What a splendid programme that features great music and a well written script - so unlike the rubbish we have on too many dumbed down BBC radio programmes these days.. I was fortunate to interview Mary Ellis. Her support for Ivor Novello showed how false Terrence Davies' ghastly treatment of him was in his film Bendiction. Novello was a kind and generous person and not the petty minded monster as portrayed in Davies's film. How sad to realised such a talent is now all but forgotten - ignored by a generation brought up on inferior and far less talented scores. If you find more than one memorable tune in a modern original stage musical you will be lucky. It's only with the juke-box musicals you stand a chance. The ability to compose memorable songs seems to be lost. Thank you for this reminder of a great talent!

I bought a CD version of this in high school in the 90’s and know every word and every note. I don’t have a CD player anymore and have missed it so much. Now I can have it back in my Christmas lineup so thank you so much for providing it!

I like the orchestration from the band on this version (which I think is as good as the Carroll Gibbons version) but the vocalist here (don't know who she is) is certainly no Anne Lenner who did a much better job at singing the lyrics on the Gibbons version. The voice of the vocalist here is, unfortunately, particularly grating.

Rebranded version of the original which was made for 2UE in Sydney then rehashed for their affiliate stations. I think in Sydney they made a TV commercial for 2UE with that as a backdrop showing major Sydney attractions and icons. They were the great days of commercial radio, now long gone.

is it known who did the background vocals? they all sound a lot like bowlly, but I don’t think it was possible at the time to record him multiple times and layer them over each other

Excellent presenter . I listened to him regularly when he hosted a music program on the great late 3KZ which I think would have been in the late sixties or early seventies . And like the music format featured on the above recording of his final 3AK program , the songs he played there were enjoyably diverse , consisting of many genres , catering for all tastes . Wish we had broadcasters like him today .

Ev'ry time I see a puppy upon a summer's day A puppy dog at play My heart is filled with envy That's because My heart is yearning to pass the time away Like that pup 'cause I'm all fed up And tho' it's wrong to be I long to be NOW PLAYING Lazy I want to be lazy I want to be out in the sun With no work to be done Under that awning They call the sky Stretching and yawning And let the world go drifting by I want to peep Through the deep Tangled wildwood Counting sheep 'til I sleep Like a child would With a great big valise full Of books to read where it's peaceful While I'm Killing time Being lazy

You're as pretty as a picture Has anyone ever told you before You're the image of an angel from above And you were just meant for me to adore You're the model of perfection The others are only copies of you Can't you see the only thing that worries me I wonder if you're to good to be true Your eyes, your hair You're a perfect colour scheme You're much too fair You must have stepped out of a dream You're as pretty as a picture A beautiful exhibition of art When I say you fairly take my breath away Just picture what you have done to my heart

This should be on Apple Music! I am a HUGE Al Bowlly fan and I think they recently sang this song in I Love Lucy in a vaudeville skit in "Mertz and Kurtz" (1954)! Anyway, the one on Apple Music STIIIIIIIIIIIIINKS because it's remastered horribly. This is beautiful in contrast! Thanks for posting!

Thanks very much for uploading for us to enjoy! I once owned a copy of this album. Wish I still had it. I became aware of it when a local radio station played back in the late 60s, "The Ballad of Irving". Fell in love with that novelty tune. When I called the station they told me they had obtained it from this album. I went to a local radio station & ordered a copy. Great skits & a great cast!
