I did most of my PhD before 9am. No distractions, no conversation. Shared the lab with the cleaners. Coffee and chats after 9 slow you down.

When I finished my undergrad I did an internship with a research group. The professor at the group used to come in at 5am while most of his students came in at 9. I was always so inspired by his dedication.

@@Omar-kw5ui thank you for sharing your experience. I will see if I can do that when I start my research lab internships as well. I rather work at 5am with peace than after with so many people bossing around. Lol

Your $20,000 AFM story is like a PhD nightmare!
I also have a mistake to share related to lab safety. I was working alone in the lab almost had an electric shock in an aquarium because I dip my arm under seawater and the water was near to an electricity cable junction. I felt my arm muscle twitching and I couldn't imagine if the cable was any closer to water. I would have been dead...
Since then, I always make sure to ask every question related to lab safety and appreciate the importance of good rest before lab work.

When i have lab, i follow the same habit. Never do lab when youre hungry, tired or you feel your head is not wired like it should.

Thank you for sharing! You can save a life!
For the "Friend/Friendlier" thing I always think of the japanese example: When they work they are serious respectful and never let even a chuckle or giggle escape from their face, but when they are outside they are shouting laughing and smiling in front if everyone.
You may cancel plans with your friends 2 times in a row with no consequences, but if a friend is giving you lessons of some sort or viceversa, then you may not like to see them cancelled with a joke.
You may be friends with them, and they may think so too, but when you are interacting with them in the workplace about work related things then you are expected to be responsable about the work and other's time. It's politics, it's image, it's many things, but other perceive it as you respecting your job and your workplace.
I know you already know this all, but I felt like writing a piece! If you do not agree please answer! ;)

If you are finding it hard to put down your phone or to stop clicking onto social media on your laptop you might find a website/app blocker useful. Cold turkey (getcoldturkey.com/) is a really good one for your laptop internet browser and the likes of Freedom app, the Forest app or SelfControl are useful for blocking apps on your phone for a specified period of time. It has been life-changing for me as it essentially removes the willpower element of trying to put the phone down!
