Don't let the turkeys get you down...heavens as others have mentioned there are folks who run tours to see the wildlife, as well as folk who just shoot them for fun. You are doing much to honour the local wildlife with your excellent videos, keep them coming. And I was delighted with your curious sea lions...what a wonderful encounter!

There are scuba diving tours that take people to dive with sea lions at Hornby regularly. And charge money for it. Don't give this Karen a second thought.

I guess the interaction with fisheries went ok but you have nothing to apologize in my opinion. They came to you, but you didnt try and chase them or hit them etc. Its a big ocean and there is lots of water and sealife in it. Keep doing what your doing we enjoy watching your vids.

So if Sealions show up you have to abandon plans, Sucks, never thought it was that strict. Seals are constantly popping up around us when fishing.

The point about hyperbole is well taken. That said 98% of your viewers aren't going to actually dive. The 2% that do are probably wise enough to know to not seek out marine mammal encounters. So I don't think any damage done there. At any rate thanks for sharing the experience. Seems like the DFO biologist was just doing his job. Glad he was a pro and you had a dialogue. At any rate looking forward to the next video!

I was snorkeling at whiterock five years ago. I got approached alone by a bull sea lion with zero visibility. He kept surfacing 10 feet away from me looking angrily at me. I was also 100 feet from the rocks and the dock. I didnt enjoy that moment at all.
Haha yeah they can be intimidating. Large wild animals trying to show you who's boss...not a fun situation to be in.

A very touchy and unique subject. I would say that scuba divers being under the water on air have more interactions than free divers because we don't have to spend that time going up and down to the surface back to the bottom for a breath of air. I mean look at hornby Island where you could go up there and do the sea lion dives where you're totally doing everything but more that was talked about in this video giving the sea lion a starfish so it can play with it. So you can get your photos or video of the sea lion watching the sea lion tug on your fin because it wants to play with you. Having the sea lion bite the top of your hood because it wants to come check you out and be social with you. I don't know if I necessarily agree with that official 100%, but I do agree to a certain percentage that people shouldn't go out of their way to harass marine life. But for people to video and photograph marine life and it's talk about what happened. That's a great way to educate those, especially those who will never be in the water.
Yeah man! Interactions are going to happen as sea lions are curious by nature. But I agree, going out of your way to dive with them seems irresponsible. I'll be honest, I used to be one of those "cull the sea lions!" type before I started freediving. Seeing them underwater profoundly changed my opinion. It's their ocean not ours. If people spent more time with them they'd begin to realize that too. Humans are the problem.

This guy is a great ambassador of our oceans and whoever reported him I feel doesn't understand what he's about I'm glad you didn't get fined he's bringing light to a lot of serious and important issues and I personally enjoy his content so maybe give him a break!!!!!

Thanks for organizing 30+ people to clean up Tsawwassen beach this summer! Seems like less microplastics in the sea lions environment and food isn't as exciting as unfairly reporting someone who promotes the conservation and beauty of our struggling ocean ecosystem.

Bro, interacting with nature, abd abusing it in a disrespectful or malicious mannar are totally different things. Plus, as you said, Sea Lions are huge! No one underwater would willfully do anything to agitate them, especially a bull.
So true. Sea lions are pretty intimidating. They literally would not leave us alone. They will be hard to us to avoid that's for sure.

What fishing license do you have to keep the amount of fish that you do each year in BC?

Just a regular tidal fishing license. You have daily limits, possession limits and Lingcod in some areas of annual limits. Daily limit is how many you can harvest per day, possession limit is the maximum you can have on you at anytime when you are outside of your ordinary residents (like on a boating trip) and annual limit is how many of that one species you can harvest that year. Hope that helps!

@@tannernabozniak5196 I spear the odd flounder. I mostly just grab them by hand though. I've never seen a halibut. They are deeper and live in different terrain than the areas we typically dive. Catching one would be sweet tho!
@@PNWSamson Ya, I know they live in hundreds of feet of water. In Oregon and California you can catch them from shore tho. That would be awesome to see you spear a halibut!

Yeah man good question. So many other pressing issues that get ignored. I'd love to find a career in the oceans but I'm happy enough diving and making videos. It's super fun and a rewarding experience. Cheers man!
DFO and some people can really take the fun out of things. Why go after a guy whose trying to do the right thing? Now we won't see any sea lion footage from here on out. Diving around Haida Gwaii would be impossible if I had to get out of the water for every seal, sea lion, porpoise, or whale that came along.
Yeah it won't be easy. They are much faster than us too. I'll still include sea lion footage in my videos but I'll be sure to give the whole picture as to how the interactions take place.
Whoever reported you is kind of a jerk. There is also paid explorations of race rock that don’t get dinged at all for swimming near sea lions. Props to you for enjoying nature and don’t worry about the haters.

"enticing/causing it to move" That's a tad extreme as we all know sea lions are curious and will check us out. I'd prefer the bulls didn't! True, we are in their environment but have every right to be.
Amen man. Unfortunately the DFO doesn't see it that way. The guy I talked to was super cool. I keep in touch with him now and he's been a helpful resource. It all worked out!

Well my friend you hit a nerve with me with this video, first thing it doesn't matter what you do or where you go there's always a winner in every crowd. Secondly DFO in my opinion is nothing but a joke. You want to see a DFO sanctioned destruction of wild life and the marine echo system come to French creek and watch the herring fishing, all for their roe so it can end up on a sushi plate. Thirdly the whole catch and release fishing for salmon should never happen so wrong and such a high mortality rate. I did not fish salmon last year till retention season, why go beat up on them for nothing.
Anyway I respect your idealism and look forward to your videos

True man. I'm not a fan of industrial fishing. Canada should not important/export fish. If we do catch fish it should at least stay in Canada. And agreed, people go spend a day catch and releasing rockfish. They basically kill 10+ a day when they go out. Catch and release fishing is pretty pointless and destructive. It's a shame what happens in our oceans just due to pure ignorance.
@@PNWSamson my family and I have a rule we live by if you kill it you eat it and only take what you need within the legal limits. The herring fishery is a soar spot with me , the whole idea of taking tones of fish out of the echo system just before they spawn is fundamentally wrong especially when all the other species rely on them.
On separate note I've had wales coming directly at me while fishing and then sound and disappeared, I suspect its the new sounder I put on the boat last year dual beam, dual frequency, chirp and all that nonsense has something to do with it. Will be shutting it off if it now there wales in the area from now on
All up the inside passage there is a huge fight going on with tour operators and general public about approach limits... if we listen to the government, tours wouldn’t have a chance to see a whale at half a KM, and the result is people who wander into these mammal territories or even ARE approached by wildlife are subject to this tattletale Karenism.
Even if the intention is good, and it was the animals instinct to go to the person, you are subject to fine and punishment... that’s not harmonious.
Yeah, they will basically have to outlaw diving if they want zero interactions with marine mammals. It's a hard thing to avoid while we are in the water. They are curious and swim a hell of a lot faster than we do. I'll do my best to avoid them but it won't be a easy task.
@@PNWSamson Me and a few friends from Vancouver Island were all dive instructors on the Great Barrier Reef and the rule was its their choice to approach you... altering your vessels course or swimming directly to get closer than 250 meters was findable but under the water and the animal approached you was 100% OK 👌 in fact it was a gift, and that’s where the magic is.. we had Mantas hover over our heads for the bubble wash, loved it.. humpbacks showing up beside our boat just cutting through entire dive groups, the interactions with sea life were endless, as long you didn’t tare off, but if you did, you’d never catch them. The BC DFO has to look at other similar situations in order to create a harmonious relationship with all parties. Keep doing what you’re doing, We need more BC stewardship sharing the magic around our coastal waters!
@@cecilPH that's the way I look at it too. I won't try and force interactions but when they happen naturally it is magic. Hopefully the DFO can use some discretion.
