I don’t usually comment on UA-cam, but this has really helped me. I bought a tele with vintage tuners last year and I’ve really hated them as I thought you had to wrap the string round the post first… cue lots of tantrums. This has clarified the process, thank you!
Having restrung a few guitars yesterday, this was relevant. Vintage tuners were so much easier to do! For B string I wrap down round the E post and then back the B post; E string I measure round the post and up to the G post. Gotta keep that gap of 2 pegs :)
I hope this video is helpful. I know how much I hated these tuners when I first got them but now they are my favorites. If you do it a different way please feel free to comment. I've subtitled this video in other languages as well if English isn't your first language. The string cutter/wider tool is this one - imp.i114863.net/JrKrqR (Sweetwater Affiliate Link) My strings of choice ► Buy it from Thomann - bit.ly/3fS1l9c
All you need to do for the last two tuners is pinch the string at the tuner in question, then move it back two tuners and cut where the string meets the tuner you are attaching it to, bingo there is your length measurement.
You know what video I've never seen; how feed your strings through the back of a Squier strat. The bridge block is magnetic, which makes it difficult to push through.
@@caseyspaos448 Tremolo bridge blocks aren't magnetically charged. In fact, zinc and brass blocks cannot hold a magnetic charge. If you've found that strings sometimes get stuck while feeding them through a trem block, it's probably because the tip of the string is jamming against a protrusion of material in the cavity.
Thanks for the video. I've been playing guitar for 35 years an never had vintage tuners. Just got my first set. They are awesome I'm tempted to change all my guitars over
I LOVE that classic video of BB King replacing a broken string ON STAGE during a PERFORMANCE, and just KEEPS PLAYING THE SONG! I think he was only able to do it because Lucille had old style tuners, and it would have been nearly impossible to manage to do the same thing with more modern tuners??
I love these tuners. I work on my own guitars and ALSO find them to be great if you need to do some work “under the hood” because you don’t need to kill the strings you have on the guitar. Just ease the tension and pop the string out from the top. The shape of the end of the string doesn’t change. Then once you’re done, carefully (so you don’t cross the windings) set the string back into the tuner and relighted to pitch.
I'm with you. I like these vintage tuners too. Good idea to make a video on a fundamental bit of knowledge that everyone should know. Gotta learn the basics.
I've just done my quickest ever string change with the vintage tuners on my Strat thanks to this brilliant video Shane. I always struggled so much before, especially with the high E popping out of the tuner but not with your method of pulling and holding the strings down. Simply brilliant and now I will be changing my strings more often
I'm so happy I found this Video, if I didn't I would've bought locking tuners so I don't have to bother with the string change of my new Strat. Saved my 80 bucks thanks!
I just replaced the PoS slotted tuners with Fender locking tuners with a hole in the middle of the post. Now I can set a luthier's knot on the strings, and the locks help prevent slippage on the strings, even with tremolo use. Now, my guitar doesn't go out of tune. Best upgrade ever.
It sure helped me after watching your video. The other nice thing about these tuners is, you can take the strings off and put them back on with little trouble. Like if you have to work on your guitar and get the strings out of the way.
Very timely - just put a “new” neck that came with vintage tuner on my tele yesterday. I didn’t install the strings like this way but now I know. Thanks !
Thank you for this video! I’m one with a MIM Strat & have been looking at it all wrong. Had a ‘95 Jimmy Vaughan & didn’t like the vintage tuners at all but your video just changed the entire approach to ‘em. Thanks again!!!
Great video, horrible tuners! Hahaha. I hate to be a negative Nancy here but oh my God, , just bought a Fender Vintera Telecaster, first time changing the strings , the first 3 strings are thicker so they popped out a little but I got them to stay in and hold properly. The G string wouldn't stay in, I would wind it, get tension on it, string it around the peg 3 times and it would pop out over and over and over, same with the B and high E strings. Finally got the G string in, only way I could get it to hold somehow was by turning the tuning peg the opposite direction. What a nightmare, changing strings for over an hour and only have 4 strings on.
Great idea of reversing the head so it renders the view from the right-hander's perspective (Even though I would have still followed it from the Left-Hander's view). I may have started playing in 1962, which it doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to come to the conclusion I'm Retired and have tons of time. I said that to say this...I use an electric screwdriver with one of the winders (like offered by Music Nomad, and D'Addario, not trying to show preference, I just don't recall any more right now...Hey...I'm allowed...I'm an Old F@rt, remember!?!?!?) that you fit in a variable speed electric screwdriver or variable speed drill or screwdrivers like the Snap-On Ratcheting Screwdrivers and just your personal preference of wire cutters. I've tried the stringwinders like Shane is using. I just find the method I just described not only more convenient, but quicker for me. Great Video!!
I wish I'd seen this last week when I first changed the strings on a guitar with these vintage style tuners. I was struggling and felt I could ahve used another hand. Couldn't understand the point of them, but you've cleared that up. So, the lesson is duly noted for next time, thanks.
Good video, just reviewed it as I was looking for a vid to share with someone before they tracked. As a side note, on the high E & B strings, no need to fret on the slack length. (Pun accidental, but left because, well, it’s funny…all you need to do is, pull taught, index it, pull BACK two tuner lengths, and cut at the destination tuner. That gives you your two tuner length, for anyone who is super OCD about this stuff. FWIW, I like a little more length on my uppers, to account for the usually placed string tree on Fenders. Nice vid.
Thanks man, I recently bought some Grover replacements for a blonde, Epiphone Casino (the Chinese version) and was a little worried about how to string these up; I really appreciate the instruction. Thx!
Thanks for this! I'm a beginner and I just changed my tele strings after snapping the B - although mine went in the sides, rather than down the machine heads?.. anyway apart from fighting with the wire cutters I did it! Proud of myself I used ernie ball super slinky 9s so I hope they'll be ok. I love the twangy country pickin' & Waylon Jennings stuff.
Vintage tuners are the absolute best. They never slip. For the B & E string, I take and fold over the end that goes into the tuner back onto itself about the distance of the depth of that tuner. That gives just a little more bite in the hole for when you start winding.
I've never had vintage style tuners on any of my guitars until I recently pieced a Hendrix strat together and thought why not. Although trying to string them up in a conventional way caused all sorts of problems and frustration. After doing some research on YT, as you said Shane very easy to do string changes! You just have to get that initial kink in the string otherwise they can slip (especially on the unwound strings). Thanks for sharing mate.
I restring exactly the same way - it's pure logic (I didn't get shown but maybe Brian S said to pre cut them) and yes I've always loved the vintage tuners. It also gave me the confidence to pre cut my strings when restringing all my other guitars - nylon and bass excepted.
Thank you so much have 2 guitars with vintage tuners eric johnson strar 1957 tele esquire reissue 1952 I think both get to the shop for work done i have never changed the strings i also have tooth picks for the b and e cheers
On the last 2 strings, I pinch the string and slide it back 2 pegs, then pinch it again when you're even with the tuner. Although I like a little extra length on the G for and extra wind or two down the peg. Helps me with my tuning stability.
Hi Shane, today I'm putting a Seymour Duncan little '59 in the bridge of my Squier classic vibe '60's stratocaster and strings. Something I should've done a long time ago. I should've bought it that way. Thanks for the string install even though I had it down. Peace 🕊️
usually i tend to leave more string especially on the G in case there only one string tree, that's because more string around the peg helps to keep the string lower and it's a bit like having an invisible string tree. this is particularly helpful for avoiding possible string buzz at the nut, especially if it's not perfectly cut
Handy snip tip, and love the mirror universe! There's vintage tuners stock on my Lead II, I'm very happy to have a Fender guitar back with these tuners since my old Tele long ago. Also a fan of those D'Addario Nickel Wound.
Thanks buddy great video had my Strat fir a while been chicken to restring it but your video done the trick ended up a real quick easy and cool method thanks again
Thank you for this. Ive always had gibsons and epiphones so ive never dealt with these tuners before. I wasted 2 sets of strings before i found this video.
Awesome...I've been using the 2 tuner spacing since '89. Us lefties are allright lol. Love the channel Shane been a fan for years. Love the keys to the store series...truly hope it becomes a regular. So much fun! Stay safe and keep having fun!
I'm a lefty and a telecaster nut and my newer tele came with the fender di cast tuners so I removed and replaced with split shaft tuners. I actually prefer them to locking tuners to be honest as they are so simple to use and the best thing is if you need to take off a string for some reason they hold the shape of the peg and pop back in.

Have you seen the Kluson Supreme tuners in your neck of the woods? They're vintage style, but have an 18:1 ratio, so they're a little more precise.
Great vid, have two guitars with this style of tuner and I do prefer them.

Just bought a 60's Fender Strat (vintage series) and had to watch this to figure how to restring it properly, thank you so much!
Been doing this wrong/badly for 20 years. Thanks!

I have a tip: press a penny down on the string slot and twist. It works if your having trouble with the string popping out.

Where did you get the neck.
Bugger me! said the lefty viewer from Canada who proceeded to watch the rest of the video in a mirror. Resist, Lefties!!!!! Great demo, Shane!
Thanks so much for this. I kinda hated these tuners but this system is so simple I wish I’d seen it earlier. Makes life much easier!
You helped me a lot. I did not pull the string back enough. Now it works better.
I recommend getting a quality pair of side cutters. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this video! I’m one with a MIM Strat & have been looking at it all wrong. Had a ‘95 Jimmy Vaughan & didn’t like the vintage tuners at all but your video just changed the entire approach to ‘em. Thanks again!!!
I feel the same about those tuners, hated them at first and now they are my favorite.
I'm restoring a 2007 MIM Strat and I just put vintage split post tuners in it. I had to get 10mm to 6mm adapters, but they look great now.
That's exactly how I string my guitars. I love the vintage tuners!
Thank you man, needed this for the third time that i have ever switched strings, and the first time for vintage pegs.
I just got an American performer tele with this style of tuners. My first with this style so your video came at the perfect time! Thanks Shane!
Perfect timing! Just about to change strings on my Squier Classic Vibe 50s tele. I've done it before but a refresher video really helps. Thanks!!!
Good idea to use the case as your workbench. I never thought to do that.
Thanks Shane, perfect timing. I am about to restring my Squire CV 70s Strat 😂
Great video, horrible tuners! Hahaha.

"Stay tuned for that!" Pun intended?
Great channel, man! Greetings from Germany!
This video brings back memories to that first video of yours that instructed me. lol
Thank you Shane. Both of these videos have been very helpful.
very VERY nice quick video; been playing for years and never seen a vintage style tuner before. Good stuff Shane; really helped me with my telecaster

My favourite tuner. I cut two and a half lengths for the first two wound strings then two lengths for all others.
Thanks man, I recently bought some Grover replacements for a blonde, Epiphone Casino (the Chinese version) and was a little worried about how to string these up; I really appreciate the instruction. Thx!

Great video. I did my head in last week trying for the first time on vintage tuners.
Doddle, cheers mate!
Just got a nocaster so needed a quick check on how to work these guys 😂
Shane i was still using that old video the first couple times i restrung my 50s classic vibe. Great stuff man thanks
I restring exactly the same way - it's pure logic (I didn't get shown but maybe Brian S said to pre cut them) and yes I've always loved the vintage tuners. It also gave me the confidence to pre cut my strings when restringing all my other guitars - nylon and bass excepted.

Pro tip: put a cocktail stick in the hole after the string is in to hold it in place. Makes it even easier. Love these tuners
These vintage tuners on redneF and Fender guitars are brilliant! So easy and quick to restring.
Hi Shane, today I'm putting a Seymour Duncan little '59 in the bridge of my Squier classic vibe '60's stratocaster and strings. Something I should've done a long time ago. I should've bought it that way. Thanks for the string install even though I had it down. Peace 🕊️
I have 2 tele's and a strat. all 3 have these. one of the tele's also has the staggered height, and i love those even more.
The Staggered ones are good. But you can also wind the string all the way to the bottom and get the same effect on a regular tuner.
usually i tend to leave more string especially on the G in case there only one string tree, that's because more string around the peg helps to keep the string lower and it's a bit like having an invisible string tree.

I agree there are one of the most stable tuners unless you go too locking tuners they are my favorite tuners Great Video.
Perfect tutorial, restringing my strat right now!
Thank you !!! What a mess ive made ...I didn't know what that hole is for in the midle of the pegs daaa 🙃
Thanx again Shane !
Thanks buddy great video had my Strat fir a while been chicken to restring it but your video done the trick ended up a real quick easy and cool method thanks again
Great video..........vintage and locking tuners are the only ones I use. Thanks for posting!
Nice! This helped out on a partscaster Tele build I just finished. Thanks!
Thank you! Superb tuners - this is a great improvement on other styles.
Thank you I was struggling the first time restringing my tele!! Extremely helpful
I totally agree, I can restring both my Strat and Tele (vintage tuners) faster than LP ✌🏼
thanks for the help
Thank you for this. Ive always had gibsons and epiphones so ive never dealt with these tuners before. I wasted 2 sets of strings before i found this video.
Brilliant Tutorial. Just done it very very easy
As always, great video Shane!
Flippin, flip ... finally got the B string but the high E is giving me hell. Can't seem to keep the end of the string from popping out.
Thank you sir! No more headaches!
You're welcome!
Very helpful video, thanks for posting.
Totally agree vintage tuners are the best! No sharp strings to bite you either
Answered all of my questions. Thank you, and excellent pro tip on the measuring string length
Awesome...I've been using the 2 tuner spacing since '89. Us lefties are allright lol. Love the channel Shane been a fan for years. Love the keys to the store series...truly hope it becomes a regular. So much fun! Stay safe and keep having fun!
Thanks mate you really helped me out with alot of stress and frustration with these tuners👍🏻
Thanks heaps Shane ... just about to get in my hot little hands the very last brand new Sunburst 1960's American Original Jag I could find anywhere online from right here in Aus via Black Dot Music in Armidale Mate ... a couple more layby payments to go👍I have quite the collection of guitars but never owned one with vintage tuners and was slightly puzzled with how they work ... sorted now thanks to you Champion! 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
On the unwound string I do a passover at the slit to lock the string more.
Got this tips from Glaser tele setup video
Shane, great video! Enjoy your quick to the point videos. Love these “vintage” tuners.
Best tuner style ever invented IMHO.
i guess I am kind of off topic but does anybody know of a good place to watch new movies online?
@Roman Kaiden i would suggest Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Roman Kaiden i use Flixzone. You can find it by googling =)
@Roman Kaiden Lately I have been using FlixZone. You can find it on google =)
"best tuner style invented". Man.. If you think that this system is better than the locking nut(not with a F. Rose necessarily) , or locking tuner. Ok. I Guess im crazy 🤣. I never thought that i could read such a bold phrase.
I do my best string changes with my guitars with vintage tuners! I only have one Strat that has the more modern style tuners and I do a horrible job when I change strings.😂😂😂
The place at 2:00 in is SO important! Oh boy I messed this up at first - you have to apply tension or the dang string will pop out.
So helpful! You are awesome!!
Thanks for the video flip for all of us Righties. My dumb brain understands everything now. 🤣🎸🤘
Please make video with this tele after string change😊🙏🏻 all about the sound
Man! That helped tons. Thanks Shane
Most people these days just call these 'vintage tuners' but that can confuse some people ('So you mean old tuners?'). Fender originally called them Saf-T Post tuners and they were modelled on Kluson's SAFETI String tuners.
Thanks so much for this, Shane!
Cheers!
While my guitar gently squeaks, 😁.
This is good advice but I'm gone the opposite way and given up on the vintage tuners I have on my Vintera. The high-E is an absolute nightmare. I've just order myself a set of locking tuners and will be replacing the vintage ones.
I always hated changing strings on my guitars, until I got a couple Classic Vibe guitars with these style tuners. SO much faster and easier than the stupid string-through tuners on all my other guitars! (And don't get me started on the damn old Jackson tremolo that requires cutting the balls off the strings! Nightmare licensed Floyd, if you ask me!)
Instead of guesstimating the last two strings, you could just run the string down, pinch it at the tuning peg, then move it down a peg and measure up two pegs for the cut. So for the high E, just run the string, pinch it, move it to the G string's peg, then cut it at the high E tuner. Works for me, anyhow. Sure, I could guesstimate, but I'm a bit anal and/or have undiagnosed OCPD.
Thank you! it was so easy haha
I think the keys are having a string winder and not cutting the string too short. I'm gonna use the two pegs approach from now on. Thanks, Shane!
My goal is to get three wraps. Doesn't always happen.
Thanks, just what I needed..
Thanks for the info. Very useful
I use to play 6 string guitar, but getting the e and b strings on these vintage tuning machines is such a pain, so now I play 4 string guitar.........🤣🤣🤣🤣
Actually I really like these style tuning machines.... no string ends to clip. But it does take some getting use to on the e and b.
Best non-locking tuner. Not sure why Fender doesn’t use them on everything.
Thank you, greatly appreciated!
I'll never forget the first time with the high e. Lmao.
