I'll probably never hear the end of this if I don't say it here. Yes I say Connectix as "Kinects", similar to Modern Vintage Gamer. I almost re-recorded it to match Steve. I always figured it was a clever homophone for a company famous for it's app, Speed Doubler and RAM Doubler. Steve probably is more correct, although he also called OS X Jaguar, "Jagwire".

Not sure what you mean. MVG says it right.
Now, what’s with the thumbnail using the word “illegal”? I’m inclined to skip this clickbait out of spite. As someone forced to sell his sealed copy of Virtual Game Station along with the rest of my decades-old original-owner big box PC collection when displaced by an EF4 tornado, I know the story well enough to know that you intentionally misrepresented it.
Not only was Connectix VGS not illegal, it literally set the legal precedent. Sony tried to claim it was illegal and lost in court. Meanwhile, the DMCA happened and Yuzu promoted using it to play Tears of the Kingdom one day before release… which required encryption/decryption keys in clear violation of the DMCA. It was the cornerstone of Nintendo’s case that it was not intended for fair use exceptions to the DMCA.

Well, I watched it. Interesting to see you also grabbed it early like I did. ;) Also, I have that same Mac Server you show next to it. Does yours have the optional Zip drive + bezel like mine? It looks like it’s in great condition too. When I look on eBay they all have cracked handles though somehow mine has escaped that fate.

@@emmettturner9452 that sucks about boxed copy, mine is lost or the sands of time, I have the disc still, or better worded my brother does.
Titles and thumbnails are malleable, and making exciting titles is part of the game. I try to adhere to the concept of "clickbait for good," as I'm always trying to educate the user and not try to mislead. I've definitely had salacious title ideas and nixed them. This one uses Betteridge's law.
Hopefully, anyone who watches it realizes that emulation was established as legal because of the Connectix v Sony case. Not only was copying the BIOS for reverse engineering legal, but the trademark wasn't infringed on either. I probably could've tied in the idea that Steve was promoting something that was legally gray at the time. There are already things I wish I would've done differently in this video, but that's how it goes. Not every title I have is as attention-grabbing as this one, but I had the receipts, and hopefully, that came across.

Duckstation is the better option for PS1 emulation over the Mednafen port that OpenEmu uses. It's the most actively updated and has the best suite of graphical enhancements.
Something you didn't touch on that I think is interesting is Sony's change of attitude over the years towards emulators. The Playstation Classic mini console Sony released back in 2018, while not well regarded for it's quality, used the open source Playstation emulator PCSX ReARMed (a fork of PCSX optimized for ARM CPUs). Keeping in mind that PCSX was contemporary to the Playstation 1's life cycle, with versions of the emulator being released concurrently with commercial PS1 game releases.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  10 місяців тому +2

Yup, mentioned the graphics on duck station. I didn’t even think about the mini PlayStation and the ruckus it caused since it’s in a commercial product. That’s an interesting point. I’d be curious if Sony’s higher ups who oppose emulation even understand what their console does… I also didn’t touch on the rumor that the PlayStation 3 used VGS code but that’s impossible to confirm.

I used to have a buch of Connectix products, including this one! One correction, when I went to their booth at MacWorld Expo way back in the early 2000s, I'm sure I remember the Connectix people in their vendors booth pronounced it "Connect-icks," not "kinetics."
Edit, Steve Jobs pronounces it correctly at 2:52

I think when the first disc systems came out, most people became a lot less sympathetic to the idea that emulation was all about piracy because it no longer required specialized [and stigmatized] hardware to load a legitimate retail copy of the game on a computer.
Like in the cartridge era, console manufacturers could do the doublespeak where "most people don't have cartridge readers so they'll have to download roms from the internet which is illegal" and "cartridge readers should be illegal because they can be used to make roms that get uploaded to the internet", but you 100% cannot make the same argument about a CD-ROM drive.
The argument turns around from "Nintendo doesn't like emulation because you're not paying for the game so you're getting something for nothing" to "Sony doesn't like emulation because you're not paying for the *system*? fuck 'em, i paid for the game didn't i"

Indeed, my PSX ISOs are self ripped games my brother still owns.
Somewhere on his shelf is a copy of all the games in this video. I paid for Crash Team Racing and Jet Moto 3, I figure it’s shouldn’t be anyone’s business but my own what I do with them 25 years later (assuming it’s not distributing them). It’s entirely possible for someone to be emulating 3 generations of Sony PlayStation games and doing it legally. I’m not going to pretend I dumped the bios, but my brother has my old PlayStation with the RCA jacks to this day.

actually, i remember when i first heard of Emulation with NES games in early 2008, But dang emu was being considered in 1999? thats crazy. I bet even earlier than that because i know few arcade engineers actually were trying to crack the code back then to play arcade games from PCB to a rigged-up Tandy or IBM CPU with their tech skills to play "test" games on alternate CPU's back. Nowadays Emulations is considered to be a platform to retro gaming. so In the end Copyright, isn't so copyrighted as it was intended to be back then.

The one part of Connectix's story that everyone forgets is that once Mircosoft acquired them in 2003, they were using their emulation engineers to create the emulator that would be used for the original Xbox to be played on the Xbox 360. If Microsoft never acquired them, the Entertainment and Devices division would have never likely started working on the back compat program for the Xbox One that would only get further enhanced by the Xbox One X and the Series X
So these guys playing fire with Sony, opened the door to one of the biggest leaps forward in game preservation, and making the original games play better than they ever did on original hardware without touching the original code to do it

This comment is only marginally related to the video, but personally, I've always found it easier to use stand-alone emulators rather than one big inclusive front end with various 'cores". A stand-alone emulator can have settings and options tailored specifically to the system in question, without getting bogged down in other stuff. It's easier to troubleshoot problems if you only have to worry about system specific settings and not a bunch of global settings as well. Beyond that, I guess giant programs with cores just seem messy to me, whereas stand-alone emulators seem neater. I like to be able to archive everything for the future, so that I can re-install it even without an internet connection. That's easier to do with a stand-alone program, as big front end programs NEVER come with the latest updates. They either need to be installed right from within the program (requiring a net connection), or downloaded separately.
The exception to this is when an emulator includes multiple systems from the same line. Like KegaFusion emulating the SG-1000, Master System, Game gear, Genesis, Sega-CD and 32x. However it irks me to have to use Mednafen just to get decent Atari Lynx emulation.

If I recall right, they were making in the tens of thousands a month from Patreon, they settled out of court. Nintendo's legal team probably figured out an angle as they sued on the grounds of breaking the encryption of games was illegal. That was legally untested, but they likely knew that some of the devs facilitated piracy at some level like downloading roms or distributing them and it'd be revealed in the discovery phase. Rather than fight it, Yuzu folded. Probably the best move for emulation as they were not the organization to fight it.

To be far back in the late 90's when I was a kid getting my first PC with a cd reader, my first thought was that it would be able to play PlayStation games somehow; so i feel its just a fundamental concept. I'm glad to see that they actually already did have the power to do it even then so i wasn't a foolish child to assume the PC could achieve console emulation

I was able to emulate other consoles like Gameboy and SNES tho on my PC in the early 2000's but N64 and PlayStation i couldn't get running on PC emulators properly till the like 2007+ due to not having any beasty GPUs but to imagine macs were running PS1 in 99 is crazy... At least my BlackBerry Q10 could run Playstation 1 games in 2013 which was impressive since it was certainly no iPhone.

Actually Conectix WON the case. Sony then wanted to settle and then offered to buy the rights to the emulator code. EMULATION IS LEGAL. The code in Virtual Game Station was all Connectix code and used no Sony Code. Connectix did dissassemble the Playstation Bios by copying it from a playstation they purchased to a computer, but this was ruled fair use as they were not selling it or mass copying it but instead studying its functions to write their own version of a program that did something similar.
Fun Fact: Even though Nintendo claims it is illegal on their website, but if it were, their Virtual Consoles on the Wii, Wii U, and Switch would be illegal as they are indeed emulators.

It did manage to get boxed copies in some retailers but had others orders cancelled. If I recall right, since it enhanced games it supported much fewer games.
The Dreamcast version never hit the original goal and had only 3 supported games and required a separate copy for each game. I actually tried to buy bleem at the time for the Dreamcast but couldn’t get an order and had it cancelled.I think that was 2000 probably from outpost.com. And that's why Yuzu's profiting off of the emulator _wasn't_ the part Nintendo was suing over. That's probably the most wildly misunderstood part of the lawsuit. Rather, they were arguing Yuzu was profiting off of copy-protection circumvention tools. In that sense, the lawsuit was very narrow in the parts that had a chance to fly in court. However, they swung wide and a lot of emulator developers dropped out of the game in fear over it.
The rumors of the death of emulators is greatly exaggerated.

    • @dmug

I didn’t get into Yuzu, the other part is Nintendo’s lawyers while doing fact finding probably knew if during discovery they’d also find team members of Yuzu aiding or facilitating piracy too. Thumbnail is a little clickbait-y inaccurate. I don't know if I'd call it 'illegal' since they did reverse engineer it and win the case against Sony. Since they settled the appeal and Sony bought it out, that's the only grey area for legality. The big difference now is that since Yuzu was open source, and the case was only against the parent developers' LLC company, forks of Yuzu have already sprung up and will just need new developers to continue it.

    • @dmug

You can sue for an extremely wide range of reasons at the risk is frivolous lawsuits. Likely, Nintendo's lawyers realized during the discovery phase, that the developers of Yuzu committed or aided software piracy which would then be revealed.
They also sued not on the grounds of emulation as whole but breaking the encryption on the games which may or may not be piracy. This would have been extremely expensive to defend as it'd require employing a team of technical legal contractors to assist the legal team's defense. Nintendo didn't win legally speaking, but swung a bigger stick as they had more money. So no legal precedence was set.

There's nothing truly misleading here. This is the story of the how Connectix was sued by Sony as emulation had never been tested in the courts. Sony thought it was illegal.
