Nice video, I learnt the hard way. Rammed a screwdriver through which broke a piece off the filter inside (I did not notice this). The offending piece ended up in the main oil supply gallery to the head. Was fine until I wound the bike up and oil starvation to the cam melted the bearing surface. My mates thought it was low oil so I put a used head on. Went out up the same road same revs and bang it did it again! I couldn't believe it, sat at the side of the road in despair. Thought about scrapping the Blackbird, decided to take engine out and strip it down again, couldn't see why it had melted the cam bearing again. At 11pm one night while watching tv I thought it must be oil starvation to the same part of the cam. Went out and checked which end of the cam had melted, found the corresponding gallery in the head. Removed head gasket and there was a piece of filter jammed in the gasket, the gasket has a sort of membrane that must increase oil pressure. So it was allowing enough oil at low revs but when revved it was starved. Found another top end and fitted. Ran sweat as a nut after that! Total cost about £1000 doing it myself, all due to driving a screwdriver through a filter .! Share this if you want . Cheers Paul

woow damm thats tragic . . But a good lesson for Us, Cheers . . Best thing i did was buy a tool for removing the filter after years of doing the same as you did on occassion, theyre cheap compared to most stuff we buy thats bike related and you can use it on your car as well . . in hindsight im pissed with myself for taking so long

If you don't have space to work with the filter wrench, how the heck can you wrap it around with that "huge" roll of masking tape Dell?

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

There you go, all little nuggest that work well...i guess paint thinners wouls work just as well... but if you have a nice shiney bike, i wouldnt want to get that on the engine paint finish.... the tape once you build up a few wraps also insulates you form the heat as i like to take mine off when the bike is hot...

Nice one. If the situation is not that extreme, I find those Nitrile-coated gloves usually give enough grip.

Hi mate, sorry, you had this, its very common...the bolts are a fine thread and can get seized quite easily....its just a stuck bolt, and a case of using a well fitting six sided socket, and a sharp sudden force with a long extension bar and they will go..it may help to aim a little WD40 through the inside onto the thread...but then you must clean it off after and make sure that none gets onto the pads, nothing sophisticated just a long bar and a proper tool... hope that helps mate.. cheers, Del

  • @Moonfleet41

Yeah, its fear of leaking that motivates people to over tighten so many things, but its usualy unesassary... if they are fitted right, without too much pressure, they just twist off with the same ease.. even a wet cloth works better than a dry hand.. if you over do those K&N tin filters, you can just rip the welded nut head they put on them clean out... its about fitting it right more than clever tricks on how to undo them... cheers again chum... Del.

I like this idea, it is simpler than double folded sandpaper and it works fine, even without a wrench. Occasionally I use a wide elastic band around the filter to get a better grip. Lately I've been using the knurled end of the filter since the sheet metal sidewall seems to collapse too easily when gripped with a standard wrench.

Duct tape works treat, and get some strips of sand paper taped in the mix too, and you'll grip it so tight you'll be able to pick the bike up by it.!

Hi. Nice to talk to you again. I wanted to tell you about a product that you may be interested in. Take a look at a "filtermag". It's a high-power magnet that sticks to your oil filter and it catches any metal particulates that your filter may miss. Many vids on youtube about it. Take a look at it. You may consider buying one. Good day bro!

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

Well done for getting it done.....but i cannot stress enough how easy it is to snap the neck off the filter plate and end up in a whole heap of trouble... when you hit the filter lip with a screw driver (or chisel) you send the shock direcly to the thread... its very brittle and not built to take shock... if you can, always try to just get a good grip with a method like that and you're a lot safer.. ever wrapping heavy grit wat'n'dry paper round the filter can work.. anything but hitting it.Del.

Try cleaning off the filter and then put on a rubber washing up glove , marigolds in the UK , which will give you enough grip to undo the filter . It is amazing how much extra grip the rubber allows . The same trick helps undo jar and bottle tops !

Half a turn from seated is the prescribed tightness value in dozens of manuals and in 30yrs I've never had one come undone...on the other hand, more than once, I've taken the filter to the first half turn and found it still a little slack, so just wound an extra quarter - it's not to be taken religiously and then blamed when it goes wrong, it's just a general guide to give you a feel for it...most importantly it's there to stop people over-tightening them, leading to problems & warranty issues!

Well, maybe... except the manufacturer of my bike says to give it two full turns after the gasket make contact. Given how the filter is exposed to significant vibration, I'll stick with the manufacturers recommendation.

1/2 a turn more? According to the Manufacturers service manual it’s 2 full turns on my Bandit. And it leaked when I didn’t do that the first time I changed one. And I’d love to see you demo that in the Bandit without taking the headers off 😂. Just use a K&N.

thanks for the vid. tried this on a Sportster oil filter but it's tucked in too far. Watching this did give me another idea though - like your friend with the screwdriver, I didn't ram it into the filter but drilled a neat hole in the filter to get the driver through and got it off easy.

I wish I would have known this trick on the bike I bought. The oil plug, filter, and dipstick were so tight I had to come up with a special plan for each. For the filter I actually had the small ring tool that binds, and the handle will turn sideways, but it would slip. With some tape on it the tool would have worked. I had to jam a screwdriver in it.

  • @Moonfleet41

Honestly mate, for spinning it on nice and tight you can still get all the grasp you need like this....but for getting it off, if its out of reach i just use some big Proto grips on it to get it moving.....and BTW, ive always managed to get my hand in behind the down pipes on Bandits and Gixers and get a firm grip round it, i use a glove to protect from the hot pipes, either way it works for me.... cheers mate.. Del.

i know this is an oldie, but I got a 2009 R1 and the filter is basically rounded off. been trying to use a cup and that sucker won't budge. You can't really get tape round it, there's no space, you can't get a standard chain tool on it because there's no space. Even if I was to put a screw driver through it there's nowhere to actually get to it from!

Agreed, same on my Street Glide, and the genuine Harley tool doesn't work if it's over tightened, but as we all know, we usually get them off in the end... try a little sandpaper round it and that often gives that extra grip, then there's the trick with the self-tapping screw if you really get stuck?!

If I could pick everyone brain on a problem . got gs550 1985 with a motor vibration ak 5k rp. does it in neural and down the highway with or without the clutch pulled. I did sync the carbs and it runs good and I've checked all the motor mount bolts. at this point I'm guessing and suspect it to be timing chain maybe? but I would think that make it run shitty or maybe valve adjustment. how could I further diagnose. it could be deeper in the motor is guess, maybe worn mains but the bike only has 131 miles. save the bike from the dead and has sat for a while prior to my ownership

On Harleys it usually happens when the last person to fit a filter didn't believe its just half a turn from the point the seal touches.. so they wind it in another half turn and wonder why they cant get it off..lol!

Ya. I over tightened a spin on oil filter doing a Harley oil change once. Huge mistake! I had actually squeezed the gasket so much it popped out from between the sealing surfaces, unknown to me. I started the bike up to fill up the filter and recheck level, and turned away from the bike to take a phone call. While on the phone call with my back turned, the Harley was dumping all the fresh oil on the floor of my shop. I got it turned off before any engine damage (hopefully), but what a damn mess to clean up.

Oops, i think we've all had those moments aye... glad there was no damage.... These days most filers have the rubber seal in a groove that stops it squashing out, which is why once the filter touches base, the seal has done all its sealing.. any tightening after that is just grinding metal...

On the two bikes I have, only about two inches of filter sit proud. Not a great hands-width your demo shows unfortunately. Better you demo'd this on a bike really as this is not like for like. That said, I will try the tape with the filter gripping tool as it may not slip as much around the filter. Thanks for that tip anyhoo.

No problem, all bikes are different, and if you get stuck, try slipping a bit of sandpaper under the filter tool with the grit side facing in as that often works too.

Thanks a lot for posting this video. I had a stuck filter on my 2002 GSF600 and I was able to remove it using your instructions. I used gasoline to clean the filter so the tape can adhere to it.

Just tried this on my stuck oil filter on my 03 ZX6R and it worked a treat! Shame I'd already ordered a wrench for it before seeing this video haha. Cheers!

This tip gives me another "friction" idea. You may not have enough room to get that tape on. Clean the outside of the filter with a spray can of cleaner, let it dry off, and use a handful of that grippy rubber fabric that you see in craft and hardware stores. People use wherever they don't want things to slide around, such on the shelve of an RV, or maybe to line the bottom of a tool drawer.

I used to have a VFR 750 back in the 80's. I also raced in the first ever 24hr Enduro east of the Mississippi back in 2002 I think. It was in Alabama the Perry Mountain 24hr Challenge. I raced the first year and we took 2nd in our class. We were a 6 man team, 11 miles course the toughest race I have every done riding in the night through the woods across rivers over rocks etc...

Bloody good tip.. I can see this working on an engine where the filter is sticking out in the wind but the Oil cooled suzuki motors (GSXR, Bandit) have the cartridge filter buried in a recess under the front of the motor and you cannot get your fingers in there to get a good hand grip, especially with the exhaust still in place. Any suggestions?

Awesome tip. Needed that bit of information 3 months ago before I turned a filter change on my old Datsun 240Z into a dog's breakfast.

ha ha now that made me chuckle, probably cos I've done it a dozen times myself, I trained as a bus fitter and the oil filters on a B12 engine is the size of a paint can and you needed a 4ft bar and 2 bus mechanics swinging on the end to get it free, the sandpaper just makes pretty patterns in it!

Just reading my suzuki service manual and it says " to proberly tighten the oil filter, use the special tool. Never tighten the oil filter by hand only" so confusing

    • @Moonfleet41

Does it tell or show you what that "special tool" is Tommy..?
