  • A video showing the process of making a bowl using a cler rose engine ornamental turning lathe.
Note: This video is actually a montage of one bowl being finished and a similar one being started. We just edited the footage so it all looks like it's one project.

I would like to see a tour of your lathe- how the various parts were constructed and operate. I notice that it is different to the norm in that the rosette pushes the cross slide, not the headstock. Unusual, but effective. Learning about the various reductions and ratios would be invaluable to someone who wants to build their own decorative lathe.

The cutter is actually 2, 1/4" triangle shaped cutters attached to opposite sides of a mechanism spinning in circular motion. I purchase the blades from MSC Industrial Supply. If you email them at metalworkingtechteam@mscdirect.com, they are very helpful.

Hello! Very interesting! =) Will wait new videos from you.
P.S. How did you get this black color, like on a big bowl with half-black, half-wooden color?

That's just the natural grain of the wood. She selects the wood she works with in order to get nice combinations of wood grain colors.

Hello from Switzerland! I also have a Cler Lathe, but am not quite to the level you are as I am figuring it out on the go. Perhaps we could connect and trade information? I do guilloché with a Rose Engine and Straight Line on watch dials and jewelry. Atelier Guilloché

I have seen Guilloche and know only to use the pointed blade, I haven't figured out how to make the pattern move so it spirals around the piece. I am an amateur at turning, learning as I go. I would enjoy trading information with someone who also has a Cler Lathe. I think mine has been modified from its origins but it works for me.
