In most departments, this is how SWAT spends most of their time. Only a few departments have SWAT that spends most of their time on SWAT duty. Most departments have SWAT officers on patrol whenever they're not actually on SWAT calls
In real life, the LAPD SWAT team (D-Platoon) is a full-time SWAT unit. They don't do patrol except under very rare circumstances. All their time is spent on deployments and training exercises. LA is a big city. There's always something going on. The Metropolitan Division, however, has other platoons that are specifically tasked with crime suppression. They used to have 1 crime suppression platoon per geographic bureau of the LAPD (A, B, C and G platoons for Valley, West, Central and South Bureaus) but this was reduced to only 2 platoons due to personnel shortages.
@@zachdavis1282 you right big department like LAPD does have full time you are absolutely right. I'm from south carilina so are departments are a little small that's why we have part time swat members
It's because the LAPD has an entire unit that assists with production it's in their public affairs division. LAPD has actively participated in productions in many many productions, End of Watch, SWAT, Southland, The Rookie etc.
3:04 Honestly, this to me is one if my favorite parts of this episode. It kinda shows Powell taking another step in her training as 28 David. First Luce got her through SWAT Academy, then Street got her past her growing pains after she joined the team, and now that she’s rejected the offer to switch teams, Hondo’s teaching her more about the heart of an officer
Yeah, it took Powell a while to figure things out, but it was all worth it because she got the help she needed from Street, Commander Hicks, Tan, Deacon, Hondo, and Luca. They may not be on the same team right now, but Zoe Powell and Alexis Cabrera work very well together.
Honestly, in some ways the departure of Captain Cortez was a blessing in disguise. At that point Hicks became mentor yo the older SWAT staff, and father figure to younger ones
I like how Powell's opinions addressed how officers were treated following the George Floyd death. A lot of officers were probably very mistreated because of their uniforms when they did nothing but try to do their jobs right the best they knew how. And while, as a society we call for reforms, we often fail to think about how all this affects these people who work on the ground. It's easy to see how their "us vs them" mindset can come from.
This whole episode to me, especially Powell and Hondo’s storyline, is a callback to season 4 and the emphasis that season placed on how you have a community not served by cops on one hand, and cops trying to do their best despite other cops sullying their name on the other hand.
Honestly I think SWAT as a show handles those issues really well. We see it in the first few episodes too, a lot of media reporting woulda been like “SWAT Sergeant shoots and severely injures young black man” conveniently leaving out the accidentally bit and with no regard for A. How it affected him and B. What the rest of the team did immediately following that
My guess is it’s because back then he was supposed to become 20 David but when he didn’t he got placed back a rank, may be wrong and it could be a failure on the costumes department
@@poseidon808 it could be, but on swat fandom, they say Deacon is sergeant 2 , i think it was just a failure on the costume:) but it doesn`t matter now:))
When will moviemakers realise that LAPD does not wear their microphones on the shoulder because their epaulettes are completely sewed on the shirt? Southland got it right. SWAT and the Rookie ain't.
Because it’s not real😂 you can go through every cop movie or tv series and say that there’s something not real in it from uniforms to how they actual do police work it’s Hollywood
I hope the police made a special badge for people who had to fight black people for 2 years after floyd (who died of an overdose after using fent, had priors including threatning a pragnant lady, and used a counterfit to pay).
There are a couple of others that have been shown. Another female SWAT operator, Cabrera, came up in the same class as Powell, and a SWAT Tactical medic rode with 20 Squad a few times. Powell is the only one focused on as she is the one who ultimately replaced Chris.

This is true in a small city they have part time voluntarily swat team members

LAPD has a full time SWAT and this show does a terrible job of showing it. Technical advisor needs to be launched ASAP.

SWAT is still not very good with that LAPD patrol officers don't use shoulder mics🤣🤣
im pretty sure those uniforms are wrong
@@brushedrain7363 It probably is in many ways, but the mics are the most noticeable that are wrong with their uniform. They shouldn't even be there.
@bobum Boohoo, shoulder m9cs are more reliable and convenient than what LAPD does, they make the uniform look better too.

They actually look good in their patrol uniforms
its almost like the duty uniform of a policeman is designed to command respect and project authority......

Am i the only one that is bothered by his shirt buttoned all the way up without a tie? lol
Smart cops

what the hell is that button up on the long sleeve shirt without a tie
Definitely looks odd
Its called Class b its basically Class a without a tie.
But the top button should be unbuttoned.
@@incognito315 thats what i Meant, if you dont wear a tie then you never botton up the top button, I mean how can they not see how stupid it looks
it does look weird also one more thing LAPD does not even use shoulder mics so the uniform is unaccurate.
Lowest rank in SWAT is PIII (2 chevrons). Here we have a PII (no chevrons) - there are no PII-spots in SWAT.
Deacon is sergeant 2 not 1, i mean in first episode of season 1 while patroling he have the sergeant 2 grade on his shoulder

DeLuca is detective? Two chevrons and a lozenge?
nah if you look closely it is 2 chevrons and a star which means officer III+1
Very close and easy mistake to make but as pointed out above it’s a bit different.
When will moviemakers realise that LAPD does not wear their microphones on the shoulder because their epaulettes are completely sewed on the shirt? Southland got it right. SWAT and the Rookie ain't.
Pretty sure The Rookie don't have shoulder mics, so they are very very and even much much better than SWAT
But Southland had mics too? LAPD don't have shoulder mics or any kind of mics on their patrol units. Even Southland got it wrong.

Super
Where is my king at Hondo
now the S.W.A.T. becomes a Patrol Cops well this is really surprising
Not really even big city’s like NY and LA really don’t need SWAT teams waiting for the call every day all day so they usaly have them go out in patrol
Very few people are happy to see SWAT......dont know where that idea came from lol
God hate when they bring up the criminal
Noticed that none of them are wearing their S.W.A.T. pins on their uniform either....At least here where I'm from they do.
Good to see Sony is forever out of touch with reality!
