  • This is a short version of the full TinyStudio TV episode made for TinyStudio magazine subscribers. Althoigh this is an edited version, it still covers my whole process in creating this lovely narwhal! I made this by cutting pattern pieces from foam board and making them into bespoke looms, so each piece is woven specifically for the final shapes and design. There are so many other ways this concept can be used!
The pattern used in this is ‘Nate the Narwhal’, from Funky Friends Factory. In the video I share some ideas on how to choose a pattern that will work well with this technique.

Ok first of all the narwhal is beautiful! My mind is swirling with ideas! I love to spin art yarn so this has so many exciting possibilities! Thank you for a clear, informative and inspiring video!

What a fun and wonderful idea. All the texture and colors really bring the narwal to life.
I'm tempted to use my less than perfect spins for this sort of project.

This is brilliant! I've tried making my own little looms for craft projects on the corkboard I use for bobbin lace, and I had a really hard time maintaining consistent tension. This, with the pins in foam core, is so much steadier! I love this idea, and the way you used a soft toy as proof of concept makes it so clear how well this works AND how custom the end result is! Absolutely love this method and your results. Thank you so much for sharing!

Great minds think alike! The pins are definitely nice and stable in the foam board, and I also found I could re-use the pieces to make multiples of the same shapes without any wobbliness creeping in when re-placing the pins too.

This is fantastic. I've been reluctant to get into weaving, one of the reasons being that I wouldn't want to cut up my work!

Same! I love to weave but its so easy to end up with yards of fabric and big hesitation on cutting it up :D Also this way making the pattern shaped looms gives the chance to really fit the weave to the project, its a fun design jigsaw puzzle!

Gorgeous! I can see a jerkin or waistcoat made from all these unusual shapes joined together …( maybe crocheted together) so many possibilities with this idea… You are amazingly creative Suzy! I love watching anything you make. Thank you for sharing, I don’t think I have the patience to do this but who knows… just may give it a go 😊
