At 25:38 is all you have to know about where Lance World Champ turned into Lance Tour Champ. As he says "he (Indurain) goes along the flats at 55, 56, 57k an hour. I was in my 53 11... getting dropped." He saw the writing on the wall.
Absolutely... You have to watch these early 90s tours to put the LA years into context.... He obviously didn't know the future, but at that moment he thought, fuck it, everyone's on EPO, why not?
There's a moment in that interview when he hesitates for a split second, and in that moment he looks and sounds like Greg Lemond would in 2001, talking about Armstrong. The disbelief and the realization that it wasn't an honest effort.
@@treygray2817 he was yes but not on the level he would get to. IIRC he was just on steroids not EPO or blood bags. What lance realized here is that what he was doing wasn't enough.
Boardman's time trial is still the fastest ever done, that was not only due to him using the Lotus bike but that bike was made for his body size and posture. UCI banned the Lotus bike later on.
Watching Lemond give that interview hurts. “At least I had what I had”. Massive doping throughout the peloton turned the twilight of a great career into pitch-black night.
I remember seeing that cornering error by Indurain. I live in that area now so I know that corner well. It’s the first right hander after the super-fast, safe straight bit of the Malaucene descent. You’re used to descending at 80kph and the corner tightens.
I still have some of these vcr tapes from world cycling productions, though I usually followed the classics more than the tours. I only wish we had similar documentaries of the old days of the tour when it was much more elemental and harder.
Every year Liggett was telling that Indurain never attacked, but he attacked effectfully every year of his Tour tenure. In 1991 he attacked on the descent before the final climb of the first mountains stage (later getting company from Chiapucci who attacked at the bottom of that final climb) and Indurain had also attacked on one of the flat stages before that. Both times winning important time. In 1992 he again attacked on the first mountains stage when he saw that Lemond was in trouble. He did the same again in 1993, when he saw Bugno in trouble on the first mountains stage. And again here in 1994 he attacked on the first mountains stage - this time when he witnessed Rominger was hurting bad. In 1995 Indurain made a very surprising attack on the way to Liege with Johan Bruyneel on his wheel. That was the day before the first big time trial so it was a big surprise to see him spend energy on that stage. Eventhough it had some of the climbs from Liege-Bastogne-Liege (I believe La Radoute was one of them) it was still a relatively flat stage to see a favourite attack.
"It was said they put this week in (harder mountain stages) to try to break Miguel Indurain..." 1:19:00 , but nothing can break the world's best juice.
It would be really interesting to have a completely frank discussion of the doping. This was the era where some were, some weren't, and it would be fascinating to hear the story from the ground of what was going on without judgement.
Greg goes from winning the Tour to getting dropped by his own team in the TTT. I guess he "just said NO to E P O! Then Lance gets passed in the TT by the EPO monster Indo while he's in the 53x11 "getting dropped". Ha! After that he's like, "Okay, enough of this. It's on!"

You guys aren't lawyers how it seems or state attorneys. If you hit an obstacle which is a pedestrian, you gonna go to court for 100% in real life. TDF is a sports event where it seems they don't measure with the same law enforcement. Imagine hitting a cop outside of TDF...

Indurain worked with Dr Conconi. The way he climbed the Hautacam reminds me of Armstrong. Just an observation.
I think those famous dope doctors also picked and worked on the riders they knew would win due to their physiology

Funny they blame the stage 2 crash on the policeman, when the rider was head down straight for the wall, not even looking where he was going.
