I've recently ordered a RG35XX, and after watching this one... I think I'll enjoy the StockOS for now before upgrading to the GarlicOS.

First time visitor to your channel, really good video, subscribed. Loving the 35XX and have pretty much thrown myself at GarlicOS updating every time there is an update. Liking the combination of RetroArch based tweaks I can make to settings but then just a nice easy front-end where I can pick up and play once it's to my liking.
Thanks so much! Yeah, it's crazy comparing it to the RG350M I bought 2 years ago for twice the price... I like the RG35XX so much more. Funny how much the handheld market has evolved and GarlicOS keeps making this handheld better almost everyday!

@@RGGeek This is exactly my situation. I have an RG350m with Adam image installed. And I have the grey RG35xx. I'll keep one and give the other to my 11 year old Nephew for mostly Pokémon.
When I look at the price still today the RG350m seems the better machine. But I do get a lot of nostalgia from the grey 35xx, and I think I prefer the vertical setup.
Can't decide which one to keep. What are your thoughts if you compare them? Are you using Adam image?
The 350m is still like £90 on a Anbernics website. Vs less than £50 for the 35xx.
Obviously taking into account a fortune for shipping for either one.

Awesome video dude! For now I’m more inclined towards the stock OS, as GarlicOS can’t seem to detect some of my PS1 games (it could be me) as well the occasional bugs 😅

Same, some ps1 games cant play on garlic os
On Garlic OS the Bios folder needs to be in the Roms folder.
I had the same problems. Garlic gamefolder is PS. On stock OS its PS1. So you need PS inside of Roms. Also it is neccessary games aren't in any subdirectories.
I have the same issues, tested Batorcera and Garlic, and both look great and have lot of features compared, but performance and compativility feels better using stock.
how are you supposed to make the 2nd sd card work on stock os? When I put it in, everything is slowed down and it doesn't even find the extra roms
Good video. Only for information, the update of the Stock firmware has solved the most of the problems. Now PS works better, the aspect can be changed, etc. I have a video in my Chanel about the changes
Funnily enough since making this video, GarlicOS has also mostly fixed the issues I mentioned: volume is now remembered on a per game basis, there are now 2 dimmer brightness settings and single presses now always go to the next game. Fascinating to watch this evolve.

GarlicOS 1.05 onwards needs new code for Boxart/Screenshot previews in game lists. The 640x480 workarounds are shit. There's a bug in navigating the "Consoles". When pressing left in the console entries, it should rotate the menu pages. However, it spares the last page when not all tiles are filled in the 2x4 segment.
Sorry one last thing. I think the biggest difference between GarlicOS and the stock is that when you change viewing options on stock, it essentially applies those setting to any game you play after unless you manually change it again. I have had little problem with that but I think for enthusiast who may switch between a couple different systems regularly, Garlic OS is more convenient cause you can do all kinds of saving settings for systems and even down to specific games.

I have such a small problem I wonder if you could help? :( I'm using stock OS just the way It is. I prefer to use native in-game saving progress rather than save staves for nostalgic reasons. Then GBA, Ps1 games, all works fine. The problem is in Snes. In the game I can save the game normally. Let's say Donkey Kong Country. I can see my % of game on menu. But whenever I exit the game and restart, the menu is empty. No games saved. It only happens on Snes. What am I missing?
Can you use cheats when playing gba roms on the stock software? Like Pokemon Fire Red using gameshark codes, or do you need garlic OS to have that oppertunity?
Also can you use fast forward (speed increase) on the stock OS emulators for gbc and gba? This will be a Pokemon emulator for me.
is it possible for stock os user to add updated bios file? cause i cant find the root of bios file (scph1001). i only see the bios folder but its empty

The p-uae core used in retroarch runs a little too slow at the standard clock speed. You only reach full speed at the "++" overclock setting, which drains the battery even faster...
Is it normal to keep pressing menu button several times to exit a game ?
Bit off topic but I really can't decide on what colour to go for, and I think this is first time I've seen the purple on youtube (and first time I've seen 2 side by side), I kinda wish purple had the black buttons of clear
Yeah, I love the gray so much. I have to wonder how much is the nostalgia for my first DMG GameBoy though. Honestly, I’ve never been a huge fan of transparent shells on electronics, so the decision was easy for me.
@@RGGeek Yeah I had DMG as a kid too, but two I have most nostalgia for I guess is my yellow GBC and blue GBA, actually makes me kinda sad that since my mid teens I haven't really bothered with handhelds
@@Zillawill Awww, well the RG35XX is a great affordable way to get back into them. It’ll play all those handhelds no problem, in some ways better than the original with a modern screen, save states, easier battery and not having to deal with cartridges. Welcome back!

Hi can you help me, I cant copy any of my roms to my rom sd card.
Just wanted to add this in case it helps anyone. I just got the RG35xx and it came shipped with the newest firmware update for the stock OS. The biggest difference between that and the one you show in this video is that for handheld consoles, particulary all Gameboy, you do now have options other than full screen. I believe their is Full Screen, Aspect Ratio, 1:1, and 1:1 with a basic overlay for the rest of the screen space. This update alone has me leaning towards the stock OS. I don't know that need all the color shading for gameboy, just want it to look normal and not stretched. Been playing some GBA with aspect ration and it looks great imo.
Glad to hear it! Sounds like they shipped out the early models before the software was fully baked.
sad to say those are seemingly bugged and lead to sound bugs on the gbc and gb roms and the Image is not truly rendered in the correct aspect ratio on thengba just squished so it looks rather bad, I hope they update the stock again, for now I will stick to garlic, also I really like the filters for retro arch, so I can make the game look more like on the original Gameboy or gbc

I decided to just play the handheld as it is since I’m having issues getting garlic. If I decide to just play it casually w the stock os and the sd card that came w it will I have any problems in the future? Like it crashing, not working, etc
Yes, its a trash card. Least you want to do is research on how to burn the 'img' file to a new card.
11:32 How do you actually turn off the system? I am having this sleep issue on Garlic OS. I can never tell when the system is actually turned off and when I come back it is dead. Happened on Stock OS and still doing it with Garlic.

Hi just bought the system with the garlic os preinstalled, but for some reason i was unable to save the game directly from the game, i have to rely on save state. do you have any solution on this?
I've never heard of this except I know at some point it stopped doing save states for MAME, so maybe it's just not saving arcade games?
HEllo sibilings, I heard that the sd who comes with the console is crap, i'm a Mac user and I have a 64 gb extreme pro by sandisk, can I just Copy the folders from one to another? I don't care about garlic and searching rom pack I know that some games included are not top notch but I will use my time in a different way . so if you guys can just answer the question.

Glad you're enjoying it! I mean, it's not the worst experience and it sure beats the stock firmware I got on the RG350M a couple years ago! I basically made this comparison to help people decide if they want to upgrade and I'm glad it helped you to decide to stick with stock!

It is just retroarch if you hit menu+x so look up how to do that in retroarch (but short answer, yes)

To my knowledge, no. Also, it’s disabled for Gambatte in the latest GarlicOS, but I expect this will be fixed in a future update.
Not really related but I’m torn between the transparent purple and the DMG color scheme, which one do you prefer?
I personally definitely prefer the DMG, but I've never been a huge fan of transparent handhelds and I owned an original DMG, so that adds nostalgic value to me.

If you insert the Stock SD card, you'll have stock again which is searchable, yes.
Does Garlic OS improve performance? As in does it playe more/better games?
I believe it actually plays less since it can't access the GPU since Anbernic won't release their source code. I haven't been playing enough "high-end" games on mine to notice any difference personally.

Today's (21 January) update overlocked the CPU to 1.3GHz (+300 mhz), so yes it does.

Can’t believe GarlicOS has NO SEARCH Function? Why? That makes me think the stock is better just because of this one feature.
I prefer the stock cause i dont have to install 20 million things and put in roms etc. only thing i am missing there is a fast forward option in GBA. Pokemon is really not enjoyable that way anymore.

It always just auto-saved for me. I can only speak for myself, but I never had any issues.

There is no search option on GarlicOS, only on the stock OS.

It's sad that stock is better than garlic.... Garlic needs to make their own save/load state instead of crappy retroarch, and need to add button sounds! And theme music on every them or at least most

Stock comes with games installed. On GarlicOS you have to install your own games.

32 GB is what I used for each card. Stock was 64 GB.
GarlicOS definitely is better in my opinion and fixed that non existent sleep issue with stock.

I won't like Stock has good presentation, but the features of Garlic are just impossible to ignore (even though OP did)
Having Sleep Mode, More Cores, built right into the OS is not just necessary it's REQUIRED, to get a good experience out of this amazing device I don't know why the Stock OS doesn't have Sleep Mode, but man it's something that's supper handy sometimes you just can't get to a save point quick enough before you have to do something else, and you need to just let it rest for awhile.
Also having more cores is just good to cause let's say you do enjoy those extra systems, now you can get an extra value out of the system by just having a CFW.
So, Stock has a sleep mode, but it really just drains your battery while it's asleep. Garlic doesn't have a sleep mode, but when you turn it off during a game it automatically saves your game and when you turn it on, it automatically loads your game, so it doesn't use any battery and feels like sleep. Hope this helps! :)

Then upgrade to GarlicOS and you’re set. I’ve been loving playing Atari 2600, 5200 and 7800 on it with Garlic. Still blows my mind they’d release such a device without Atari and native aspect ratios though! 🤯
