Whilst I've enjoyed the epic Analogue Frontiers and Mister videos, I also like these old-style MLiG videos where you guys just talk about some games you're interested in, or that have some meaning to you. Even when some of them aren't very good! (I know things get much better with Sega Ages once M2 get on board)
Ask Yuji Naka's former co-workers what they think of him. Apparently, he's a bad case of "never meet your heroes", and it's no wonder Sega of Japan and Sega of America both had problems with him during the Genesis era. He'd later go on to screw over both the X-Treme team and a Dreamcast developer.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Don't forget that Balan's development was so tumultuous that it's driven a wedge between him and Naoto Oshima, and Naka hasn't been exactly gracious about it (that infamous Twitter photo comes to mind).
It's not the violence. It's supreme technical violence. It's the delayed violence. He doesn't just punch their heads off. He hits pressure points and infuses them with his ki and then waits and seconds later they explode. There are loads of violent shows but few have poetic violence of Fist of the north star. You come for the combat and stay for the drama.
No matter what the content or topic is, I always watch. You guys are amazing and capture the nostalgia and warmth that no other UA-cam channels capture.
Amazing video as always! I have a question for Coury, did you use the Composite cable with the PS2? Out of curiosity I tried both Virtua Fighter and Decathlete on my CRT with the RGB SCART cable and the image quality is 10x better.
Great as always!!! Good games, however, are relative to a Gamer's taste. Puzzle, Sports & Racing games get a bad rap, low coverage and sometimes a fair bit of hatred. Some simulation Sports & Racing titles are akin to RPGs in how you customize and then head into action, but that is almost never considered. Decathlete and Winter Heat are former STV-Titan arcade games and are in my opinion some of the best examples of Arcade-Style sports titles ported to the Saturn. In the case of Decathlete, I'm not sure if a Sports title tops it on the Saturn. Pickup, play, practice and master is the name of the game. The PS2 Sega Ages is a nice combination of 3 games, but Decathlete and Winter Heat more than stand on their own in my humble arcade loving opinion. Your channel is truly one of the best.
Very fun video! I have a bunch of these Sega Ages 2500 games and they are such a mixed bag. I'm really looking forward to your impression of the Phantasy Star 2 remake. I really enjoyed the Phantasy Star Generation 1 from this 2500 series.
What would really be awesome would be the review of the Sega Astro city mini consoles , especially the Astro city mini V which has many arcade / Saturn shoot ‘em ups on it . I wonder what the resolution specs compared to the arcade original and Saturn
Can’t say I really care personally for this series but I could listen to you guys talk about anything gaming related on this channel and I do! Your passion and knowledge is unparalleled and infectious.
The 2000s were seriously underrated in how much companies respected their IPs, that when they made remake's they actually stayed faithful to the originals. Today the word remake brings up so many red flags and it's not surprising to find out that usually entails changing content to make it more watered down or even censored. Hokuto No Ken would struggle to be made today, censorship laws alone in japan has gotten extremely strict. This can even be seen in their 2000s OVAs and movies, where it almost seems in the last few released the violence was completely cut from them. Which is funny when right after I watched the original series and the later OVAs couldn't compare to violence of the original series that aired on TV.
Now there are instances where the Japanese versions of games are more censored than the US versions, which is opposite of how it used to be. The TV anime in Japan is usually censored, but you can buy the uncensored version on Blu-Ray.
I have the complete collection of SEGA AGES.. but there are also SEGA Rally 95 and the original Virtual Fighter not on the 2500 collection for PlayStation 2 that I have, only sold in Japan!
Weird coincidence, I was listening to an insert credit podcast episode that talked about the sega ages 2500 series just an hour ago and then this came up in my feed.. it's a sign
Can’t wait for the next video in the series! I’m getting into the Phantasy Star games, playing through PS1 Generations now, so I’m curious to hear opinions on PS Generations 2.
Regarding language barriers, there are plenty of translation apps including Google and Bing that will overlay translations over any text in a chosen language. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing when trying to navigate or understand what's going on. Can't wait to see the Phantasy Star games.
I remember the Sega ages Golden Axe.......never played a game that was so bad that it made me fall asleep and my friend with me, playing co-op P.S Coury, quick question if I may. What's the name of your bookshelves you use for your gaming collection, asking cause I have over 3k games and don't have a great solution for keeping them in order anymore. Thanks my dude
I had never played it, but when I first heard of the Sega Ages series, I thought Golden Axe would be fantastic. I was crushed when I heard how bad it was.
Please don't ever change or update or anything to the theme song of this show, seriously, it's a *mood*. Too many UA-camrs decide to update their theme after a few years, and like... please don't. 😅
TV shows have been doing this for decades, too. I remember ALF and Quantum Leap did this. The updated version of the ALF theme was not bad, but the second version of the Quantum Leap theme sounded like a crappy MIDI version of the original.
Damn shame the SEGA Ages 2500 series never got released here in the States. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware of the reasoning for the exclusivity, but surely, SEGA and Sony Computer Entertainment America could've worked *SOMETHING* out.
The Sega Ages 'remakes' on PS2 were mostly pretty awful, especially the Golden Axe one. I got the VF2 one though, and like you say apart from the lower contrast it's very good - play thru S-Video if you can it seems to boost the contrast more?!? ✌️
The reaon why the colors in Virtua Fighter 2 look dull and washed out is because apparently the developers decided to use the version for projection screens instead of the version for crt monitors.
[Try4ce] I'm here! We've both just had a hard time juggling MLiG with freelance and other work this year, so there's been an unfortunate shortage of episodes from both of us. We stream every Sunday, so there you can see we're still both around! I'm also working on some episodes of my own!
Can't wait for your Phantasy STAR II AGES review. You have to see that new horrible character art. Why couldn't they bring Toru Yoshida to make the art for the remake?

The Sega Classics PS2 collection annoyingly had Alien Syndrome removed from the PAL Version so it could achieve a lower age rating.
Nice, it's been a while but your videos are always worth waiting for!

Wasn't expecting "future Balan Wonderworld director Yuji Naka", that cracked me up. 😆
Hokuto no Ken ost is a masterpiece.
Been waiting for this series to continue! Hopefully the Rare after Nintendo series will be continued someday too!

I always loved sega early polygon games. They were always a highlight to play in the arcade like last Bronx or die hard. There style was so unique.
>”Programmed by, future Balan Wonderworld director, Yuji Naka”
oof.
Great video! Can't believe it's already been three years since the last one
Love the intensity displayed on the last part 😅. “Of course I’m not ending this video with Decathlete you heathens”
I see Fist of the North Star in the thumbnail, I automatically hit the like button
nice video, always loved the game black belt, did not realize they brought it back to life
I’ve been waiting 3 years for this
Amazing video as always! I have a question for Coury, did you use the Composite cable with the PS2? Out of curiosity I tried both Virtua Fighter and Decathlete on my CRT with the RGB SCART cable and the image quality is 10x better.
The VF2 footage looks like limited range RGB being displayed as full range... Though i dunno if that's what happened here

i believe, that saturn port of virtua fighter 2, is a port unbeatable. best version ever.
One of the best ways to play VF2 is at the arcades ... in Yakuza games :D
Had no idea there was a Decathlete collection. And had no idea it looked so much worse than the Saturn and Dreamcast.

Great video! Though @23:06 Winter Heat was 1997 not 1987 ;) and it's very modest of you to say that you're "not only very good at VF2" heh
In fact, Outrun is pretty good, almost as fun as the original

Hokuto one is bad, but having OG Mark game is great. OG cart is quite rare, but modern 2000s remake is garbage.
