What you need to know about RO in Aquariums. (Do you actually need it?)

- This is about why I switched from standard tap water to RO.
I do not think that RO water is for everyone but if you are in a situation like I am then it is a great option for you. It is certainly not something that is very hard to do. With an API GH KH Test kit you can make water that is safe for your fish.
I hope this will make growing plants much easier. I think my fish will be much happier as well!
I almost quit planted tanks. RO changed my life. My tap water created filamentous diatoms and I was battling algae every day until I switched.
Wow.....i appreciate the way you are taking care of your fishes
How do you keep bacteria from getting your fish? How do you get parasites from your fish? Is it inevitable?
Awesome video
VB 23 thank you very much!
i thought i was doing something wrong because my planted shrimp tank always had high nitrates but it was just ammonia in the tap water
What causes sickness. Is is something other than nitrites, nitrates, amonia.
Good advice thanks for sharing
Amazing video. I have a large 350gal tank that houses angel fish and I use.tap water. The ph is too high for them especially at night. I have co2 but I want to try using ro water. Can I begin introducing the water on water changes? What is a good percentage of water change to introduce ro water?
Travis Bedard 20% at a time would be perfect. It could potentially be a big ph swing so just watch closely. If they seem stressed next time do 10%. However, if you aren’t having any issues I wouldn’t switch to ro unless I needed to.
@@AquaticJournal the angels need lower ph. I started with 60 and have about 30 now. 🙁
Does it lower the ph too or stays the same ? My goal is to lower my TDS and get rid of nitrates from my tap
Hey Leo,
Yes addigg RO water 💦 reduces high TDS of tap water.
I'm not an expert either as just started using an RO/DI system 😀. I wonder what adjustments have you made since you made this video. And curious if you still mixing RO water with Tap water. I noticed that your using Equilibrium, would this solution give a more control result? I don't have any plants but Saechem suggest to use Replenish since I don't have plants. I am planning to get Discus fish eventually. Thanks for the video.
Since I moved houses I have stopped using RO. I plan to try it again to see if it helps with plant growth here! Anytime you use ro water you should use something to remineralize. I'd recommend equilibrium or salty shrimp. As for plants get a good all in one like easy green or tropicals fertilizer
@@AquaticJournalwhat about for cichlids. Non planted tanks
i had never measured my water PH , GH , KH before and everything works great :)
Does your RO system add minerals in the last phase like potassium, sodium and magnesium? Thanka
No I have to add it back in with salty shrimp or equalibriam.
@@AquaticJournal cool thanks for the reply. Ours re-adds them in the last phase so I'll probably switch to the RO and treat it with a little bit of Prime water conditioner versus tap water. Cheers
How do you add calcium to the tank. Because the ro system takes out the calcium
You can use a buffer like salty shrimp. Or you can add egg shells and let them disolve. Or you can even add tums with no aditives.
What RO unit are you using and how do you like this unit?
kinda looks like ro buddie
I need help. I have RO water with a mineralizer. I am wondering if you have fish that consistently get sick? I don't know whats wrong but I've had a 55 gallon for 2 years and every time I try livebearers that ultimately die. Why is that. Thy cycle is going and ph is decent, around 7. Help.
R O make your water changes a nightmare 😱 try doing this shit on a 1,000 liter or more aquarium !
Guppies are hard water fish. My tds is 350+ with a gh of 17 and a kH of 11. Its never been an issue for them. Plants otoh 😤
Are you still using RO water? Are you buffering the PH?
I have since moved and do not need ro water and I still use it occasionally. I usually use it with tap but if I use it by itself I will buffer it for gh and kh. I don't worry about the pH
When your tap water kh is higher than your gh your in trouble at the get go 👿 😢
Team tap unless your water is dangerous or you keep caridinia shrimp.
VB 23 I completely agree!
yeah my tap water is terrible, nitrites and chloramine and ammonia and probably other shit i dont even know about. Been having issues ever since i moved here. Even had fish inexplicably die overnight after a water change several times. Switching to RO. Plants wont grow in it either but I think that's more about having sand as a substrate it's probably just too dense.
Dude I’ve been killing my fish by not mineralizing!
Well hopefully this will help!
I dont understand why you would need to remineralize RO water or why TDS would even drop. It's RO not RO/DI. deionization is an extra step which removes all TDS, that's not part of an RO system. Going full RO/DI over RO is more of like a Reef Tank thing.
Ro strips everything out of the water almost. My dad works at culligan so he knows.
@@thecuprevolution8274 yeah I was mistaken
@@Keldrath Alright than.Glad we could clear the air.
@@thecuprevolution8274 Oh one thing I did learn tho, it wont strip chloramine or chlorine from the water. That kinda bit me in the ass.
@@Keldrath really? I did not know that but that seems to be true through a quick google search. I have a well so it does not have either chlorine or chloramine. But that is interesting.
I don't feel the need for ro filter water,
I'm interested on recycling dirty water instead.
If ro/di filter is that good and stripped the water clean to 0 tsd,
Then why not run dirty tank water through for clean-recyle-water? I want to run fishtank in 100% recycle water.
All water on earth is recycle water, just with different conditions.
I have to pay water, so.
This wont effect anyone, if you don't have to pay for water. I'm forced to pay for water.
💦💦💦🤑🤑🤑💦💦💦
I realy like this idea! I do not think rain water collection is legal in my location but in the future I would love to try this.
@@AquaticJournal
Oh collecting rain water or well water is great and awesome for free water usage.
It's 100% legal and free.
Just need to dig a well or used giant containers,
It's just really tough to do that in the city without land used violations.
There's 1,000 ways to recycle water for reused-
-from aquaponic -anoxic zone -chemical reactions -to extreme over filtration sumps.
I just need to find the right combination that's might work for my situation.
