    Absolutely love how Craftsman is making moves to fix the brand. Sad to see the US plant not make it, but they gave it an honest effort. More than I can say about other brands.

    • @nathans3022
      @nathans3022 Рік тому +6

      They really didn't give it an honest effort. They should have said.. "Hey, we are having issues with manufacturing so we'll be delaying putting out our USA made tools."
      Then just produce what they can at the plant until the manufacturing kinks are worked out. Even if its just USA socket sets.
      Then the US govt needs to impose a damn tariff on cheap chinese made handtools that the chinese govt subsidizes to have dumped in the USA at below cost pricing that manufacturers here can't compete with. Its why I won't buy "Made in China" hand tools. Ever. Taiwan, I'll consider if the quality is there but even those tools aren't cheap because Taiwan has really stepped up their game as they want to be known for their quality. Not quantity.

    "180 tooth" is probably just a dual-pawl with a 90 tooth gear. The 144 tooth husky ratchets are built with a 72 tooth gear and a dual-pawl to get 144 tooth engagements per rotation.

    My dad was a service person at an air port for all their heavy equipment, he bought all Craftsman tools in the 60’s and 70’s. He replaced a few as needed over the years. Before he passed away he handed me everything he had, three full tool carts on wheels of craftsman tools. I’ve used the crap out of them for 40 years and they are still in fine condition. I had to replace a few in that 40 years form normal use. I’m 60 now, when my day comes to leave this world and enter the next world my son will get all three carts of Craftsman tools. That will be three generations using my dads Craftsman tools. It saddens me America can’t make tools that last three generations like the old Craftsman tools.

  • @dustsmoke
    @dustsmoke Рік тому +5

    Project Farm tests on ratchets make me think this thing is going to be horribly weak and constantly breaking at 180 teeth. I'll bet you anything this thing is 2x90 tooth ratchet gears offset so you technically have 1/2 the surface strength of a typical 90 tooth pawl. But if it really is 180 tooth ratchet gear and pawl it'll strip out or slip under the lightest of loads so I kinda highly doubt that. Either scenario is bad news for whoever buys it. It makes me think Craftsman is doing the Dewalt/Black and Decker thing where they name their 18v (nominal) tool lines a dishonest 20v for maximum voltage to make people think they're getting more than the 5x3.6v packs they're actually getting inside their packs. For example, is your car battery 12v or is it 13v battery? If you ask Stanley its a 13v car battery because maximum voltage is 12.6v rounded to the nearest whole makes 13v. If they made car batteries they'd sell them as 13v and you'd buy them because 13v is more than 12v which makes them "more better". Its all 100% marketing and I suspect Craftsman is letting their marketing department design their tools for them at 180 teeth. Doesn't matter how well it works just so long as it does and has twice as many teeth because thats what customers believe makes tools better.

    I haven't seen that 180 tooth set at my local Lowe's. Yet. But, I'll go searching tomorrow. As far as the Craftsman tool boxes, they are still sub-par to what you can get at HF. And for a better price. I tell everyone that's looking for tool storage, to check out HF General line. As far as the older Craftsman boxes go, I bought my first toolbox 'stack' back in the 70's: 9 drawer lower, 3 drawer upper. It's still around, even after six household moves. Being a vintage sorta guy, I've got a collection of the old gray/red boxes (chevron logo) from the 70's. I have every size/configuration that was sold, with the exception of the 12 drawer top and 11 drawer lower. I also have a large amount of Craftsman wrenches/sockets. Most are at least 30 years old. I'm not impressed with the new stuff, and have been adding Husky/Kobalt/Gearwrench items to the shop.

The only box of theirs I still have left was one I bought in the early 90s and honestly the new ones are better... The slides are 100x better now and you can actually pick what side the handle and swivel wheels go on. The wheels on the old box were just screwed into the sheet metal no rivnuts back then(some had nuts and bolts though) I do prefer the layout of the old top boxes better than the hutches now. The hutch on boxes is a cheap out. Take out drawers and put in a lid. Oh and don't get me started on the old wrenches and ratchets...

    Only 21" depth and still not Griplatch (Craftsman's name for it) I'd be better off driving from Rochester, NY to Cleveland to buy the 56" Masterforce. Especially since I have no use for the milk crate sized bottom drawer. And Craftsman doesn't specify its storage volume anywhere on their site. While it may be rated for 900 pounds less, the Menards has 24" depth, 26,700 cu. in. storage, Raise and Release™ (Griplatch) drawers to match my 30 year old Craftsman (which, sadly, was only 18" depth), and costs $400 less (before Menards' useless to me rebates.)

Despite Kobalt hand tools having lifetime warranty, I had to get a manager involved to get it exchanged. Lowes has terrible customer service.

      @@MyNameIsNoneOfYourBusiness-v5g lowes hasn’t been bad at my store. I was dealing directly with craftsman. But they did me right with the 1/2” set they sent me. I can’t complain. It worked great for my water pump job I just did on my XJ. I don’t know how the ratchet will do after it fell in the bucket of swill during the job… but I wiped her up best I could!

    I don’t plan to hold them to any higher standard than anyone else making tools. The majority of their competitors do not make tools here either.
    Somehow because they used to make tools here, people love to hate on them being Taiwan or China, and then go and buy a competitor that’s made in Taiwan or China.
    Doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. We’d all love for them to be made here, but let’s face it, none of us want to pay those prices in 2023.

    Im rooting for craftsman..i really wish they would bring the tools back to the US. Tywan is good manufacturer but for me craftsman is a usa brand. If you wanted the best tools without buying snap on you went to sears.. if it broke they have you a new one. I think all the years and craftsman tools i used i took back maybe 3 sockets and they was my fault lol

    The V series and now this Overdrive stuff. Just confusion and muddling up the Craftsman brand. Brings nothing to the brand. If they want to take over the market; play hardball and cut the prices in half to start with. Then another half.

      I had a socket go bad. I called them and they wouldn’t replace it because it was a swivel and didn’t come as a single as it did when I bought it years ago. I asked for an impact 1/2” deep same size 13mm 6 pt. They said sure. Only thing was they were out of stock. I called back every week or two for two months. Each call I would get an email after asking how they did. I ignored them for a while and then after that time I decided to light them up with a response of how disappointed I was. They emailed me back in a half hour and sent me both the 13mm but also a V Series 1/2” box with a new ratchet extensions wobble and a ton of sockets all as an apology. So far the set has been great. I just wish I had the Standard version too!

    There are already prosumer brands with reasonable pricing coming out of Taiwan, so what is the value-add that Craftsman brings to the table? To me, the Craftsman brand was all about value tools made in the USA. Absent the USA aspect, I'll just stick with Tekton. At least Tekton sources some of their tools from the USA.
    Take care and God Bless.

    also growing up with craftsman, it hurts my heart to see what they have become. that said, while i need another tool set like a hole in the head, and will probably end up buying one of the new ones, i think their day is done.
    back in their heyday you didnt have all of the other viable options like you do today. you had $$$$$$$$ snap on and mac, craftsman, and literal hot garbage china tools. other than benchtop at kmart, which i think were criminally underrated, and was very upset to see them discontinued when kmart took over sears, craftsman was the no brainer go to back then. today there is kobalt, husky, gearwrench, icon, ect... all reasonably priced and useable. even the garbage pittsburg are actually somewhat useable these days.
    now that ive went on too long and no one is reading this any more, im going to talk about my benchtop tools. back when i was a teen working on my dirtbike, i had a few craftsman, i saw that kmart had these benchtop tools that were all marked as "lifetime guarantee" just like the craftsman. as we all know, a warranty is only as good as the service behind it, so i bought a 1/4" drive set thinking i would break one post haste, and see how good their return policy was. my local kmart was open for about 5-7 years after that, and i never managed to break ANY of those sockets, and bought others in the meantime. while im 46 years old and have about 10,000 sets now, so nothing gets used too heavily, i still have every benchtop tool i ever bought in perfect working order. (and ive broken SEVERAL craftsman tools though the years)

    TEKTON all the way . CRAFTSMAN MINI HEAD ratchets are fire but TEKTON they have better ratchets and only just made my first choice over those but TEKTON Ratchets are my go to and the sockets are best for the money . I like the craftsman mini head but TEKTON is that with a longer handle and better quality if craftsman had a available rebuild kit and better machining I would be on the fence about best ratchet ever made because I like the handle on both craftsman is shorter and comfortable TEKTON is longer and comfortable and with rebuild kit available
