I dunno how many times I've watched this when I was young. This was such a beautiful recreation of this wonderful story. Was always a fan of Jodie, and it was the first time I saw Tom Felton. This film will always be memorable to me. If you haven't seen it. GO SEE IT! It's based on a true story too.
I was three when this first came out. Hardly understand a thing back then hahaha. Watched it again when i was older and completely in love with this movie and also the unspoken love between the king and anna. This movie is also one of the many reasons why i love the history of siam.
Every time I watch this, it just rips the heart right out of me, here I am a 53-year-old man, bawling my eyes out like a little kid, but this movie is magic, it goes right down to your very soul, and tugs at your heart like nothing else could, pure genius!

this movie was not allow to shoot in thailand.So they shot it in Malasia,with all the palace rebuilt.very well done.This version is more realistic to Thai culture .anyway jt is banned in Thailand becuase thai people believe the story ,the romance between the King and Anna was not true.the earlier versions were not accepted or banned in Thailand becuase the manner of the characters in play and movie was just like monkey or low class people.
Anna Leonowens is well known for having fabricated most of the stories about her life. Not out of any nastiness but simply to make life easier for herself and her children.
This was a gorgeous movie, Chow Yun Fat was amazing. Jodie Foster though...not a fan of hers at all. I just don't get how she is an Oscar winner. But I did enjoy the movie.

This is based on the memoirs of the real Anna Leon-Owens; a real person. The time was the Victorian Era; she was a widow with a young son. Her prospects, as the widow of a low-ranking military officer in the English army in India, were very poor. She might have ended up on streets, but this opportunity to go to Siam (modern day Thailand) as the tutor for the king's many children, was something she felt would be a better prospect for both herself and her son. Because this is based on a true story, the ending was neither happy nor sad: it was simply what happened. Sometimes duty must come before personal feelings. That was true for both the king and Anna. But... It -IS- a testament to the love between them that so influenced Prince/King Chulalongkorn that he only had ONE wife, himself; nor did Mrs. Leon-Owens ever remarry.
The set was built on Langkawi Island, which is a part of the state of Kedah in the north of Malaysia. After filming, the set remained as a paid tourist attraction for several years. Around 5 years ago, the land the set was built on was sold to real estate developers, so the set was completely demolished and 2 luxury resorts were constructed.
If now you come back to the Anna and The King's palace set at the Batu Gajah Sanctuary Golf Resort (where the Siam King's palace build) in Malaysia... it will be really to be more horror Nang Nak set..because the set has been abandon for 20years (2019).
This jewel of movie made ne fall in love deeper with Thai swords and this epic time linked to them... Khopkhun khrap Khun Andy Tenant and everyvody who made "Anna and the kibg" possible...
There is no Thai people dare to play in this movie or work for them openly. The whole set made by foreigner not Thai. Wow thats massive. Kinda look a like our culture here. Nice ^^ Eventhough the story of Anna is not 100% true in her book. As a Thai! I can tell that she is in her imagination while writing it. maybe 15-20% is the true story.

I enjoyed Jodie's acting. She doesn't seem warm and nurturing as teacher and does not have feminine softness to cause the king to fall in love with. Don't know who would be best suited for the role.
I have watched this film many times and always enjoyed it. But, I must say to choose a country that had no usable buildings seems extremely foolish. The film was not a box office success...but how could any movie possibly make a profit when money had to be spent for such an enormous group of sets, having to make all the clothes, just trying to remake Siam. There has to be balance. How very foolish and costly were these decisions??!!

ตอนนั้นรัฐบาลไทยขอว่าให้เอาคำว่า สร้างจากเรื่องจริงออกกับตัดบางฉากออกเช่น ฉากรำดาบกับฉากตลกอีกสองฉากมั้ง แต่ฝรั่งไม่ยอมก็เลยทางใครทางมัน แต่ก็ยังส่งคนไปช่วยเป็นที่ปรึกษาพวกเสื่อผ่ากับพวกของประกอบฉากต่างอยู่ดี

Most of chow yun fat movie had bad ending,,, film hong kong 1941, peace hotel, and hard boiled ,, at the ended he died
