Do you think the PI was selfish?

Open mind and A LOT of patience.
I remember my utter shock and trauma 😂 when i witnessed the dark side of ACADEMIA withy own eyes. But seriously i believe a man has to have a moral code to go by at all times.

Absolutely… Remember to keep your options open to project yourselves.

Think positively, you may find a better PI, look around and there may be other labs/universities interested in your work and experience. It's good to go to seminars and conferences in the first year of your project to meet other people, network, find opportunities for collaboration. It's like an insurance if your mentors, unis, labs turn out to be a deception. If you are paying them fees, you are the client...

Indeed growing the network is a good way to build resilence.

Kinda mixed, I can understand the frustration, but always put yourself first.
