Really bad take. His contract will age just fine when the new tv money kicks and salary cap's will increase by 10% for multiple years in a row. Jazz's plan all along has been to renegotiate and extend him. Markkanen was never on the market per se but could be had for massive overpay. Also, Jazz can tank next season by giving good minutes to their six guys under 21 and making absolutely sure Markkanen is fully and utterly healthy after every bruise.
You can't take if you don't want a disgruntled Markkanen at his age who has still yet to make the playoffs. He's going to want to start winning. The contract will look better over time, but it still limits his trade value with teams weary of the new CBA aprons

Has been saying for very long time now that he is on board with the rebuild and I'm sure there were talks about the coming season when they negotiated the contract. Jazz want to keep him long term, but if rebuild doesn't go as planned and it seems Jazz don't have the pieces to make a push toward championship in the latter part of his contract. He will still have very significant trade value, despite his contract. You also seem not to realize that the salary constrains due new cba are at their worst right now. It won't be as restrictive in the coming years.

Disagree. Warriors best offer was moody , Wiggins two 1st , and two swaps . That’s a bad bad offer . You need one first and one swap just to wipe out Wiggins bad contract. That left you with only moody , one first , and one swap for laura marketeen which is not a good deal for the jazz .
I think all Danny Ainge moves need at least a year before they’re judged. He has a super underrated track record.
I disagree completely with this video. Lauri can be traded next of season if Utah don't wanna keep him. Also the Jazz can go out for another star they have tons of picks and assets if they wanna excel their rebuild.
Fair point on having the assets (draft picks) to make all in type trades to accelerate the rebuild, I should have called that out. And yes, I agree he can still be traded, but it's not going to be at the same value teams were willing to pay for him this past year

The Jazz are not the Pittsburgh Pirates of Basketball (meaning a team treated like a farm league in the pros) and its a little naive to assume the offers were better then paying him.
[edit] I also think that this contract will likely become undervalued as we start to see these new inflated salaries created to satisfy the cap requirement.

I wanted the jazz to tank hard and try to capture the flag. But if the reports are right and the best offer was moody and picks I’m ok that they decided to keep Lauri. Especially with the flattened lottery odds. There are going to be risks either way and I would rather keep Lauri instead of trading him pennes on the dollar.
But ya could have gotten picks, players, gotten far better draft odds and cleared up cap for free agency. Seems like a terrible failure.
I agree. The commenters here don't get that Markkanen staying on Utah just isn't that valuable for the team. The Jazz is going to be mid at best in a few years and he'll be on the downturn before they start to get good.
Wrong. They have a nucleus and can build next year and the next. This was a 5 year plan for Ainge.
I kind of think they weren't keen on trading him because Markkanen likes being in Utah. Tough to find star players where this is the case.
Ainge was waiting for an offer they couldn't refuse.
If you draft well, you can contend. It's not a death sentence. To name a few, guys like Haliburton, Shai, Brunson fell outside the top 10.

The Jazz don't want to trade him at all. They just listen to offers that they can't turn down (tryna fleece teams). Also, Lauri isn't a bigman. He is a wing and played 3 all day long lmao.
On his new contract Lauri is the new Zack Lavine. Good scorer, fringe all star, always hurt, does not produce wins, and is a poor defensive player.
Dumb video. The Jazz have shown a player to build around. They will be very competitive this year and beyond.
So I keep hearing that the jazz are to good with Lauri to tank properly. But as a jazz fan that watched every game last year start to finish I think people don’t know or are forgetting how important Olynick, Simone, and Dunn were to the team. Even if the west didn’t get better I could see the jazz losing 5-8 more games if they replace the minutes those vets played with rookie minutes.
But your not taking into account the young guys (high draft picks) getting better. I think the Jazz will stay the same and maybe push for a playin spot in the playoffs
I think the Jazz will easily be able to trade him again in the off-season but this was the best opportunity for a team to plunder Golden State of its assets. The Warriors are going to try and appease Curry and will mortgage their future in doing so. If I was Ainge I would have tried my best to take every unprotected 1st I could get from Golden State while taking Wiggins back. Curry is in his late 30s and once he loses a step or retires they will be a lottery team..
That's why warriors didn't want to give up all the draft picks. Curry is getting old and so is green. Giving Utah all them picks and the warriors would be like Utah for the next 4-5 years and not making the playoff in those years
In theory trading Lauri in order to fully bottom out is the correct move. In practice there weren't any offers even close to being fair enough this offseason to go that direction. That's what every one of these conversations glosses over. These decisions aren't made in a vacuum. The best reported offer was Moses Moody and two crappy first round picks. You can't just gloss over that and pretend like we live in hypothetical land where the Jazz should have taken say 90 cents on the dollar in order to better position their future. You're blaming them for not taking 50 cents on the dollar in the real world.
Most likely scenario is the Jazz finish in the 5-8 range, they're going to play a TON of 1st and 2nd year guys, this year and with flattened lottery odds that's not terrible. If they get a bit of luck and move up in the draft they can keep Lauri. If they get unlucky (as they always do never once having moved up in the draft in franchise history) they can reassess and look to move Lauri next offseason for potentially higher return considering he'll be under team control for longer and teams like OKC or SAN may be in a more buy now mood. Either way pretending like Danny Ainge made a mistake because he didn't take a package commensurate in value to the Deni Avdia trade might be one of the most ill informed takes ever.
I'm gonna need some Jazz fans to help me because I don't see any logic behind this move. Giving Lauri this massive extension indicates that the Jazz will continue building around him, which is a poor idea given his ceiling as a player. If they plan to trade him in the near future, it will be difficult because of his contract and the second apron regardless of the increase of the salary cap over the next several years. If they plan to rebuild, having him on the team makes no sense at all became he does not fit the timeline. So, what is their plan ultimately?
He doesn't rely on his athleticism so projected to be in his prime for a long time. His contract dips in the 3rd year, which reveals what the big plan is. Jazz will probably let the kids play, with Lauri dropping in and out like a valve to cool down any hot streak. Talking about "ceiling" is premature. 3 years ago he was considered bit of a flop, and look at him now.
Danny ainge made the gobert and mitchell trades thinking that he'd be able to end up in a situation similar to what he had with the billy king trade. Unfortunately it doesn't really make any sense as to why he traded Mitchell at this time. Mitchell is only 28 and has at least 4-5 more yrs of elite play before declining. You could've traded gobert and retooled around Mitchell maybe attracted another star and used those assets to make more moves. Dont understand the jazz direction atp

Ainge did the same shit in Boston. Yeah, he extracted value from kg pierce and Terry but kept waiting, holding onto those picks when he could've snagged a butler or pg13. They won, but only after ainge left. They could've been in contention for more rings had ainge not just sat on those picks. Lauri deserves the money
Glad someone else has admitted that Cleveland trade was a fleece job. Utah should’ve traded Markkanen though. I thought they were tanking for Cooper now they are probably gonna end up around 7-9 range of the draft.
Cavs fan, and while I agree to an extent in terms of flexibility, I'd rather have Mitchell. Agbaji isn't even on the team. While I had hopes for sexton, he continues to prove his limitations. Lauri at the 3 didn't seem sustainable. If Mobley were bulkier, they could've traded Allen instead but a front court of Mobley and Lauri might've gotten outmuscled on the boards(even more so than the Knicks series).
Still think jazz got the slightly better deal, but I'm content with Mitchell, who's been incredible since coming to Cleveland. Had he not gotten injured, I could've seen him on this USA squad.
They should've traded Lauri to the Mavs for a 2nd round pick.

Jazz had to spend the money. CBA rules forced their hand. It’s a descending contract so it still gives flexibility in the future. Might as well give that money to Lauri who loves Utah.
It was also too hard to trade Lauri under his small contract because you couldn’t get equal compensation and still make the numbers work.

Keeping Lauri still makes Jazz one of the weakest teams in the West. Only team that I consider worst next year is arguably the Trailblazers. And odds are flattened.
Grizzlies will be back to full strength, Spurs got better, Kings got better. The rest of the West is stacked. Warriors are gonna waste a year of Curry’s window. Jazz will still be a tanking team next year.
I disagree with the small contract being a challenge in a trade. The small contract is perfect because you could trade for a couple cheap promising rookies and a bunch of draft picks which would be perfect for a rebuilding team. As they are now it's an awkward group of young and old players that is mediocre.

@@bear9322 Well teams can be creative in meeting the minimum salary requirements. There are usually a few old vets making way too much that teams want to offload.

Gobert was. Mitchell was. Bridges was. It's all relative.
Gobert is a 4-time DPOY winner. Mitchell has a couple of All-Star teams and an All-NBA selection and is one of the best 2 guards in the league. Bridges is an iron man and has a First Team All-Defensive selection. Pre-Brooklyn, he was one of the best perimeter defenders in the league and a DPOY candidate. They all have things on their resumé that you could ARGUE makes them worth that amount of picks compared to Lauri. Lauri had to change situations a couple of times before he finally became a truly good player.

The NBA is a strange league. People may think this a joke but who knows this could work out. Have to wait and see.

Jazz fan here and just my perspective on the picks from GS that would have come back in the lauri trade. If they traded lauri any swaps the jazz have in the next 5 years including GS swaps throw those in the garbage because the jazz are probably going to be bottom 5 for at least three if not more years depending on the lottery. And if GS gets to keep all their young players and gets a 27 year old all star I don’t see them being anywhere close to the lottery for the next 5-6 years unless they have a year with horrible injury luck. Which only helps the jazz if that year is one they have the pick and not a swap.
True but i don't hate the Lauri resigning but there is a chance the Warriors implode and Utah could have capitalized.
