Kintyre is as good as it’s lovely with great roads and tracks. It’s then easy to get to Gigha which although tiny is beautiful and nice to spend a day or two on. Quite a few things to see. I’m hoping to do from here Arran, over Kintyre to Gigha soon it’s only a ride of about 30 miles from my door but a world away.
      Skye I went to last year and returned as firstly the east side was like a race track it used to be so quiet before the bridge. Also the weather was horrendous you couldn’t stay upright to I returned to the centre of Scotland for decent weather but that actually worked out really well. Had hoped to do some small islands this year but unfortunately the other half has terminal cancer and it’s been hard to get away.
      Wanted to get to Jura and Islay where the tics are mental this year I’m informed. I think Facebook needs a tic imoji.

      @@SwampyDuckRidesAgain3636 Ahh, I'm really sorry to hear about your other half. Do you live in Arran? Such a beautiful place and I love the boat travel too. We've heard lots of good things about Jura and Islay, also the concentration of distilleries! We're planning that ride potentially late summer. Can grab a brew if we pass nearby you?

    The blasted Midges and even worst the ticks, I'm so sorry they have spoilt your trip, this is why I don't travel to the west coast of Scotland between the end of April and October, but even then you have to be vigilant for ticks, which you both were prepared for (so many are not) I wear gaiters which are sprayed daily on walks with anti tick spray (best from Boots the chemists) and douse myself in Mosquito / Insect spray, not nice but necesssary. I do hope this has not put you off Scotland. All such mountainous, sea warm temperate climates around the world habour such critters. ATB Big Dave Scotland
    PS great video as usual, please keep them coming.

      @joshandsarahride  11 місяців тому +1

      Definitely not spoiled the trip but a curve ball for sure! Think we'll be a lot more vigilant going ahead. Certainly not put us off Scotland. Already planning our next venture. Particularly as Sarah has just found out her Grandad was Scottish, which wasn't known before! Do you have the same in central/eastern Scotland through the summer?

    • @GOBBYBOY333
      @GOBBYBOY333 11 місяців тому

      Hi Josh and Sarah, I'm pleased you havent been put off, frankly your experience would put me off. I as I think you know live in the Borders region just over the border in scotland (only by 500 metres) I grew up and spent my first 50 years as a man of kent, but chosse to come and live up here. In my nearly 20 years living in the region, I have never had a tick attach, my son did whilst climbing local crags, our dog and cat get them as we live ruraly. We don't get midges over here, but on hot evening is the summer we get flies, but you get them everywhere. There are some great coastal an inland cycling routes in the region; however, where you live currently and the west coast is very hard to beat. I have been told the the west side of southern Scotland is very cycling friendly, but have yet to have found the time to explore Dumfries and Galloway. Lets face it a young couple like you have the whole world to explore once the issue you mention now and then is resolved. What ever happens it would be lovely if you keep taking us along on your adventures. Regards Dave

      @@GOBBYBOY333 glad to hear you've been tick-free. Let's hope it stays that way!
      The western regions of Scotland we've cycled so far have been very cycle-friendly, so long as you avoid the busier roads. Made the mistake of taking the busy road through Loch Lomond and won't repeat that 😅
      Off to explore the Western Lakes this weekend which we're looking forward to 👌
