Weren't most of the Ramones Jewish? And are we really worried about the Velvet Underground's politics? Weren't half of the people from that scene wigged out on heroin? They weren't exactly exemplary individuals in a moral sense. I agree with your idea of separating the art from the artist.
Yeah, I've never really known the racial or cultural background of the members of The Ramones because I never thought to look it up. Haha. I just listen to their music. I know I definitely read somewhere that Dee Dee had family members with a Nazi connection. But that's only because the news was provocative and juicy so it spread all over the place. I agree with you about Velvet Underground. I'd read the stuff about Nico (again, only because it was everywhere due to being juicy) but I don't care. She's a crackpot! She'd probably hate black people one day and think that possums were trying to take over the world the next.
I really appreciate Myke's responses in how he takes a step back and zooms out when needed, and also encourages further research and not just taking something at face value. Myke dude you inspire me to keep trying to look at the bigger picture and expand my perspective. Love the videos, keep up the great work.
hey myke thanks for answering, im realizing that "scared" was a pretty stupid word to use.. i probably meant bothered by. but u definitely changed my view on whats going on and i feel better about it.. great video and thanks
I don't know how many times I've heard comments like "if you like this you're not a real man/only real man like this", although not to me personally as far as I know/remember -- but who cares if I don't fit into your idea of what a man is? So what if i'm not "real" in your fantasy, at least I am.
Always enjoy tour videos and loved your answer to both questions. The question about the indie scene was mind boggling. First Nico was around way before the indie scene. Second my experience with most people in the indie scene is that they are quite open minded. Maybe the dude wasn't even serious. Who knows.
Football actually did help me develop into a better man, but not only because of how the game is tough or whatever but because it surrounded me with some pretty good male figures. I had some pretty good coaches who would implement life lessons into the game and really taught me a lot outside of the football field.
Good comment on the gender roles. I too grew up around women even though my dad was around. My dad grew up that way too and we didn't learn things expected of men like manual labor skills for example. Having Hispanic woman we were served hand and foot for everything we needed in the home. This actually led to some issues for me when I met my wife then my girlfriend in the 90s l. In the 50s women were expected to do everything for men but that started to change with women's right's. So when I didn't know how to work a dishwasher, or washer/dryer, or vaccum and mop properly it was actually more to my disadvantage and turning off more then my lack of manual labor skills. Naturally I had to learn those things and yeah some of it is not natural to me but my point is it goes both ways and if we are stuck with old ideology of what men and women can do, or what their role is in their gender you may find yourself uncomfortable. I went against allot of my examples set by society early on and I have found it has made me a better person.
Awesome videos man, gotta say, you are very insightful for whatever topic you´re dealing with. Someday i would love to hear recomendations for getting into Metal, coming from someone who is more into indie rock, or alternative rock, sometimes it saddens me that a record like sunbather turns me off so much because of the agrressive vocals, yet i can really get into it instrumentaly. Maybe you have tips getting into the rougher spots of metal music? What was your expierience getting into that kind of music?. Anyway cheers man, all the way from Colombia, pardon the faulty english.
Thanks for the vid, Myke. It's nice to hear people saying men don't need to follow the gender roles. Women are generally very encouraged to act outside their gender roles these days and many of them do. Women do not generally find themselves enjoying something and then scolded for liking something that is "for men" the way men get scolded for liking something that is for "women." It is probably that kind of scolding that leads the guy who wrote to you into being bothered that he is not "enough of a man" or whatever.
Bartholomule01 Yeah, I agree. I went through that as a kid. Not liking sports...being vegetarian. Two things that definitely get you called "sissy" or "faggot" very quickly. I'm assuming this guy's going through the same thing.
Sure, there are overly effeminate gay men, but the truth is, that kind of behavior and those kind of mannerisms, etc don't just come with being gay. I've got a number of gay friends in my life and aside from dudes they've been in relationships with or fucked there is nothing that "gay" about them.Sexual orientation does not really inform your actions, traits, personalities as much society likes to pretend it does.
Had no father in my household, and I admittedly think I'm an effeminate man(I think I have low testosterone honestly) . I'm mostly fine with it. Although I was really good at football......
I get a lot of questions to my Tumblr. A lot aren't interesting enough to me at the time to make a video about. I don't know which question you're talking about but maybe it'll get answered in a future one. But thanks for sending it!
I think men should stand up for their rights just like women do. I'm not putting down feminism or anything, but I don't like the impression that women are the only ones being oppressed in a certain way or whatever. Wherever there's a double standard towards women, there's one for men in the opposite sense. If we ever want true equality, both sides need to come together and fight for each other as well as for ourselves.
Myke C-Town let me jump in. For example women take advantage of men during child's custody. Men get stuck paying child support typically right or wrong . Nothing to do with who the better parent. If it takes two ppl to have sex and then only 1 person to be able to decide if abortion is an option , that Is not equal. Then you have woman accusing men of rape , of being the father, of beating them resulting in men caught up in the system life ruined to find out she lied. What are the repercussions? Nothing, no laws against that. Woman can lie on men in many different scenarios like this often ruining them with no penalty. We already had at least one lady in The Cosby debacle caught lying red handed and guess what no legal ramifications for almost putting a man in prison for something he didn't do. Afroman hit that woman on stage who climbed up and got arrested. No problem but if it was a man nothing would have happened. See my drift
Myke C-Town I guess oppression was a bad word to use, I really meant that men should address the double standards placed on us as well. Women getting softer sentences than men for the same crime. Men having to give half in a divorce, do women have to do the same if the male was a house dad? Being a house dad is looked down upon. Women aren't the only ones that feel insecure about their physical attributes either those there's an impression that they are: Men can be too short, not enough muscle, bald, etc. but the reason it's not addressed is because men are taught to suck it up. There's also the fact that the man is supposed to supply the money and tons of women won't give you a look if you don't have enough but it's ok for women to mooch off of men. And like djwarzone said, some of the rape laws are ridiculous, especially in my state of California, it's made it way too easy to lie on a man. I'm not saying actual rapes shouldn't be cracked down on but some of these laws now are ridiculous. This wasn't the best structured comment by those are just some of the things.
djwarzone1 Child custody. You go to court and petition for custody. If the man wins, he doesn't pay support. If he doesn't win, he does pay support. So, not seeing your point there. The reason only one of you gets the final decision on abortion is because only one of you has to make the decision of whether you let this mound of cells inside you become an actual human being and grow inside you and give birth to it. When that changes, the laws will change. What are the repercussions of getting a man thrown in jail for a false accusation of rape or abuse? How about perjury...punishable by law? Then the man has the right to sue. So again...missing your point on that one, too. There are laws to protect men from this. This is why rape is so hard to prove. But there's no law to protect men from the court of public opinion as there shouldn't be. Next...Afroman hitting that woman and was arrested. I don't know why I keep seeing people claiming if he hit a man he wouldn't have been arrested. That's just not true. If the guy called the cops and filed an assault charge, Afroman would have been arrested. Assault is assault. "We had one lady in the Cosby debacle caught lying." One out of...what are we up to now? 26? OK, so that is an example of inequality how? So, nah, bro. I'm still missing it. I'd still like to know how men are being oppressed by women.
Dont Know This is incorrect. The man doesn't always have to pay half! The person who pays half is the one who makes more money. And guess who that typically is. The man. If you think that's just because women are lazy, you really need to think harder about that. As far as the laws being easy to "lie on a man" that's anywhere. You can walk into any police station and lie. But what's not easy is proving your case. Especially in rape. And that's anywhere in the US. You guys are posing this like you can just walk into any station, say someone raped you, and he automatically goes to jail. No, that's not the way it works. Everything else you named (men being too short, bald, not strong enough, etc.) are false ideals that MEN put into place. Not women! We told each other we have to be this and that. That became the norm and then some (superficial) women went along with it. And now it's seen as the rule. Who teaches men to "suck it up?" Other men. Who teaches men that they have to be big and strong? Other men. Guess who would be the first one to tease a man about being a housedad? Other men. This is definitely a case of inequality, but it's a case of male-imposed inequality. You can't blame women for that.
Weren't most of the Ramones Jewish? And are we really worried about the Velvet Underground's politics? Weren't half of the people from that scene wigged out on heroin? They weren't exactly exemplary individuals in a moral sense. I agree with your idea of separating the art from the artist.

Joey was jewish. I don't know if the rest of the guys were.

Great! I'm glad to hear it, man! Don't let the actions of a few idiots scare or bully you away from music!

Great work as always Myke. One of the best channels on UA-cam yet so simple.

I had a dad & i'm pretty effeminate. But i'm pretty ok with it
As you should be!

Dont Know That's cool...but I'm sure you got my point concerning sports.

Oh yeah of course, I was just saying lol

President C-Town, it's got a nice ring to it ;) On point again dude.
i lost it at "i'm scared of indie music".

My question was too boring for you to answer? If it was I understand... I sent it to you on your Tumblr.
I get a lot of questions to my Tumblr. A lot aren't interesting enough to me at the time to make a video about. I don't know which question you're talking about but maybe it'll get answered in a future one. But thanks for sending it!
No problem man! I figured you might not have seen it with all the questions you get.
Johnny ramone wasn't a national haha .early punks just played with the imagery to come off nasty or edgy

Dont Know I find it intriguing when people make these types of comments but I never get a solid answer when I ask in what way are men being oppressed?

NAILED gender roles
Pizza Roles not Gender Roles
People are racist. Genres of popular music aren't.
Morrisey comments aged poorly. Haha.
