Florida was then known as Spanish Florida people mixed in freely and had children which was not illegal since it's a huge part of our culture whether you have Spanish or Latino roots (the same as Louisiana when it was colonized by the French ) and blacks who were Catholic were free and owned acres and acres of land before British and American rule

You put capital letters for the Latino's, Spaniards, and the British but lower case for Blacks. Why the disrespect?

I agree that Charleston should have been mentioned but you don't have to sound Geechee to be Gullah. That influence was lost in certain parts of the corridor and also with the dying elders. But if you eat fish and grits, shrimp and grits, red rice, field peas and okra and rice with almost every meal, you may just be Gullah. Oh. And let's not forget low country boils. We started that too

Cowboy Fan yes it did. In lysine cases it was safer to move south to Florida and a sizable amount of African Americans had went down to Mexico cuz the Mexicans wouldn’t send us back to our overseers like the whites in the north did.

Martin Smith That was not the Underground Railroad. I’m very aware of the original peoples relationship with Mexico, and slaves escaping to go to Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, and to the western frontier. But none of those relocations or alliances was called the Underground Railroad. It’s just too much slang talk that confuses the information. The Underground Railroad was a network of safe houses that were organized and ran by a specific group of people, that included white peoples. That didn’t exist going to the south, not that we can prove or have evidence of.

@@Brookintellect I think he’s referring to the fact that many slaves, since Florida was closer than Canada, would obviously try and make it to freedom by coming to Florida vs the trek to Canada. Georgia used to be Indian territory and was actually made a state for this very reason (to block slaves route to Florida/make it harder). I’m 6th generation Floridian on both sides so I’m very aware.
