  • In this video I do a deep dive into the history and performance of the underrated 340 Weatherby Magnum. I compare it to the more popular 300 WBY and 338 Win mag. Hope you enjoy the video!

You’re gonna love your 340 when it’s full up and running. I just started load development on my custom Mark V Accumark chambered in 340. Shooting a 250 grain LRX loaded behind a max charge of 87.5 grains of RL-22 with a COAL of 3.640” and I’m getting 3005 fps.

I bought a used one after an elk hunt I was on were I was using a Remington 700 with the 300WSM and had a great shot at a huge bull elk, distance was 325 yards with only a head shot available. Following that I reloaded 250 gr MRX with a new Carlson stock and the Vortex scope. At 600 yards it shoots 3 inches groups. I realize it’s a bit overkill but though I normally would never take a shot beyond 400 yards, hunting for elk in open rolling hills calls for the need to push the limit sometimes.

@@johnlocke_1 How about the UA-cam Groupie Parrot mouth talker claims to be using 30 cal 250 grain bullets, only in UA-cam you see idiots with no experiences in firearms or ammo Parrot mouth talking shooting over 200 grain bullets in 30 caliber.
At 64 years old and growing up in the Pacific NW hunting Roosevelt Elk on the N . Oregon coast over massive canyons no one in my family or myself used bullets over 185 grains for hunting.
The 30 caliber 180 grain - 185 grain 8 mm - 185 grain 338 fired from the rifles we have in 300 Wby mag - 8mm Rem mag - 8mm-378 Wby mag and 338-win mag all make complete pass throughs on Elk over these canyons.
Only once did I fire one Hornaday 220 grain 8mm Interloc bullet at a Roosevelt elk and sure thing the copper lead core bullet it blew up from the speed being fired from the Brevex Mauser in 8mm-378 Wby mag.
We lost that Elk because of bullet failure.

The 340 weatherby has its place in the hunting world but just for me personally I stayed with the tried and true 300 win mag. Is the 340 overkill for sone game animals well it can be but dead is dead on my mind. Another thing I kept in mind before I bought my 300 win mag was ammo availability. 340 weatherby is hard to come by and you are limited unless you reload it obviously but a 300 win mag is more common and easy to find. Just for me personally a 300 win mag is just right for what I need it to do and for the animals I hunt. Different guns for different people and uses

I grew up in NW Oregon with family hunting Roosevelt Elk then in 1989 I moved to Alaska to advance my already going guide services.
In Alaska was the great education that large bore rifle with allot of energy rule over big mean animals.
Any rifle in 30 caliber or smaller was always unreliable to put down fast Yukon Moose and all the bears.
Even 300-win mags or 300 Wby mags I watched client shoot black bears that wanted to fight after being shot and it takes multiple bullets to take the fight out of them.
I had a black bear shot by client shoot using a 300 win mag that just stopped the bear from using its hund legs, so it wanted to come at me by pulling itself at me with the front legs and snapping its teeth with growling, Mr. Black bear ate a 286 grain Barns TSX from the 9.3x62 Mauser that snuffed the life out of that bear on the spot.
Then when rifles like the 338 or larger was used and using copper expanding bullets the difference in fast kills was greatly apparent how the large bullets with High energy took the will to live or fight out of moose and bears.
I was offered a $200 deal on a new CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser that I can't explain why it kills every animal so fast other than large 286 grain Barns TSX bullets I use and have the reloads up to a little under commercial loaded 375 H&H magnum loads.
The 9.3x62 Mauser became my guide work rifle for 18 years.
One other of my rifles is a one shot one kill is the Brevex Mauser in 8 mm-378 Wby magnum that has a 30 inch Douglas barrel so 185 grain bullets my Chronograph shows bullets moving at 3900 FPS when using 115 grains of IMR 7828.

There is no good reason to be using 338 250 or 300 grain bullets for hunting when the best ballistics for the 338 comes from the 225 grain 338 bullets.
I have even put complete pass throughs using the 338 win mag shooting 210 grain 338s on clients AK Brown bears from 1300 to 1500-pound bears.
There is allot of nonsense now from Parrot mouth talkers of using extreme heavy weight bullets that normally are used for match shooting and never was used for much hunting.

Id love ta do a SxS with my 358 NM
Its pretty close. (Altho you have a publicized edge) You have more case capacity.
Those Barnes may have some expansion @ 2000 fps, they will NOT be optimal or even what most expect. From say a CupNCore. 2200 is better and 2400 will get what most expect to see when a person says good expansion.
These copper slugs are awesome for penetration and weight retension. NOT GREAT for long range bullet expansion.
IMHO choose them for closer dangerious targets and choose a different bullet for long range preformance on game.
