  • The saya nomi or scabbard chisel is intended for use in the making of Japanese swords, but it's amazingly useful in the woodworking shop as well. Blade smith Walter Sorrells demonstrates the use of this handy tool.

Hey Walter, it's been a while since I've tuned in but I'm so glad you're still turning out content. I've been watching this channel since I was probably 15 and you were one of the only reasons I had enough head knowledge to get started doing what I do now full time. Thank you so much for all your hard work and for creating such informative videos!

I was just thinking about these for a near future scabbard. Thanks.

I need one of these. Made my first forged tanto and would like to make a good scabbard.

I saw a video saying that a plane is really just a glorified chisel... (A chisel in a Jig)... This tool, seems to be the 'missing link' - half way between chisel and plane. Great vid, love (and respect) your content - thank you.

At first glance I thought this was a screwdriver that got bent by some kind of huge force.

Does the says nomi need to be rounded on the bottom? Are you going to be making a video on how to make a say nomi?

The Saya nomi does have a round belly. The round shaped edge is caused by the round belly.
The surface area of a curve is less than of a flat surface, making it easier to cut the wood; which in turn helps with precision.
Makes work a little slower, and getting a flat area takes more strokes; but that's alright because quality is more important than quantity when it comes to stuff connected to the japanese sword
