Agree about Chikamoto as MVP even with the injury but Murakami was insanely good and a worthy candidate too. Should have just given the MVP to Awaji Island.
Yes Murakami absolutely had a strong case. If the MVP criteria is best player on the best team, which is almost always what it is in NPB, then one can argue Murakami’s 1.75 ERA is more than deserving. But in my opinion, 145 innings isn’t quite enough for an MVP winner. Chikamoto missed only a couple of weeks and led the CL in WAR, so I think he would’ve been a good compromise pick for both traditionalists who value his batting average and stolen bases and statheads who value the WAR, K/BB, and defense.
i’m not able to keep up with this league as much as i would like but your videos make it easy to see what all is going on in NPB. i’ve adopted the Buffaloes as my favorite team (shame Yamamoto went to the Dodgers instead of any other team) and i hope they can continue to succeed even after losing some great players to MLB.
I'm a Japanese baseball fan, but as you can see from the video, there aren't many hitters who have good results in the Pacific League. This is because the level of pitching has increased dramatically in recent years. If MLB's best hitter came to the Pacific League, how good would he be?
The level of pitching is very high but the balls being deadened have also contributed to the low-scoring environment. If Ohtani returned to the Fighters today he would probably hit .320 with a 1.150 OPS, like 2022 Murakami.
Chiba lotte Marines,has Roki Sasaki,the most talented pitcher in the NPB,will pitchall season this year ,and Atsuki Taneichi,who should be pretty close to a top 10 in 2024,started to use curve ball this season, should be considered the most likely to be in first place in the NPB. My team are the Carp, it is telling that the only players on this list for the upcoming season are players who, in my opinion, haven't developed to their potential. Both are good, but need to take a step up if Hiroshima doesn't want to finish last, imo. Morishita really needs to become an ace, and Sakakura needs to anchor the lineup, especially with Nishikawa gone. I'm...not confident.
I agree Hiroshima is facing an uphill battle in 2024 especially with Nishikawa gone. They overperformed last year beyond anything I expected but it’ll be very difficult to repeat that even though Arai seems like a competent manager. I’m not confident in their new foreign imports and like you said, their good players are not quite in the elite tier. For them to make the playoffs again, Morishita needs to become a dominant true ace again, Sakakura needs to carry the lineup, Kozono needs to improve, and someone in the outfield mix like Suekane or Tamura need to breakout big.
@@YakyuCosmopolitan This is exactly what I feared would happen when they picked up Akiyama a couple of years back: they think they are more competitive then they are. Find it hard to believe Kosuke Tanaka has another 250 above replacement level PAs in him and though Arai does seem competent as you said, I don't think +9 win to second-order expected wins (per Delta) is sustainable. But maybe Sukane will turn out to be consistent during a whole season. Wishing for that feels like hanging off a steep cliff by my fingertips though...
38 xFIP- is actually stupid. I hope he signs with the dodgers if he gets posted next season. That Japanese trio of 3 of the best players would be absolutely stupid
He is an honorable mention but I did not include him because his offensive profile is quite volatile (28.0 K%) and his defense is not good. That said, I think his power is legit and I hope he can hit 25-30 HR this year.
Roki is a once in a decade Japanese pitcher but he doesn't pitch enough for mlb standards not even close to a closer or relief pitcher just like fujinami who realised the case load was to much hence his statistics for the As.

WARが絶対的な指標だとは思わないけど、投手も打力型野手も守備型野手も総合して比較する際には現状WARより優れている指標を知らない。
守備の評価はセイバーメトリクス使わないとかなり曖昧になるから、打撃型でUZRが悲惨なオリ杉本のWARがマイナスなのも最初は納得できなかった。

たとえどれだけ支配的なピッチングをしていようと年間1300イニングの内の50イニング程度しか投げないのなら、それなりの評価にしかならないのは仕方がないよ
