I did the 14 peaks (about 13 hours) nearly 60 years ago. As a birthday and 40th wedding anniversary celebration, we are staying a few days in April in Blaenau Ffestiniog. My wife wants me to take her up Snowdon. I had forgotten one could bypass Crib ful.Goch, as I had never done that, but it's a relief as I was worried about my wife going over that, so this is very help
That’s a great achievement in 13hrs and I’m yet to do the Welsh 3000’s I need to add it to my list of things to do. Yeah that’s wise not going up that way but I’m sure she’ll be fine on this route. It’s a really good route to get up and no drops. My gf doesn’t like drops either but she’s obviously fine on this. Only tricky thing is the parking at the bottom…you need to book and it’s pricey now.
That was a really cool adventure. It's really nice to see old friends. That looked like a really great hike. If I ever make it to England, it will definitely be on my list of things to do. Dwayne
Only just spotted this comment sorry for the delay. Yeah great to see an old friend as it’s been about 8-10 years I think so glad I got to see him when he was over. Snowdon is a lovely hike and awesome views so definitely one to see if you do.
Old video but im only just seeing it. Thanks for the brilliant content. If your looking for an awesome wild camping spot, llyn dulyn is a boss place to go, nice views, full of epic history, has a bothy, and theres also a tonne of hikes in and around the dulyn itself.
To be fair the Llanberis Path is the longest route up Snowdon and even though people call it the “tourist route” that’s just because it’s popular. Now because it’s easy as it’s a right slog
Not a surprise, but blimey the cafe at the top has changed a lot in the last 30 years sinceI last went inside! Last time I did it was up the Pyg Path and along Crib Goch, then after summit along Watkin path to Y Llweddbefore turning down and end up on otherside of Llyn Lldew from the Miners, before the joining Miners to Pen-Y-Pass. Not sure the path off the Watkin at Y Llweddbefore has a name?
The Pyg track is a much better route so you can go up and down that or up that and down the miners as they start and stop at the same point. Parking is tricky at the start it’s expensive. If you want a slightly different route and easier too, there’s also the Rangers Route. That joins up to the Llanberis.
when i done snowdon kris i took the path which went around the left hand side 15 yr ago and i remember saying to our kid three quarters of the way up looks like someone having a fire and our kid saying its the clouds ye pratt lol and then i thought oh yes but loverly hike up mate and now im 56 yrs of age and in to wild camping i wonder if you could do a wild camp on there kris that would be good
Sorry to hear that, hope you can still get a little buzz by seeing others hitting the hills and reminding you of your climbs up there too. There’s still a train up there too so a great way to get up there and still get the views of the summits once again!
Watched this video about a month ago followed this exact route up and down even the bit when you was coming down going off track we followed that part was a amazing day and can't thank you enough for this video
Love that! How did you find it? I was back there again yesterday leading a group of 19 guys for their mental health charity although conditions were pretty brutal with torrential rain, thunder and lightening at the start and clag but in the end it cleared up as we were descending so all good.
@@krisgleave absolutely loved it was my first time climbing Snowdon and done it with two friends and we couldn't have asked for a better day plus after all the information from your video we had no worries or surprises as we know what to expect. Weather was lovely and blue clear skys so we was blessed for our first trip there. We hit the summit for half 8 and only had to share it with about 10 people so all around amazing day and it's got us planning our next hiking trip and can't wait for it
Sounds awesome glad it helped and you had a good day. You did it the right way setting off early and it being quieter as mid morning it can get super busy
Aah thanks Stacey! I’ve still not been up there yet but I will over the next couple of months I’m sure. Just need to get myself over there with low wind one day. I’ve been up the Pyg lots and still a good route up there. Just a nightmare with the parking hey
I did the miner on the way back down from crib goch, such a long way more than Llanberis, i did the rangers too, i wanted to go on the ridge left side on the miners but my partner seem to have lost interest for snowdonia, too busy all the time for his taste 🤷♀️ the rhyd ddu would b a nice experience too, well can get everything how we want it 😂
It does look good on the ridge I haven’t been up there myself either I really need to go soon. There are some great routes up Snowdon. The Rangers is one of the quieter routes but had some lovely views once you go past the train station and overlook the water.
Loved this video, Kris. I will try to do the PYG for the first time this year before December. The ridge you asked about after the train went by you after you summited is Rhyd Ddu..£4/6 parking. my favourite track to walk. I often think about going up Rhyd Ddu and coming down Ranger or Vice versa, but Rhyd is just at my peak level of ability with heights.. Great video. I've still not wild camped yet. I just need to realise no one is going to join me and go alone but I'll get there..
I missed this comment only just spotted it. Aah brilliant for the name of the ridge I need to check it out as it looks awesome and can’t believe I actually never looked up that way before considering over been up Snowdon over 40 times haha. The Ranger is a nice route too as starts from a little railway and nice reflection in the water at the bottom of the opposite peak. Get yourself out on your wild camp haha. It’s tricky this time of year with the weather and all the hours in a tent but you’ll enjoy it.
Ah ye, I did go up Ranger once, but I came down the same way. Then I found Rhyd Ddu! 40 times! It Just goes to show what a great place it is from a quick but rewarding hike or a practice mountain you used it for, for your killimonjaro climb. With all the different routes it draws me bk every year. Cheers for that, yeah there would be a while in the tent this time if year.. might be next year 🤔. Take care bud.
@@michaelheyes7324 get yourself out haha. Do it once and you’ll be hooked. Just stay more local or somewhere closer to your car for the first one. But get yourself out
Aah thank you. Kilimanjaro was ace but a long time ago now, back to 2010 when I did it to raise money for a charity and cause very close to my heart. Awesome experience.
Hi Jay, apologies I’ve had a little break for YT. How did the hike go? Yes I worked for Bupa at the time as we raised money quite a few times for them.
@krisgleave No worries. Yea it went really well I took my auntie up the Llanberis and down the rangers but their is a path that cuts through the mountains that leeds back onto the Llanberis it was a great walk. A was shocked at how much the weather changes on the way up. One minute it's 18°c next minute it's -5 and snowing
@jaywhitney789 haha yes it does change a lot in the mountains. Typically for each 100m you ascend it’ll drop a degree in temperature and often increase similar with wind speed too. The rangers is always overlooked but it’s a lovely route isn’t it. Great views over the lake and back to the little train station. Sounds like a good day
Its probably the most popular route up the mountain, but its certainly not the easiest. Its all on rock, much of it heavily worn by the now, millions of visitors over the years, and in wet weather, its very slippery. My choice for the easiest way up the mountain, is the Snowdon Ranger, as its all on a very easy to follow gravelly rock. Its pretty exposed to the prevailing weather, but its still the safest way up the mountain.
It’s definitely my preferred way of going up as the shortest and has great views too but agree it can be challenging in wet weather. Always best to go early too so it’s not as busy. The Rangers is a nice route I agree….ive only been up that way once when I did a charity hike (on my channel under CAFT) and it’s really quiet too. Far better than the Llanberis and better to park too.
Aah good to hear, how did you find it? I led a couple of groups up Snowdon a couple of months ago and we got the Sherpa bus too…first time. It’s great isn’t it
Just completed Scafell Pike via the Wasdale route for my first mountain. Looking at doing this route next up Snowdon. Wondering if this would be comparable in terms of difficulty? I'm aware it's a bit longer.
Yeah you’ll be fine with that. Well done on you first hike. Your route up Scafell is quite a quick route so yes the Pyg Track will take you longer. I advise going early to avoid the queues of people at the summit as it does get busy especially this time of year. Pyg Track up and the Miners Down is a good way to go and easy to navigate too. The path down to the miners you’ll fine quite steep but you descend quickly and then a long more or less flat path back. Good luck
really enjoyed your video, I've done the ranger path up and down a couple of years ago with a bunch of work colleagues found that to be not to bad, Looking to do Snowdon again soon but with the wife this time, what route would you recommend for her 1st time on Snowdon, she has done Helm Cragg in the lake district, not as big as Snowdon i know but still a bit of a strenuous climb 🙂
Sorry for the delay only just got around to comments as had a busy few weeks. Rangers is a great route up as it’s quite steady and nice views. The Pyg track is the shortest route up and is steady up with a few places you need to use your hands but not bad. I’d recommend going up that way and down the miners. The miners follows the same path as the Pyg for a while and then goes steeply down but only short. Then it’s mostly flat all the way back. Good luck.
I did this last week but miners and the pyg! Would definitely prefer the other way as it wasn’t easy on the knees! Is the sharp mountain on the other side of the tarn, y lliwedd? The horseshoe hikes including there look amazing!!
It’s a good route isn’t it but always prefer going up the Pyg and down the Miners. The miners is mostly flat when you get to the tarn and an easy walk back to the car park. I believe the ridge going up there is Y Gribin and yes the path to the left is Y Lliwedd which I’ve never done so definitely have to get up there soon. Looks ace doesn’t it.
Did this 2nights ago, got very lucky with a parking spot at that hostel across the road.. not sure if that was allowed but noone coming out to move us on at 21:00 😌
I've done both PYG and Miners tracks in the past as well as the Llanberis and Watkyn paths. Rhyd Ddu is next on my list. Great video by the way. What brand is your blue jacket in this video as I'm looking for something similar. Thanks
Thanks Gareth. I need to watch the video back to see but I think it was the Mountain Equipment Aerofoil or something like that. I’ve sold it now as needed a bigger size but have another in a lighter grey…it’s the only colour I could get. It’s not waterproof just wind proof but super lightweight.
Anyone going back via a different route should be aware that the Ranger's path leads you out a long way from anywhere, I found out the hard way. You can leave it near the end and walk to Llanberis, but it's a long, long way down
Great video thanks. We did Llanberis route in the fog on Tuesday .. not to be underestimated, it’s a long way up there and there are several very steep sections. Live Snowdon!
Yes, it’s classed as the tourist route however it does just go up and up constantly and is the longest route up. I’ve done that very route about 30 times now however prefer other routes up there. Hope you managed to get a bit of a view from up top.
Ooh it’s expensive that isn’t it. Although still great thing for people who are unable to do the hike but they can still appreciate the views from the top
