GLACIER GIRL ROCKS! P-38 Lightning at the Reno Air Races

  • / warbirdvideos - Just a bit of history. P-38s are very quiet, they're not like P-51s at all. I shot Glacier Girl mostly with a telephoto lens (20-1) Once the plane passed, there was NO engine sound. The background song on this video "Learning to Fly" was written by David Gilmour, the lead Guitarist for the British rock band "Pink Floyd". David owned a P-51 Mustang for a number of years, so he too is a Warbird enthusiast. Many people who see this video don't like the music, well, tough. I do. check out my other videos, many without music at ua-cam.com/users/warbir.... Steve
    Glacier Girl is the Lockheed P-38F-1-LO Lightning that was recovered from under 200 feet of ice on the remote Greenland Ice Sheet after nearly fifty years. Steve Hinton brought her to the 2009 Reno Air Races for public display. Monday morning is always a special time at Stead airport in Nevada because the crowds and those pesky air show announcers are gone and the planes leave for home over the course of several hours in the late morning and early afternoon.
    I captured Steve Hinton on a short test hop just prior to his departure with his brother John, who flew a Bearcat.
    The day before, Steves son Stevo won the Gold Unlimited Race flying P-51 Strega. At 22 years of age, he became the youngest Unlimited winner in history, taking the honored position from his father who held it since 1978 at age 26.
    The shots in the video are purposely a little long, but you guys (and gals) who love airplanes will understand!

    Truly a beautiful aircraft. Early P-38 like this one were basically “hand built” airframes with a much higher quality finish than the later models.

      Well, P-38s are very quiet airplanes, especially the early models (nothing like a P-51). In fact, for most of the flight, there was no sound at all. Even with a directional mic, at 2 miles all you could hear was the grounds people striking the pit area because the races had ended the day before. You might like these videos better:

    She does rock . I heard of the B17 and the P38 long before they tried to get her out of the ice . How they were forced down in a blizzard and the mission to retrieve the Norton bomb sight .
    I knew of getting out of the ice the restoration but I didn't know what they named her. Very fitting and very cool.

      Most of us know that. The twin exhaust driven turbos quiet the V-1710 Allisons.
      Would still prefer silence or natural sound artifacts to lame efforts to build up the adrenaline with bad music.
      Pentrex spoils lots of RR videos on the same fashion.
      Big engines make beautiful music. Don’t need accompaniment.
      BTW, never liked Pink Floyd. And I was a teen in the 60s.

    God I love these old warbirds, back when planes had class. I had an old family friend who loved the p-38. He'd been in the Pacific in WWII and his company got pinned down by Japanese fire. He had to call in support and a couple p-38s flew in and decimated the Japanese. Never had the chance to learn many details. Talking about that stuff always made him tear up.

Saw Glacier Girl years ago at Lakeland's Sun 'n Fun..........as Joe Lentz said below, it did choke me up, too. In the mid 50's, had a P-38 fly over my house in Miami, on final approach to 27R at Miami International Airport. I wonder if these 'long-nose' Allisons have some kind of modern prop reduction ring gear. The original was a problem. I imagine modern metals/methods might allow the 'overhung' design to be more stable and robust. This is my favorite mark of 38. Just beautiful. • @AlanRoehrich9651
      @AlanRoehrich9651 2 роки тому +1

      Because the Merlin was larger, heavier, less reliable, less fuel efficient, and without the even larger two speed two stage supercharger, made considerably less power.
      The Merlin would have made the P-38 slower, less agile, handicapped in range and altitude, and more expensive.
      Kelly Johnson, chief engineer of the P-38 program, had a design study done, and the results were bad enough that no actual attempt was made to install Merlins.

      Thanks for the response. I don't mind the music, but not when I'm trying to hear an already "quiet" aircraft thunder past. I like the deep "thrumming" sound the P-38's engines make as it soars past. I've followed "Glacier Girl" from when it was recovered, through the restoration to former beauty, and the videos of it flying in airshows. Thanks for posting the video anyway. I just turn down the volume, and watch it roam it's home, the sky.

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 6 років тому

      +kein mcgill Only in the sense that both the P-51A and the P-38 used variants of the Allison V12. A Merlin-engined P-38 was considered but not built. It would have taken too much time to shut down the production and retool, and the Merlin size would require moving some plumbing and perhaps new landing gear geometry. I do think some design work was done to create QEC engine packages but that was all.

    • @AlanRoehrich9651
      @AlanRoehrich9651 2 роки тому

      The engineering study commissioned by Kelly Johnson found that there would be only negative results, and zero gains to installing the Merlin. Even without the two speed two stage supercharger that made it work for the P-51, the Merlin is larger and heavier. It literally wouldn't fit. Further, it would ruin the CG. Finally, even with the two speed two stage supercharger, which made the package worse, climb rate, acceleration, top speed, combat radius, critical altitude, and operational ceiling would all be substantially reduced.

    Big Question? Would changing the engines make much of a difference. Placing the CCW from Left pylon to right and CW engine from Right pylon to left.

      If I remember correctly from reading Martin Caidin's "Fork-Tailed Devil: The P-38", they actually experimented with that configuration during development.
      As I recall, it had some characteristics in single-engine flight (done to simulate the loss of one engine) that caused significant control issues; the inward-rotating configuration seen on production models - like Glacier Girl - didn't have those problems.

    I WANT TO FLY IN A P38L before I die! My number one BUCKET LIST ITEM! And yes love pink Floyd just not when Allison's are running love sound of all AMERICAN AIRCRAFT, but P38 is the best even if its quietest engine made! Wonder how she would have done in WW2 if they put the same Rolls Royce Merlin's as the P51's! I get that not enough were made, and the nacelles would have to been modified big time! But I think the gains would have FAR OUT WEIGHED ANY BAD PARTS!

    That aircraft was saved from major corrosion while encased in ice by one thing, it's nose wheel. It was magnesium which acted as a sacrificial anode. This is the one part that was very badly corroded.
    A good thing, considering.

    So, was this P-38 fitted with the dive flaps to address the compressibility issue these planes had?

    • @AlanRoehrich9651

      No, Glacier Girl is an early model. The first P-38 to be fitted with dive flaps when they were built was the P-38J-25-Lo. There were a large number of retrofit kits for the P-38J-10-Lo and later models, but a guy in a Spitfire shot down the C-54 that was carrying them, and they were lost.

    The P-38's sound doesn't rip through the air like a Mustang, but it sure does purr nicely with the twin Allisons and the turbo superchargers. Loose the stinking damm muzak.

    Did they ever put merlins/griffons in a p38.

    • @AlanRoehrich9651
      @AlanRoehrich9651 2 роки тому

      Never. Even without the two speed two stage supercharger, even the Merlin was too big and two heavy
      Kelly Johnson commissioned a design study, which proved that the Merlin swap, even if they could either make the two speed two stage supercharger fit, or make the engine run well enough without it, the excess size, and weight, combined with the power reduction, would have resulted in reduced performance in every category.
