Tywin (without his father's permission) not only exterminated their family lines, but destroyed their castles with the survivors inside (including flooding the Rayne's mines.) The song was composed as an abject warning that "A Lannister always pays his debts" goes both ways.
What's absolutely brilliant about the Red Wedding is that it totally makes sense and many hints throughout the episodes point to this ending YET you don't expect it.
Yeah there is a lot of foreshadowing and "hints" , but no one watching a TV show is expecting them to kill off 3 main characters (who basically make up 1/5th of the overall story being told) in one episode in under 15 minutes. Like even with Ned it was just 1 character.
Believe it or not, the Red Wedding is even a bit more horrifying in the books. When Cat sees Robb die, she basically loses her mind from grief and starts scratching her face so furiously that she completely tears it full of wounds with her fingernails. The Frey men are told to cut her throat as "She's gone crazy". It's all told from her POV, so reading her inner monologue as she loses her mind is disturbing as hell, as to her, her own fingers are birds pecking at her face.
To add to this, her body is later found thrown in a river by the Brotherhood Without Banners and I believe Thoros gives his life to bring her back to life but as a mangled corpse who's lost any trace of sympathy or kindness Catelyn had. She becomes the leader of the Brotherhood and they go around hanging anyone associated with the Lannisters, Freys or Boltons, even if just marginally associated. I read this chapter years ago before the show on my deck on a beautiful sunny day. I got to this part - I read it and threw my book across my deck. i sat down for a few minutes in absolute shock. I made myself get up and picked up the book again and reread those last moments thinking no no no I have misinterpreted what had occurred. It was a masterpiece of writing. the entire last leg of their journey to the Freys it was raining and miserable and Catelyn kept remarking walder frey was not going to like them being late due to the inclement weather. when they finally arrived Grey Wind kept growling and nipping at the soldiers greeting them to the point where they insisted Robb let them cage him while there. Catelyn Stark raised her hands and watched the blood run down her long fingers, over her wrists, beneath the sleeves of her gown. Slow red worms crawled along her arms and under her clothes. It tickles. That made her laugh until she screamed. “Mad,” someone said, “she’s lost her wits,” and someone else said, “Make an end,” and a hand grabbed her scalp just as she’d done with Jinglebell, and she thought, No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair. Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold.- Catelyn Stark” The show did a magnificent job on this scene. it captured the feeling well. 4:50 That's actually based on a real world historical custom of guest right. An offering of bread and salt symbolizes that the people arriving are officially welcomed as guests, and any potential bad blood between the guests and host will be buried for the duration of the visit. Sadly, it turns out Walder Frey is a dishonorable shit with no respect for guest right.
I watched this episode 2 years ago ( i started got in 2018) and it broke me. Robb was my fav character, definitly the character's death that broke me the most in tv history
Miya, your reaction was beautiful: true, pure, full of denial and grief. Exactly the way it should be. After this episode you need time to recover. Take that time. And with that time comes your appreciation for the masterful storytelling of the first three seasons of GoT. Your tears will dry and you will be ready for ep. 310 and after that Season 4. Enjoy!
"No, not my hair, don't cut my hair. Ned loves my hair" Truly one of the hardest scenes on television. Don't worry about being a mess, close friends just got murdered. Grieve and look to the future. Arya doesn't get over it either.
Miya: Now I'm going to go watch reactions of people reacting to this episode. Everyone: Welcome to the club. That's what brought us all here... all these years later. 😭
The episode's name is Rains of Castamere.. the story of Rains of Castamere was what Cersei was explaining to Margery in previous episode when she called Cersei sister.. the song that played (when they closed the door and Cat felt something's wrong) was the Lannister song also known as Rains of Castamere.. this song was played several times since season 2.. end theme of battle of blackwater episode, the song played while Cersei said the story of Rains of Castamere to Margery.. Cat knew Lannister song.. that's why she became suspicious..
I’m usually so excited to see people react to this scene but this just broke my heart.😩 Don’t worry about how you look sweet girl...we were all you when we saw it for the first time.💖
It was already decided in advance who Edmure would marry, even before he accepted the arrangement. Frey's sons told him he would be marrying Roslin who is 19 years old. Edmure asked to see her first, but this was denied.
Been waiting for this one! Bran and Rickon make me tear up, but Catelyn's performance is incredible. To answer your question from the beginning of the video, the knife Sam has is made of dragonglass.
This is the episode that actually sparked review/reaction channels, because us book readers knew it was coming and managed to keep it under wraps while filming the reactions of those who didn't know.
@@MariaCJ I don't know why people say that. Let's plays were already doing it with videogames years earlier. But as they say: videogames are the future.
You're no longer a Sweet Summer Child, but a Woman of Winter now Miya. I was equally anticipating and dreading this episode, because I know how much you loved Robb. It's such a good but devastating episode. The infamous Red Wedding. It's okay to need some time to process it, don't worry it's such a heavy episode. As for why Catelyn looked so worried...remember the last episode, when Cersei asked if Margaery knew the song: The Rains of Castamere? Margaery said she did, and they regularly play it in King's Landing. Cersei told Margaery the backstory of that song. About what happened to House Reyne, whom the song is regarding. House Reyne was wiped out by Tywin, for rebelling against them. You'll see in the subtitles this episode, when the music starts playing and Catelyn is looking worried, the subtitles say the song is called: "The Rains of Castamere." Catelyn knows that song, it's a well known Lannister song, and she knows what it symbolizes. That's why she was worried. And when Catelyn peeked underneath Roose Bolton's clothes, he was wearing battle armor, which yeah...why would he be wearing that at a wedding? That's why she slapped him, because she knew he betrayed them.
"What do you take me for?" Aww, Miya! *Big hugs* We've all been there, if it helps. I was SO devastated after and thought I wouldn't watch the show anymore either. Welcome to the GoT Support Group!
So many shows are propped up by parental security blanket characters who act as pillars for vulnerable characters serving to alleviate any fear or uncertainty you may have. George is such a mastermind at removing these pillars in a spectacular & shocking way e.g Robert, Ned, Jorah, Catelyn & even Robb in the end to create a real feeling of chaos and uncertainty within his world
I feel bad for Ygritte, honestly. When Jon starts fighting the wildlings - her wildlings, her people - she actually tries to join in on HIS side. She's willing to throw away everything she knows for him. And then he just rides off and leaves her there, alone. I'd be mad at him too. Also holy.... I forgot how painful the red wedding is lol. You feel the lost potential as each character in this show dies. All the futures that could have been. All the things they could have done.
If you've paid close attention to the dialogue this episode was foreshadowed 2 episodes ago when Jaime was speaking to Roose Bolton and Jaime said to give his regards to Robb Stark. And then again last episode when Cersei spoke about the Lannister army wiping out House Reyna. Now let’s talk about the mistakes Robb made as a leader and how it ultimately led to his demise. Robbs number one flaw was he didn’t align his people's interests with his own. He didn’t even trust his own men with battle plans. Your commanders need to know the strategy, not just the tactics. Robb told Edmure not to attack the mountain, but he didn’t tell him why. So when Edmure saw a chance, he did what he thought was right with the little to no information he was given and then he went off plan and recaptures the Stone Mill. Robbs plan was to draw the mountain into the west into his territory where he could capture and kill him. Now, Robb is a good strategist and that is a solid plan but not telling Edmure his overarching goal of not attacking was a major issue. The people in your organization, on your team, where you maybe must know why they have certain goals, otherwise, they can’t adapt to changing conditions. They can only do exactly what you’ve said. If you are a leader, you can’t expect to make every single decision. You need to delegate and you need to do that effectively so you can’t just tell people the tactics. You need to give them the strategy. You need to tell them the why. Then you’ve got the Karstarks. They want Jaime Lannister gone because he killed one of them in an escape attempt. Rickard Karstark demands his head and then Robb doesn’t give him Jaimes head which precipitates the revenge, which causes Robb to lose the karstarks. If he had told Richkard Karstark that Jaime would be tried at the end of the war and that Karstark could have his head, then, maybe, he could have taken that rage and put it in the right direction. He should have kept Richard Karstark alive since he controls a massive portion of Robbs army; keeping them loyal was essential. Last but not least The most laughable thing Robb did was marrying Talisa (betraying the Frey's) and then expecting the Frey's help. I think even Ned and Jon would be like brruuhh!
@@annabourdieu true Jaime was unaware of the massacre until he was enroute to kings landing but it was still a foreshadowing. It was a foreshadowing for viewers because just like Cersei telling that story to Margaery she was also unaware of the Starks being massacred. It was like little Easter eggs for viewers to catch
For real, Ned married Catelyn who he didn't know right after his brother died because of the alliance with House Tully and Jon just left Ygritte because he couldn't break his oath to the Watch. Ned and Jon put duty first.
It was specifically Tywin who had the Reynes wiped out. He had their gold mines sealed off and diverted nearby water into the castle, drowning everyone inside, women, children, everyone
Just a small correction: Rickard Karstark lost two sons to Jaime Lannister: one during the Battle of Whispering Wood, and the other when Jaime also strangled his own cousin to escape his cell.

Trust, you’re not an idiot. I know for sure I was right there with you when I first watched this episode. I was so excited for the wedding - I never imagined they would kill off Robb so I was just curious how he would work his way out of the mess he was in. I felt so naive after the episode ended. I just sobbed for like 10 minutes straight at how devastating it was. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I don’t watch your reactions to laugh at your thoughts and hopes for how the show will play out. I watch because it let’s me revisit how I experienced the show the first time I watched it, and because I find hearing someone else’s perspective refreshing and interesting.
When you rewatch the episode before this and hear Cersi explain what happen to the reins of castmere.... it hit different and then you realize when in this episode that song starts playing Cat knew then it was done.
This is my 3rd time watching your reaction to this since you dropped the video. I love this reaction so much. Probably one of my favorite red wedding reactions.
To me that scream was so horrifying that it was reminiscent of Florida Evans learning of the news that her husband James’ (James Amos) died in a car accident. “DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!
Didn't see it mentioned here, but Cat was looking concerned at the band after a Frey closed the doors because they were playing "The Reins of Castamere", the Lannister song. She slapped Roose Bolton because he showed her he was wearing armor, obviously something you don't wear to a wedding.
That song made Cat suspicious bc it is a song called Rains of Castamere, dedicated to Tywin's ruthlessness victory against his unruly vassals, the Reynes of Castamere. The castle Castamerw had mines underneath it and when Tywin's army arrived, thousands women and children hid in them. Tywin commanded to seal the exits but to let the rain fall through until all of them drowned. It has lyrics as well, you can look it up.
I've been waiting on this reaction. I knew you were going to take it hard. My whole world was shook after seeing it. Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold.- Catelyn Stark”
The show did a magnificent job on this scene. it captured the feeling well. Like watching a brilliant Greek tragedy unfold before your eyes.
I woke up my dad at 3 am because i couldn't stop the "No"s either. 🤣🤣
aaaaand here we are. the episode that started reaction videos as a whole. edit: the song playing that catelyn was perturbed by was "the rains of castamere," the story that cersei was talking about last episode. it's about how an ambitious house was slaughtered.
"I'm done!" - the mandatory words after watching 3.9!
JEEEZZZ , MY HEART CANNOT, GIVES ME CHILLS EVERYTIME 🥺😭😭
And the music does NOT help
This is the episode when everyone figured episode 9's were gonna be big!
Yea that’s what I’m expecting now
'If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention'.
I remember the first time I read that I threw the book and swore I would never read another page. Two weeks later I started back up.
You held out for two weeks? I didn't last three days before the curiosity to see what's next got too strong.
I screamed at the book at 3am. 🤣
"10 angry ravens" will stay with me for life.
I read the book, the red wedding hit me in the gut so hard hard.
The show came out, knew it was coming, still hit hard.
Am re-watching GOT after watching HOD, it still hit hard.
Am watching your react now, still hit's just as hard x.x
I get so sad to see how close Arya was to be back with her mother and brother. Im sobbing 😭😢
Right omgggg 🥺
I’ve gotten used to the red wedding after watching it so many times but your reaction to it broke me.😢❤️
Ive only watched it once because I just can’t 😩
😭😭
@@ayannabranchcomb7535 I read the books, so I knew what would happen in the show, but it still makes me tear up everytime I watch a reaction to it even after so many years😭
i finally understood why they played the rains of castermair,
if you know the story behind that song then you'd understand why cat started to get worried
I remember when u first posted S1 EP1, I was like "I cant wait till she gets to this EP 😭😭😭"
Lool ur evil
Nah 😂 but fr tho the contrast on the 1st episode to now is INSANE 😂 shit was all flowers princesses & fairytales
I feel so bad now lmao
One of the most famous episodes in TV history.
You are now no longer a child of summer. You are now a child of winter.
I remember literally sobbing at the end of this episode 😩 so I have total sympathy for you!
The saddest part is the guy who plays Robb took the train home stained by fake blood with tears of sadness because his character was killed off
I watched this episode 2 years ago ( i started got in 2018) and it broke me. Robb was my fav character, definitly the character's death that broke me the most in tv history
Living for Miya's devastation lmao 🤣 we love to see it
Lmaooo 😭😩
Miya, your reaction was beautiful: true, pure, full of denial and grief. Exactly the way it should be. After this episode you need time to recover. Take that time. And with that time comes your appreciation for the masterful storytelling of the first three seasons of GoT. Your tears will dry and you will be ready for ep. 310 and after that Season 4. Enjoy!
I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN OVER THIS..... EVER.
"No, not my hair, don't cut my hair. Ned loves my hair"
Truly one of the hardest scenes on television.
I’m usually so excited to see people react to this scene but this just broke my heart.😩
Don’t worry about how you look sweet girl...we were all you when we saw it for the first time.💖
It was already decided in advance who Edmure would marry, even before he accepted the arrangement. Frey's sons told him he would be marrying Roslin who is 19 years old. Edmure asked to see her first, but this was denied.
Yes Michelle was so good in that scene oh and the scream she let out ! Smh amazing acting. You just feel her pain
Totally. In the books she is so hysterical after Robb’s death she claws her own eyes out before getting her throat cut.
right?! i’m not even a mother, but i felt michelle’s perfomance of catelyn’s pain and heartbreak so much 😭
Shr Shoulda got the EMMY for that season !!!!
Been waiting for this one! Bran and Rickon make me tear up, but Catelyn's performance is incredible.
To answer your question from the beginning of the video, the knife Sam has is made of dragonglass.
and Deagonglass is Obsidion
Always gets chills when "the rains of catasmere" plays.
This is the episode that actually sparked review/reaction channels, because us book readers knew it was coming and managed to keep it under wraps while filming the reactions of those who didn't know.
Woow did it sparked reaction channels of all tv shows as a whole or just for GOT?
@@ey9619 as a whole
You'll see in the subtitles this episode, when the music starts playing and Catelyn is looking worried, the subtitles say the song is called: "The Rains of Castamere."
Catelyn knows that song, it's a well known Lannister song, and she knows what it symbolizes.
*Big hugs*
We've all been there, if it helps.
So exited to see your reaction ! 🥺
Just to clear that up, Jaime was not aware of the red wedding massacre when he sent his regards
We've all been there sis. Big hugs.
(S1-E2) Old Nan: "Oh my sweet summer child, what do you know about fear?"
Well done Miya, you are no longer a 'sweet summer child'. You have nothing to apologise for, you have everyones empathy with this episode. This one was brutal and the episode that really pulled the rug out from under everyones feet, definitively showing that this show is not like anything that's come before. If you're like me you'll be tiptoeing on eggshells over thin ice as your remaining faves storylines unfold, all I can say is... the Highs will be as intense as the Lows. Thank you for the reaction upload, I look forward to more. Enjoy the show and have a good evening.
Miya, it’s been three years since i first watched the series and im still not over this episode 🥺❤️ i don’t think you ever really do
this one STILL hurts every time i watch it 😢
ps. robb’s dire wolf grey wind sensed that something was wrong but couldn’t get to robb 💔😭
Hearing her beg her son to get up and walk out kills me. Her acting is absolutely superb in this scene.
Stick with it though seasons four and five are pretty good season 6 7 and 8 kind of go off the rails but you made it this far and I know you're not a quitter. Sending you an air hug for comfort. Love you Maya your reactions always make my day but I ain't going to lie I was sad to see you cry although what did I expect? If I couldn't get through it I know you couldn't. The saddest part was Aria was right there almost being able to reunite with at least some of her family that's just gut-wrenching to me. IN SOME CASES THERE WILL BE VINDICATION. JUST KNOW THAT. Keep watching so you can share at all of the stuff that happens to some of our main villains they're not just going to take our heroes away and leave the villains so you do definitely have to look forward to that and I believe season 4 is pretty good. I haven't watched it in a while so I watch your reactions to kind of serve as a second viewing I need to go ahead and join the patreon. I'll get to that. Right now I'm starting to ramble. However, I just wanted to show you some love because this was really a tough episode. You are not an ugly crier you are beautiful. I also wanted to tell you once again thank you for reaching back out to me on Instagram it meant a lot. You're my little sister in my head
Awwww i appreciate you so much 😭❤️❤️ and don’t worry I’ll definitely keep watching , i can’t give up now 😂

We were all shocked, even those who read the books. The whole series is a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows. Thank you for powering through this.
This episode is what caused the explosion in reaction channels being created because of people who knew about the red wedding and filmed their unsuspecting family/friends to post their reaction lol
🙌 This was the episode that shocked the World. It turned GoT into a huge international hit. Michelle delivered an incredible performance for sure. And you are NOT an ugly cryer. ;)
we've been waiting for this episode for a long time. Your reaction didn't disappoint
I have watched and re-watched this show 7 times now and this episode STILL shocks me like......why😭
"You're like, a wizard." Booyah! Sam always wanted to be a wizard.
Yep, twin castles guarding the big bridge.
Brutal murders aside, I love that slower GoT theme that plays when the Hound saves Arya.
Me too!
Oh my sweet summer child. You are adorable and compassionate and smart. I appreciate your feels. Great job on this.
Congratulations you are no longer a summer child, but a child of autumn now!
Miya, No words were needed...As always, your great and honest reaction said it all.
Yes the red wedding is always traumatizing you should check out the Lannister song that played that alerted Cat its called “Rains of Castamere” & it’s about the story Cersei told Margaery about what Tywin did to house Reyne
I love how you were able to laugh at yourself in the edits. That's real.
The scenes in this show are so shocking that after you watch it you just keep replaying it in your head. Just mind blown. I have to watch a funny show afterwards to stop thinking about it
@Michelle Luna Oh my god yes it’s like you were right there but you survive the whole thing and you were having Vietnam war flashbacks
Ah Miya don’t apologise for your reaction, that’s a tough episode! Wanted to pre-warn having tissues and some kind of cozy blanket near by but didn’t want to ruin it. The Starks have a tough time but keep watching, the shows fantastic honestly!
I feel so bad watching you watch this. It’s the only episode that still makes me cry every time. Neds death was hard but this was brutal.
I really wish they brought in the Lady stone heart character (book Caitlyn) because Michelle Farley would have been phenomenal. She should have won awards for this episode.
We all feel your pain, sweetie. I have never been more emotionally broken by any episode of any series. I was in the middle of binging the first five seasons when I first saw this episode. I was so angry I didn't watch another episode for several weeks.
I LOVE ARYA STARK. My favorite character.
And I still can't believe that Blackfish survived because he had to go pee.
If someone hadn't spoiled this episode for me my reaction would be like yours
It leaves you shook to your very bone marrow. This scene is honestly what made GoT what it was.
that was an upsetting episode. your reaction got me. i was trying so hard not to cry watching you cry like that when i didn't even cry while watching the episode for the first time.
The very phenomena of reaction-vids is because of this episode. Those who read the books filmed those who had not. It was popular.
But watch the rest-- it just gets better.
The doggy dying was sooo saddd 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 awwwwwwe miyassssss 💔
OFFICIALLY Welcome to Game of Thrones!
The north always remember 😤😤
Two saddest deaths in GoT were Lady and Grey Wind.
Hang in there Miya you got this I know that watching this show can be quite the emotional rollercoaster at times but yeah i really do enjoy watching your reactions im tuned in every week so yeah keep doing what ya doing your awesome
Rob, Talisa, Catelyn, the baby and the Stark army in one episode.
And grey wind
@@Jumaoli Yep :(
Heart breaking all around! :-( Don't worry, we were all ugly crying too
I watched it a hundred times and I cried again with you
You don't have to say anything, Miya, it's okay and please don't let anyone tell you not to get attached to anyone. People who say that just miss the point of why we watch and keep watching, although we know they are not "real", there's nothing strange when we mourn the death of those characters we like. I think the only thing you can do is watch another episode.
Warm regards from the Netherlands!
I REMEMBER ME AND MY MOM WATCHING THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WE WERE SPEECHLESS AND JUST SAT THERE FOR A LONG TIME SILENT AFTER THE EPISODE ENDED FOR A GOOD WHILE….IT WAS HARD TO WATCH….TRULY MAGNIFICENT ACTING FROM EVERYONE…
I will never not stop and watch reactions to this episode lol
Excelente!!! Great real reaction ever. What did you expect? if you play this game you win or you die. This show is legendary and insuperable . Bravoooo!!
You a such an enjoyable reactor. Love your editing as well. Provides a little levity and humor. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I just watched this for the first time recently without any spoilers and it traumatised me. I’ve seen some messed up shit in my life in movies and series but never have I seen anything like this. The suspense built up to the plot twist caught me off guard.
Your reaction was all of us ❤
the episode that started youtube reaction videos. welcome to the cold hard winter, woman.
There’s no words for this episodes sis 😩 the starks don’t deserve any of this
The North Remembers…
My roommate in college convinced me to start watching this show. One night i just started screaming from my bunk...she looks over at me and calmly asks "red wedding?" And i just start bawling 😭😭😭 i think she was patiently waiting to see how i would react.
Aaaaahh Miya Elizabeth. You finally made it to the Red Wedding. Is your heart officially ripped out. On the floor and stomped on by the Lannister's and the Bolton's. Walder Frey and the whole of Westeros.
Hang on tight it's gonna be a bumpy ride. I will never get over this episode
This is the episode that makes people watch GoT reactions. There are a couple of others, but THIS is the one.
