Good choice with the MoonBeasts Pawns. Hard encounters are important. And you gave them warning. This is their Kobiashi Maru, not yours. But, for me, as long as the players come up with SOMETHING out of the box, it works. But I have TPK'd a group at this point of the adventure if they just decided to fight.
My players have learnt that encounters in Drakkenhiem aren't always "balanced" to their level, they've also learnt that running away is an option and things will progress whether they're there or not.

I agree. I'm all for thinking outside the box and getting creative, but there is such a thing as being in over your head! 💀

I have the Cthulhu 5e book, but I don't care for most of the stat blocks in it.
