I'm with Andrew. I couldn't care less about an always on display. Always disabled it in my Android days and will be disabling it when my 14 Pro Max gets here. Seeing the time and notifications is what my watch is for or I simply tap the screen to temporarily wake it. It's never been beneficial enough for me to sacrifice the additional battery life.
@@cgnomazoid It’s because the non pro iPhones don’t have the display to take advantage of it. I believe the standard 14 can only drop to a minimum frame rate of 10Hz which would obliterate the battery. The new pro model displays can go all the way down to 1Hz.

It’s such a bad implementation, I don’t understand why they did it. I think the classic MKBHD argument “they wait but they do it right” doesn’t work here. This was by far my favorite Waveform episode so far (funny how I said the same thing for the hot sauce episode). Marques was so funny with some of his nonchalant comments. Andrew was so excited to hear about the hiking experience of the Ultra Watch while David was just being David, haha. Love it!
With the Apple Watch, you can just tap that countdown for any workout to bypass it. So you start the workout and then tap the screen during the countdown to start right away. FYI
The "mountaineering" guy is actually more of an "enthusiast hiker". When I'm thinking about mountaineering, I think about actual alpinism. That requires skills in rock climbing, ice climbing, dry-tooling, glacier travel, and crevasse rescue. The actual Garmin watch for something like that is more Fenix than Forerunner. I can't see the Apple Watch Ultra replacing this any time soon. Especially with a 60 hr extended battery.
The communication between diving computer and equipment is using sound/ultrasonic. Radio/Bluetooth doesn't work underwater. So it's not just an easy software update to make it ready for technical. Also the difference between "recreational" and "technical" is a defined regulatory distinction, that's why mentioning it is so important.
I think one of the things y'all don't realize about Garmins is how cheap they can be. My running watch cost me only $100 but still lasts me a week, has better GPS than any smartwatch I've tried before, and does basic smart watch functions. For $200-300 you can get a fully featured smart watch. The Ultra will not replace most Garmins, Tomtoms, Polars, it just doesn't compete with them.
I have a vivoactive HR that is still going strong since about 2016/2017. Battery lasts all week and does what I want a watch to do. Not to mention, I don't worry about scratching it when doing physical labor like I would an Apple watch.
The diving instructor is only partially correct. We use another type of gas with more oxygen called EANx in recreational diving. Almost all dive computers support this. Most of dive computers in the price range of the ultra also comes with air integration, meaning you can attach a transmitter in to your tank and monitor your gas on your wrist. Another point is that the best dive computers are big (like the Shearwater Perdix) because it caters also to recreational divers diving in cold waters. That crown will be terrible to use with gloves used in diving. There is a watch that already does what the ultra does for diving. The Garmin Descent line is basically a fenix with a dive computer that does air integration as well. More reliable battery performance too. It attaches to most of Garmin's emergency beacon/devices too. I won't worry much about the UI cause most dive computers start the dive the moment you descend. Shearwater does the best UI in dive computers. It's a good first attempt from Apple and I hope it inspires other tech and diving equipment companies to go further.
also oceanic+ requires 80$/yr subscription but it does do nitrox according to Oceanic. The really should've gotten a diver that spent more than 5min looking at the presentation recap.
Loved the input from ‘recreational’ athletes. It was awe inspiring listening to everything they do. Especially the runner. Real life Forrest Gump! Also, P.S.: You can skip the countdown when you start a workout almost immediately by tapping on the display and it’ll go straight into the workout.

This episode was definitely longer, but the reviews from the athletes were very helpful! And I loved the speculation about the future of Apple; it's such a fascinating topic.
As a "recreational" runner, I'll still stick with my Garmin. It just feels way more specialized and has a lot more data that helps me a lot. It also pairs with the Garmin HR monitor to give me super accurate HR monitoring + info about my vertical movement and more accurate cadence measurement.
For scuba diving you missed some major points: - Oceanic+ requires a subscription 80$/yr - Garmin has Descent Series for the same price and gas air integration and the scuba diving feature there is properly certified and walled of from the rest of the system, rather than some 3rd party app that may or may not be reliable
I have to agree with Andrew. We knew a lot more about the Pixel 5 and 6 prior to their event compared to the Pixel 7 this year. I see you Andrew, I see you lol
Just as an FYI for the countdown on the Apple Watch before starting workout: If you tap the screen once you start the workout it will start immediately, skipping the countdown altogether.
I work at Verizon and from my experience, everybody either buys the baseline iPhone or the pro max iPhone and sometimes the pro. I think the plus is gonna flop.
At 11:45 seriously? Have you even seen the choppy transitions when going in and out of landscape apps? Island doesn’t know what it’s doing. Have you not tried screen recording? Everything is so jitter-ful around the rounded corners
I have the Suunto and what they didn't mention is that it cost about $150+ to change the battery bc it was to be done under pressure (or voids warranty)
Dynamic island is the front-facing calling card for pro iPhones as is the notch and home button on older models. That’s why little identifying icons use those elements. A blank screen can’t happen as it can be any phone.
I can see the price predictions lining up with the $599 for the standard 7 and $799-$849 for the 7 Pro. There was definitely not a $300 difference in last years 6 and 6 Pro phones. We'll have to wait and see what Google has up their sleeve with these phones. We don't know enough to see if it's worth the upgrade for P6 owners. From the pictures the build quality looks better with how the camera surround is better integrated with the phones frame which minimizes or eliminates seam points that exist on the P6 phones.

@5.12 It smartly detects when you are sleeping, or disconnected from Apple Watch, and it will black the screen in those instances, so sleeping will not be an issue.
The thing I'm confused is if you have an Apple Watch why do you need an always on display? The Apple Watch has sold really well so a lot of users have one with their iPhone. In such a case, it makes little sense to have an always on display.
The Apple Watch Ultras battery just isnt there for ultra running / long hikes. It states on the website that it tracks less frequent readings for heartrate and GPS....no runner wants that! Also, it doesnt have maps! My Garmin has full maps installed for following courses etc....nearly there Apple :)
You can use Apple Music on Android phones so the lossless audio wire thing makes a little sense (I use apple music on my pixel 4a 5G, although I use pixel buds a series)
Don’t take the notes. You can watch it again. I know watching a 1 and half hour event second time is the worst but you’ll have peace of mind during the event.
As a scuba diver, recreation but French, our license let us dive down 60m with air, I have been diving few times down 48-50 meters. I would wait until they make it recreational ready for 60m beside that I will use a dedicated device for tech diving. I am also ultra trail running, and that is nice to have all those new features but one thing I prefer on my Suunto during trainings is the preparation of my runs on their map drawing the routes. I don’t have a map while running but a line that I can see if I get off trail. Wish to have a watch that display on the screen if I’m supposed to go left or right at forks during trainings. I also need and love to use NGP (normalized graded pace) since we are trail running 6:00 miles on flat doesn’t compare to 12:00 miles when hitting 300ft of climbing seeing the relative efforts on display helps to confirm to myself if I should push harder or not. For the mountaineering having a barometer is key to me, when I go in the mountains 🏔️ and it’s white out and you can’t see anything the confirmation of the right altitude and the compass is nice the way point become useful for this activity to make sure I follow the ridge line and don’t fall off the cliff. I think Apple is making moves but I’d like to see one more action button and these features Maybe the ultra 2 will make me switch so I don’t use 2/3 devices
I think that ultra marathoner is being a little biased and a apple fanboy. Garmin and Suunto are the best known for their precise GPS. Moreover, New Forerunner series and epix in Garmin have dual GPS frequently with forerunner 955 having solar charging and costing way less that Apple Watch Ultra. Besides, all runners need in a watch is precise GPS, longest battery life and other running dynamics. Although I did love the whole loud 86 db siren, GPS waypoint and ofc apple ecosystem for Apple users. Having said that, Garmin are much more made for a long distance runners for now. Apple Watch Ultra is a good start but still needs to come a long way. P.S. I speak for Garmin as I'm a Garmin user, Suunto, Coros are good too.
Unfortunately, the Oceanic app does not display your tank pressure from a tank mounted transmitter. That is a big part of the equation when diving for sport or technical diving.
8:29 Couldn't agree more. Always found always-on to be pointless, but god do I miss that notification LED old android use to have. If they let us have this through software I'd be thrilled. Maybe in a few IOS versions...
How crazy am I if there is a watch band with an extra battery so you can have a week-long battery? And you can charge both at the same time when they are both dead
There are apps that use the camera cutout as a notification light. AOD Notify is one of them. They work ok, putting a ring, or some pattern you set, around that circle. You may have better luck using it with a Rooted Pixel or OP phone than a locked Galaxy or something, but they do exist and do work well. And yea, this is with the screen off.
Just to clarify that you don’t need Trimix or other gases below 40m depth. Those are needed deeper as Oxygen toxicity appears below 60m. The 40m recreational depth limit is related to Nitrogen narcosis. The biggest no-no is the Oceanic subscription model, +80€ a year is plainly stupid when everyone else offers it for free when buying a dive computer. Also the need to add air integration.
I got the official MKBHD hoodie and the white MKBHD water bottle. I've been using the water bottle everyday but in Cali it's still not hoodie season so the hoodie is in it's wrapping until I can actually utilize it. Considering how hot it's been here in the Bay I have no clue when I'll be wearing it LOL
I wish Apple could figure out a version of AOD "the Apple way" that isn't just dimming the screen. Take advantage of the OLED tech and just have your wallpaper fade away to black leaving a clock and select widgets on.
pro tip for the Apple Watch running countdown issue! If you start it and tap it after it’ll stop the countdown and just start. Works at any point during the count down :)
I don’t often disagree with MKBHD but he said the 14 pro max isn’t that much different than an XS max or 11 Pro Max? Even average consumers would notice a big improvement in battery, camera and screen quality between the 14 pro and a phone from 3-4 years ago
The iPhone 15 is supposed to get the dynamic island and the next SE is possible going to have the XR body with an Oled display. These reports are from Display analyst Ross Young who is the most accurate with display leaks. He put out the iPhone screens up to the year 2028
I still dont agree with the apple watch vs garmin, having the fenix 7 X pro solar i wouldnt change it for apple watch anytime soon, its a decent smart watch for what i need, notifications and basic stuff, it has batrery for 30 days, and way way better then it comes to gps battery life, waypoints are on garmin for years now and trackback too, you can also track most health stuff so i dont see the hyoe of this when you already have garming doing the same for a while now, we are also yet to see how strong that glass reqlly is on the AW.
Would prefer if you guys could lead up to the question and then let the guest provide his response, instead of summarizing his response, then giving the actual response. Feels redundant. What was the decision behind that for?

I think Apple is making moves but I’d like to see one more action button and these features
Maybe the ultra 2 will make me switch so I don’t use 2/3 devices
Love the 3 host's format
Unfortunately, the Oceanic app does not display your tank pressure from a tank mounted transmitter. That is a big part of the equation when diving for sport or technical diving.
Great crew!
"USB-C is a pipe dream" heheh
Love David
8:29 Couldn't agree more. Always found always-on to be pointless, but god do I miss that notification LED old android use to have. If they let us have this through software I'd be thrilled. Maybe in a few IOS versions...
What tey're telling is, samsung will remove the camera hole and after 3-4 years, apple will release a new iScreen with in-display iCamera
Omg, I'm falling asleep 😴 💤 😩Have you watched yourselves back . 😩💤😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
I like the current Apple events with produced presentations, they are more to the point and efficient use of time.
Great insights from the longdistane runner, really interesting how small features have a huge impact, wish him the best!
I really hope google does a great job with the pixel 7 pro, but if the screen isn’t flat than I’ll have to pass
You can actually skip the count down if you touch the screen when starting.
I would love to see Andrew test drive the ultra for a few hikes over a couple months and review it on here!
I have a strong belief the term Ultra for the apple watch (instead of Pro) has a huge inspiration on "Ultra marathoners". What do you guys think?
I don’t often disagree with MKBHD but he said the 14 pro max isn’t that much different than an XS max or 11 Pro Max? Even average consumers would notice a big improvement in battery, camera and screen quality between the 14 pro and a phone from 3-4 years ago
Yesssiirr let’s gooooo. My favorite part of the week. Up there with HOT D every Sunday.
The iPhone 15 is supposed to get the dynamic island and the next SE is possible going to have the XR body with an Oled display. These reports are from Display analyst Ross Young who is the most accurate with display leaks. He put out the iPhone screens up to the year 2028
hey guys quick question, what lens do you guys use to fit two people in frame? like at 15:30
It can be more dim and cozy lighting.
And adding an extra tech head is great.
great episode, love the interviews for the apple watch ultra. If the price isnt that high, will get one as well
I still dont agree with the apple watch vs garmin, having the fenix 7 X pro solar i wouldnt change it for apple watch anytime soon, its a decent smart watch for what i need, notifications and basic stuff, it has batrery for 30 days, and way way better then it comes to gps battery life, waypoints are on garmin for years now and trackback too, you can also track most health stuff so i dont see the hyoe of this when you already have garming doing the same for a while now, we are also yet to see how strong that glass reqlly is on the AW.
Tapping the watch when it’s counting down to start your workout cancels the countdown and starts the workout right away
Would prefer if you guys could lead up to the question and then let the guest provide his response, instead of summarizing his response, then giving the actual response. Feels redundant. What was the decision behind that for?
Yes please.. Just an episode for Trivia questions
