Classic TV Theme: The Big Valley

- 'The Big Valley' marked the return of Barbara Stanwyck to television, and launched the career of a relative newcomer: Lee Majors. While it was never a top-20 show, it did well enough to run four seasons. The theme music is by George Duning, who rose from piano player in Kay Kyser's orchestra to one of Hollywood's most versatile songwriters and composers. Sequences from seasons one and four are included here.

One of the all time greatest Western Television series of all time Period!!!!!
The greatest western,
The show had a moral message in most every episode and I love this series so much!
As beautiful as Linda Evans was, and she was beautiful, Barbara Stanwyck was the epitome of woman. Strong and beautiful. Consummate in her decency and compassion, unyielding as an iron rod.
quite simply one of the greatest tv shows of all time
The orchestra music of these shows! Big, bold music. I just love the opening music of the prime time shows of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. When television was new and exciting. I miss those days.
This music and theme brings deep feeling of heaven on earth and AWE...goosebumps. I pray heaven has this music ❤
That first shot of Linda Evans. Oh, be still my heart.:)
My first husband said he married me because I looked like Audra.
@@kimber2863 Wow!!! love that.:)
@@kimber2863 Cute anecdote there!
NO LIE! My Beloved Amore- May Her Rest be Ever Peaceful!- & Mother of My 2 delightful-children(!), looked just like her!! When we met, all the other fellas were crowded around her table (We were representatives, for differing firms) so, I could NEVER SEE Her! One day, word came to Me, from another young lady She worked with, that she'd REALLY, like to have lunch with Me! Not really knowing anything about her, except she was maybe, a little-pretty, I said sure, so as NOT to be rude. I was used to "pretty" girls paying Me way-too-much-attention, as I was NOT, going to win any male 'beauty' contests, I just thought, maybe she liked the way I was dressed, and, that i didn't become a jerk, when she came in, and bother her at her table.. WELL-LLLL, let Me tell you friend(s), My teeth almost fell-out, when I saw what she really looked-like! YES! Just like Ms. Evans, whom we had the mutual-pleasure of meeting, in a mall in CA, after she became noted, as 'Dynasty's 'Krystal Carrington. Even then, her beauty was heart-stopping! Someone put forward, My baby, as a candidate, for 'who looks like Krystal Carrington 'contest', they were having in the mall that day. My baby won! They embraced and exchanged greetings and I even got to be photographed, between the two (2) of them!! She was - almost!- as sweet as My Beloved in personality! (John Derek, must have lost his mind, to let-go of this woman, I remember thinking!
So, believe Me friend, I KNOW, where you're coming from!! Peace & Blessings!! :)
Peter Breck and Lee Majors... Be still my ❤!!
Even as a teenager in the 1970's the networks played reruns of The Big Valley, and it didn't matter to me that they were reruns, it was new to me anyway, the only thing that comes to mind about the show is that I think of it now as a show which had strong moral fiber, and that I loved it had strong moral fiber. What I have to say about this symphony suite is I love it, there is so much going on simultaneously I simply get lost, yes, It's so easy to get lost in those notes, and I love it!!!
The same people missing the days of "moral fiber" are the ones who also voted for the "grab e'm by the p***y" guy, so.... :/
Liking the characters is the key to loving this great show, methinks
@@scotnick59 Yes!!! and Have a Magical Day!!!
"...there is so much going on simultaneously I simply get lost, yes, It's so easy to get lost in those notes"
Yes! Exactly! I love your descriptive words and how they capture the feelings the music evokes.
I always look forward to watching this every Saturday afternoon. A great cast - and sorely miss those who have passed away.
Brings back beloved memories of my grandmother, she loved this TV show!!🥹
Of all the theme songs of all the old westerns this is the best one and my favorite
Of all the TV westerns, this one was my jam as a kid. I liked Rawhide, High Chaparral, and The Rifleman, but this one reigned supreme. That's "Miss Barbara Stanwyck" to you. 😂
Man it feels weird, I remember watching these in the morning before going to school as a kid. 😟
A great western series like so many others from the 1960's and 70's. Linda Evans was definitely beautiful and I liked all the Barkley characters. The opening scenery of the Big Valley are beautiful complimented by the majestic theme song. I really liked the theme songs of many westerns back then...The Virginian, High Chaparral, Bonanza...and the movies, The Magnificent Seven, True Grit, The Comancheros. But other future series would also be good, like Lonesome Dove.
The theme song from High Chaparral was my favorite.
I use to have a crush on Linda Crystal when I was a kid.
good show and song
It has been so long time i tried to find this theme. I always try and try, eventhough I has forgotten the tittle of the film. I just remember one name, Barbara. By that name, I tried to search it on google.
And finally, I got it tonight. Thankyou so much. You bring my beautifull past come to today.
I really really love the theme.
If only I can, I wanna meet the actors and actress. 😁
Back when tv shows had great theme songs.
The second intro in this video was actually from
the third season. The theme music was given at least three different arrangements (main and end titles) during the show’s run.
The first one was the best.
Absolutely! Every time it was tinkered with, it lost something.
Heath was the Jon Snow of the Barkley’s.
at the 2:11 mark is an interesting credit. Production Supervisor was Norman S. Powell. The son of legendary actress Joan Blondell and adopted son of Dick Powell, one of the "stars" in Big Valley's production company "Four Star". His real father was renown cinematographer George Barnes, who divorced Blondell shortly after his birth. Norman Powell went on to become a major player at CBS and other production companies. He was a major mover and shaker in television right up until his death in 2021 at the age of 86. He never retired, and was working with Gary Sinise on a sequel to one of his military dramas when he passed. I always find it interesting that the children of "old" Hollywood became the leaders in modern television.
I remember when a rerun of The Big Valley would come on I'd be like "Ah, not this." Then a few seconds in something would happen like Heath's horse would get spooked by a rattlesnake and he'd fall and hit his head on a rock. Then a pretty gal would come along and find him and take him back to a cabin to heal up. He would have amnesia. Then her ruffian brothers would come home after not being able to find a job anywhere. There'd be a fistfight between Heath and one of the brothers but they'd end up laughing and becoming buddies. Then one of the brothers would say that they're going to rob a local ranch, the Barkley Ranch. Heath would reluctantly go along. They would get discovered sneaking around the house and in the scuffle Heath would hit his head again and regain his memory. Heath would somehow convince everyone to stop fighting. The Barkleys would offer them jobs on the ranch and the show would be over but they would never be seen or mentioned ever again.
I've Been Remiss: Thank You, D.G., for this very-pleasant, 'blast-from-the-past'! :)
10th grade study hall theme was playing as I entered at 11 am❤️
The memories 🥹 I miss my childhood😢
We had just moved from New Jersey to Upstate New York. Schools were closed for Christmas break. Dad bought our first color TV.. We only had a TV rotor antenna.
My sister and i couldn't wait till 5pm. We watched The Big Valley broadcast from Rochester then i moved the antenna and another one broadcast out of Syracuse
I prefer the original, which is grander and longer. Such a beautiful melody!
Every showing of AIrplane! on TV reminds everybody that this show did exist! And BTW, where is that barn fire? 😆
Only 4 seasons? 😢Fun while it lasted!
That is considered a good run for a Western TV show back then.
@@tracycc123 LOL, Gunsmoke and Bonanza both were on for 20 years.
Linda Evans Is Looking Glamorous On Here @ 1:33
I loved the show. Unfortunately, I never got to see the property or meet the cast
I like the 2nd one that comes on @0:56
One of the best westen series made with Linda Evans Richard lang left us far 2 ealy rest in peace 🙏 it was a bit better than bonanza ❤
Loved this show as a kid and love in now that I'm not a kid LOL Were there any lyrics to this theme?
Western genre must have been so easy to make. I mean Bonanza: Gunsmoke: The Big Valley: Rawhide: The Virginian: Wagon Train: Cheyanne: The High Chaparral: Maverick: Lancer: so many others (lol)
Those Barkley boys were so hot!
Mon and Audra beautiful as well.
Even bad guys are sometimes Super good looking.
Noticing a pattern.😂
Audra Looks Beauitiful On Here @ 0:28
Ohh man Linda Evans was a natural beauty
I read that they had planned on doing a remake but a guess they decided against it since I have not heard anything about it since.
Surprising how forgotten this show is today. I guess the title is too generic to stick with memory.
Damn, Peter Breck was cute.
I think it what what it must have been like for my family family they're owned 1.5 million Acres at one time this would have been a great tuna for that
Successful answer to Bonanza, unlike Lancer
Only Heath & Audra remain
The Big Valley didn't seem to put much effort into dressing characters in clothing of the era. I just watched an episode that had a women dressed in denim clothing. A denim jacket and women's jeans. First of all, women were not permitted to wear pants in over 95 percent of the U. S. until 1923. Secondly. the clothing this woman was wearing didn't exist until 1934. If you look at Audra Barkley's blouses, they're straight out of the 1960s.
0:16 & 0:26
Just "Heath"
YAH WHOO! YAHWEH THATS WHO! 😂
I wonder what it was like when my foundling family-owned 1.5 million Acres

Do you know how many gay men loved this show.
Because Nick was rough trade.
Pretty good show with the exception with most of the actors especially Barbara Stanwyck over acting to outdo each other.Only Linda Evans kept it cool and Lee Majors who wasn't much of an actor to begin with. Peter Breck and his hot-headed portrayal of Nick was WAY overboard.
I don't agree the show was sensational and Barbara Stanwyck was a wonderful actress and extremely beautiful!!!!!
It's a matter of opinion, but many people consider Big Valley a great western series and no 4 on the list behind Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Wagon Train!!!!!
@@scottmiller6495 wanna hear an unpopular opinion?
The rifleman.
