  • “Henry Archibald Hertzberg Lawson” (17 June 1867 - 2 September 1922) was an Australian writer and bush poet. Along with his contemporary Banjo Paterson, Lawson is among the best-known Australian poets and fiction writers of the colonial period and is often called Australia's "greatest short story writer". A vocal nationalist and republican, Lawson regularly contributed to The Bulletin, and many of his works helped popularise the Australian vernacular in fiction. He wrote prolifically into the 1890s, after which his output declined, in part due to struggles with alcoholism and mental illness. At times destitute, he spent periods in Darlinghurst Gaol and psychiatric institutions. After he died in 1922 following a cerebral haemorrhage, Lawson became the first Australian writer to be granted a state funeral. “The Drover’s Wife” was published in the Bulletin in July 1892. This reading of the classic Australian tale is by noted Australian actor Nigel Lovell.

The Drovers wife was read to us by our school teacher Mr Enright in 1954 our school was beside the Snowy River in a little town called Jindabyne 35 miles from Cooma New South Wales Australia.
It was lovely to hear the story again after all this time
The children rode on horseback to school it was small and half the pupils were from displaced families that came to Australia from Germany after the war, they worked on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme building dams ans tunnels in this school we were taught English as none of us could speak the language
It was more difficult for our parents we kids soon began to understand the lingo
Jindabyne was flooded in 1967 and a new town was built on higher ground over looking Lake Jindabyne.
We all went our way I am hoping someone may see this upload and read this comment who know we may even know each other. thanks for the upload English Story

Can you even begin to imagine the horror of this ? Left alone with children and the risk of human predators. That lady was incredibly brave.

''Along with his contemporary Banjo Paterson, Lawson is among the best-known Australian poets and fiction writers of the colonial period''.
Inaccurate to claim that Banjo Patterson was a fiction writer. He wrote many factual stories of his time in the bush as well as in WW1.

Personally I don't understand how this fear with the snake even happened. They must surely have known their place in the natural world??

Don't go into the bush if you're frightened of the wildlife. This is not your territory. Stay in your own place
