Are you sure Missing Link is about the number scheme? It makes way more sense that it would be about being the evolutionary “missing link” between the first toys and toys of today. In the same way that people say the missing link would explain how land mammals came from fish creatures. The missing link Optimus fills that evolutionary stop gap between an 80s toy and a 2020s toy

In my opinion , 86 movie characters is the line. Before that, everything is an extreme nostalgic State. After that, we're getting updates already for these molds and sooner or later they will do a generations G2 Megatron and that'll take care of green and purple Megatron as well as the combat hero versions and those will be good enough. Meanwhile, for Armada, they're already tackling remakes for those

    Armada kid here:
You will be absorbed... accept your fate.
But seriously, speaking personally, I felt a huge sense of nostalgia upon picking up the Legacy Armada Starscream toy. I played with the original a lot as a kid, and honestly? The thing that got me was the transformation, felt like an advanced version of the original. Of course, therin lies the problem with Missing Link Micron Legend; a lot of what it does has been done with the Legacy updates. At this point, I'm good with my Legacy versions.
Which is probably for the best, because good luck getting the brand to acknowledge the Unicron Trilogy these days. Book comes out of the history of Transformers. G1, Beast Wars, Movies. Takara tells its story of the history of Transformers. G1, Beast Wars, Movies. Asking for a Missing Link Micron Legend is likely a tough sell to the companies, given the narrative they like to push. I feel like those Legacy figures are probably as good as we're gonna get.
Still waiting for my Retro Armada releases, Walmart. At this point, we're likelier to get Retro 2007 figures than Retro Armada...

  • @ArcheTelos
    @ArcheTelos Місяць тому +1

I feel like once you start getting out of G1 you start losing some of the novelty of Missing Link. The thing is, just due to the general jank of G1, the toys tended to look very different from the cartoon. And then, for decades after, future updates of those characters would strive to more closely resemble the animation models, and homaging the toy basically just boiled down to choosing the toy colors over the cartoon colors. So to go all in on toy-accuracy over animation accuracy, to physically remake the toy you remember playing with rather than the character you saw on TV, it felt like filling in a previously unexplored niche. But as you go later in the franchise, you start to see a more concerted effort at show accuracy/toy accuracy. You can put Missing Link Prime next to Earthrise Prime and see two totally different designs, but if you stick a hypothetical Missing Link Hot Shot next to Legacy Hot Shot they would just be two different takes on the same design.

I mean, some Armada figures getting Missing Link treatment is great. However, it'll be good to see more G1 figures. Also since this is Takara, not Hasbro it would be nice to see a G1 Megatron. Since Japan has different toy gun laws. But so many classic characters to choose from. Hopefully Ironhide and Ratchet will have heads, and of course we'll get seekers (Groans worldwide heard from collectors, Not more Seekers!). Armada Missing Link will be nice though. Okay I'd be down for G2 Megatron and Machine Wars Starscream as Missing Link figures. Clench as well. Armada Tidal Wave would also be great as I miss not having to partsform him if I didn't want to. And he's too big. He's not in scale for the video game anyway so just make him a bit smaller and use that to put a few finishing touches on the set like a back cavity cover. Maybe have made the Burning Megatron parts a full figure as well. Have the carrier parts come from somewhere other than the actual hands. But that's pretty the problem with every titan. They could all stand to be a bit smaller to reallocate the budget better and "fix" anything that needed more work in general.
Ultra Magnus, Galvatron, Sixshot, Shockwave, Star Saber, Dia Atlas, Deathsaurus, Star Convoy, Thunderclash, Pyro, Armada Scavenger, Energon Wing Saber, Overlord, Fangry, Horribull, Squeezeplay, Doubledealer, Devastator, Raiden, Landcross, Liokaiser and a few others. Many I loved the originals as a kid and others are ones I wished I had once I knew about them. Sure I have a bunch of these updated that aren't too different from the originals but they still might not be what I was looking for. I'd still rather fully updated figures but I do still have a soft spot for some G1 designs.

Overload I'd say has a bigger chance than some non character figures, since he is an Optimus Prime combining Partner. If they did a Missing Link Armada Optimus Prime I could see them doing Jetfire and Overload. They don't seem to be doing that for the Legacy Evolution one but for one built on the nostalgia of the original, I could absolutely see them doing the combiner partners.

One possibility that wouldn't be as flashy as better articulation but would definitely expand the possibilites and sell to collectors: GPS victims with better plastic. I mean, engineering also includes choice of materials.
On another note, I think Missing Link as a concept only really works for G1: the very first generation brought to modern standards. However, if we later rebranded it (something as Upgrade or Reformat, for example), THEN I think we could focus not only on Armada, but any fan-favorite character and/or mold.

Weird golf ball textured skin, Leo and Don's head sculpts swapped around for no reason, inaccurate shades of light green and dark brown used for Raph and Don's skin, and terribly dated joints for the shoulders and hips, with visible pins that would look bad on a mid-2000s era action figure, let alone ones from 2024.

I think the entire Unicron Trilogy would be the most likely outside of G1 to get the missing link treatment. A lot of figures from that era did not get decent articulation because of hindering gimmicks.
Beast Wars is also another series where I think missing link could work. The articulation was really good for the time but there were things the original toys could not do that I always wished they could. Legacy Silverbolt is a good example of that but there is something that feels off about him. Like I love his improved articulation but they changed some things about the original toys that didn't really need the update. Just give me something that looks like original figure but has the articulated wings of the Legacy figure.
Also while a lot of Beast Wars toys had articulation in robot mode ironically their beast modes couldn't move at all some times. If they can some how add articulation in beast mode there's your missing link.

I would like to see the return of some of the better gimmicks and idea, along with new characters, with updated designs of classic characters. That would bring in the kids as well as us old fogeys. Transformers Classics was a good example of that. It kept the classic characters fresh but something today's kids might find interesting. Then have a separate line for collectors if they want the old characters.
But while the Combiner gimmick comes and goes, bringing back and refining Mini-Cons or the various X-Masters (Head/Target/even Power) with new takes on those old ideas would be really cool. That's what I like about Energon. It took the Mini-Cons and Combiners and tried to find new things to do with the combination/Powerlink idea. I'd also like to see the return of organic animals alongside the mechanical stuff, maybe the Mini-Cons actually become smart tools, or be real daring and find a way to make the Pretender shell idea work. All this while still coming up with new gimmicks and play patterns to really push transformation and general toy engineering. I love nods to my childhood, especially positive ones, but while the seeds of the future may be buried in the past, to coin a phrase, the future still requires growth and change. If any toyline should understand that, it would be Transformers.

Technically still G1, but the talk about the movie toys got me thinking, why stop with existing figures? Do some of those famous scrapped prototypes as Missing Link. G1 Arcee and especially G1 Unicron would sell like hotcakes.

g2 megatron is not takara. thats the issue . but maybe we got laser optimus. missinlink is not for the us market yet. that way we got the plastic g1 optimus from legacy instead

One character from transformers cybertron that deserves a missing link is deluxe scattershot and wingsaber and another machine wars character who deserves the missing link treatment is sound wave but armada needs missing link treatment too sideways sideswipe megatron the supreme class Optimus and overload would be awesome so would smokescreen and demolishor and cyclonus and hot shot would be awesome but the one toy from the 2000s who needs a new toy would be energon hotshot

Other than G1, the only obvious answer is Armada, which had terrible articulation, worse than Beast Wars, in order to have all their gimmicks... and you had that at the end of the video lol

My issue with creating Missing Links for the real bricks like Blur is that if it keeps the idea of maintaining the appearance of the original figure, then you'd just end up with a more articulated figure that still looks like a brick, and looks very little like its animated version. For a moment, I thought about a Missing Link Ironhide and Ratchet, before coming to a similar conclusion. These are characters that need something beyond Missing Link.

If you want toys that look like the cartoon, you're better off sticking with Studio Series 86 and Legacy. That's not what Missing Link is. It's intended to take the original Takara/Hasbro toys that many of us had as children and upgrade their articulation. Period. They are supposed to look like their vintage toy box artwork, not their animated counterparts.

@@Rocket1377 That's my point. A Missing Link Blur would have more articulation, but its still going to look like a knock-off of a Duplo figure.

Ok, mostly pisstake, but missing link rescue bots. That series debuted 2011 so over a decade. The toys were made for babies and toddlers now those babies and toddlers are into their teens and might like a better version of their first transformer toy.
Also hasbro/takara seems to have forgot the longevity of the franchise depends on making new fans. They need to devote a lot, A LOT more budget into quality stuff for the younger crowd. Rather than re-releasing that same shitty cyberverse starscream over and over.
